Abstract Thyroid hormone is a pleiotropic factor that controls many cellular processes in multiple cell types such as cancer stem cells (CSC). Thyroid hormone concentrations in the blood are stable, but the action of the deiodinases (D2–D3) provides cell-specific regulation of thyroid hormone activity. Thyroid disorders occur at any age, but hypothyroidism is more common in older than in younger adults. In fact, the prevalence of thyroid disorders increases with age, and it is higher in old-old frail residents in nursing homes. Since thyroid diseases in older age, both overt reduced and increased function, may manifest as disorders of other organs, physicians need a high index of suspicion to detect thyroid dysfunction in an older person with multiple comorbidities and chronic polypharmacy. Treatment of chronic type B hepatitis with recombinant alpha-interferon induces autoantibodies not specific for autoimmune chronic hepatitis.

Recombinant human alpha-interferon is now under intensive investigation as therapy for chronic Type B hepatitis. Recent reports have suggested that prolonged alpha-interferon therapy may induce autoimmune reactions. We have evaluated the problem of autoimmunity related to alpha-interferon therapy by testing for 15 different antibodies in the sera of 31 patients treated with alpha-interferon. No patient had autoantibodies before treatment; 27 (87%) of 31 patients developed at least one autoantibody. Behavioural correlates of early-treated congenital hypothyroidism

Parents' and teachers' ratings were used to evaluate the behavioural characteristics of children with early-treated congenital hypothyroidism (CH). Comparisons were made between 63 children with early-treated CH and 34 healthy controls at the ages of 7.5 and 9.5 y. Additional comparisons were made between the two largest CH subgroups (thyroid agenesis, thyroid dysgenesis) and controls. The most marked differences were found on the introversion cluster and the motor clumsiness scale within it. The impact of overdiagnosis on thyroid cancer epidemic in Italy,1998-2012

Aims: In Italy, incidence rates of thyroid cancer (TC) are among the highest world- wide with substantial intracountry heterogeneity. The aim of the study was to examine time trends of TC incidence in Italy and to estimate the proportion of TC cases potentially attribut- able to overdiagnosis. Methods: Data on TC cases reported to Italian cancer registries during 1998e2012 aged <85 years were included. Age-standardised incidence rates (ASR) were computed by sex, period, and histology. We determined incidence rates, temporal trends and survival from thyroid cancer diagnosed in childhood and adolescence in Cyprus during 1998-2017.Patients aged 0-19 years, diagnosed with thyroid cancer in the Pediatric Oncology Registry of Cyprus were included. BRAF((V600E)) mutation is the most frequent genetic alteration in papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs) that are 80-90% of all thyroid cancers. We evaluated the relationship between BRAF((V600E)) and tumor, host, and environmental factors in PTCs from all geographical areas of Sicily. By PCR, BRAF((V600E)) was investigated in a series of 323 PTCs diagnosed in 2002-2005. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential for systemic administration of Methimazole (MMI) through the buccal mucosa as an alternative route for drug delivery. Considering that the most important restriction in buccal drug delivery could be the low permeability of the mucosa, the ability of MMI to cross the mucosal barrier was assessed. Permeation of MMI through porcine buccal mucosa was investigated ex vivo using Franz type diffusion cells, buffer solution simulating saliva or natural human saliva as donor phase. Thyroid hormones (THs) enhance MHC alpha gene- and repress MHC beta gene-transcription in the heart, by interacting with specific nuclear receptors (TRs), that bind to regulatory sequences localized upstream of basal promoter of myosin heavy chain (MHC) genes.
