How uncomplicated total thyroidectomy could aggravate the laryngopharyngeal reflux disease?
2016
Swallowing, voice disorders, throat discomfort and subjective neck discomfort are usually reported by patients with a known thyroid nodule and are correlated to nodular thyroid disease itself. Moreover, in endemic goitrous areas, total thyroidectomy (TT) is the most frequently performed surgical procedure. We are used to relate swallowing, voice and throat discomfort to the mechanical effects of nodular goiter or to thyroidectomy itself, but in both these cases the relationship between symptoms and the thyroid mass or its removal is not always clear or easily demonstrated. How can we explain the persistence of local neck symptoms after TT? And how can TT worsen the dysphagic or dysphonic di…
966 The Nonthyroidal Illness Syndrome in Septic Children
2012
Backgroud The interpretation of thyroid function tests in the PICU patients can be difficult because thyroid hormone concentrations are affected by nonthyroidial stresses. Most patients fall into sick euthyroid syndrome or nonthyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS). The TH therapy during critical illness remains controversial. Aim To evaluate the NTIS in septic children. Method The prospective study conducted on 65 patients admitted in PICU during 12 months period. Inclusion criteria: age > 1 month, admission for critical illness, treatment with corticosteroids, no (documented) history of thyroid pathology. The patients were divided into 2 groups: sepsis and non-sepsis group (dehydration, poisoni…
The new frontier of bone formation: a breakthrough in postmenopausal osteoporosis?
2009
Osteoporosis is a chronic disease that accelerates after menopause in many women. Most of the pharmacologic attempts to control the disease, such as hormone therapy, have emphasized the constraint of bone resorption. Since recent years have witnessed important advances in the field of bone formation, this review aims to update the present knowledge on the mechanisms affecting osteoblastogenesis and on the therapeutic results achieved by recently approved drugs. We sought peer-reviewed, full-length basic and clinical articles published between 1995 and May 2008 using a PubMed search strategy, with the terms osteoporosis and osteoblast, osteoporosis and strontium ranelate, and osteoporosis and…
PS01.057: THYROIDECTOMY AND LARYNGO-PHARYNGEAL REFLUX: WHAT’S NEW
2018
Abstract Background ‘Local neck symptoms’ may be related to goiter; a persistence of those symptoms after an uncomplicated total thyroidectomy (TT) might be referred to the laryngo-pharyngeal reflux (LPR). Our previous study found a correlation between goiter and LPR in selected patients with local neck symptoms; the purpose of our current study is to investigate the presence of a laringopharyngitis in patients with goiter, before and after TT, even in the absence of local neck symptoms, assessing whether the presence of LPR may play a role at the outset of the symptomatology. Methods Two groups of patients were considered and they differred for the presence or absence of local neck symptom…
Response of Bone Metabolism Markers to Ice Swimming in Regular Practitioners
2021
Objective: Both exercise and cold exposure cause physiological stress and they often occur in combination. However, the effects of exercise during severe cold on variation in bone metabolism in humans have remained elusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the variations in circulating bone metabolism markers after ice swimming (IS).Methods: Eighty-seven women and men aged 42–84 years old were recruited to perform regular IS activities. Serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), total calcium (Ca2+), total phosphorus (Pi), total magnesium (Mg2+), N-terminal osteocalcin (N-MID), total propeptide of procollagen 1 (TPINP), and C-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen (β-CTX) were measured 30 mi…
Graves Disease With Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone Receptor–Blocking Autoantibodies During Pregnancy
2020
Midregion parathyroid hormone-related protein inhibits growth and invasion in vitro and tumorigenesis in vivo of human breast cancer cells.
2001
Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) is critical for normal mammary development and is overexpressed by breast cancers. PTHrP is a peptide hormone that undergoes extensive post-translational processing, and PTHrP(38–94)-amide is one of the mature secretory forms of the peptide. In this study, we explored the effect of PTHrP(38–94)-amide in a panel of six breast cancer cell lines “in vitro” and in MDA-MB231 cells “in vivo” specifically examining cell viability, proliferation, invasiveness, and growth in nude mice. PTHrP(38–94)-amide markedly inhibited proliferation and also caused striking toxicity and accelerated cell death in breast cancer cells. In addition, direct injection of PTH…
Adverse effects of iodine thyroid blocking: a systematic review
2011
(131)I, when released in a radiological or nuclear accident as happened recently in Fukushima, Japan, may cause thyroid cancer as a long-term consequence. Iodine thyroid blocking (ITB) is known to reduce the risk of developing thyroid cancer. Potential adverse effects of ITB have not been systematically investigated so far. This article summarises the results of a review on adverse effects of ITB based on a systematic literature search in scientific medical databases. A meta-analysis was not performed as identified studies displayed major heterogeneity. The search resulted in 14 articles relevant to the topic, reporting mostly on surveys, ecological and intervention studies. Only one study …
Thyroid hormones induce sumoylation of the cold shock domain-containing protein PIPPin in developing rat brain and in cultured neurons.
2006
We previously identified a cold shock domain (CSD)-containing protein (PIPPin), expressed at high level in brain cells. PIPPin has the potential to undergo different post-translational modifications and might be a good candidate to regulate the synthesis of specific proteins in response to extracellular stimuli. Here we report the effects of thyroid hormone (T3) on PIPPin expression in developing rat brain. We found that a significant difference among euthyroid- and hypothyroid- newborn rats concerns sumoylation of nuclear PIPPin, that is abolished by hypothyroidism. Moreover, T3-dependence of PIPPin sumoylation has been confirmed in cortical neurons purified from brain cortices and culture…
The antiapoptotic protein BAG3 is expressed in thyroid carcinomas and modulates apoptosis mediated by tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducin…
2007
Abstract Context: We previously showed that BAG3 protein, a member of the BAG (Bcl-2-associated athanogene) co-chaperone family, modulates apoptosis in human leukemias. The expression of BAG3 in other tumor types has not been extensively investigated so far. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze BAG3 expression in thyroid neoplastic cells and investigate its influence in cell apoptotic response to TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL). Design, Setting, and Patients: We investigated BAG3 expression in human thyroid carcinoma cell lines, including NPA, and the effect of BAG3-specific small interfering RNA on TRAIL-induced apoptosis in NPA cells. Subsequently, we analyz…
