Learning Slovak in new language learning environments
2017
The aim of this dissertation is to throw light on the development of teaching and learning Slovak in the new language learning environment. New developments in teaching led to the design of an experimental e-learning course in Slovak based on the philosophy of dynamic learning and using the metaphor of climbing a mountain for learning Slovak. The course was grounded in constructivist views of learning and teaching, which emphasize the importance of learning by doing and the process-like nature of learning. The teaching experiment included reflection-on-action research, with the goal of exploring learners' beliefs about themselves as e-learners before the course, and their perceptions and ex…
Patterns of action transitions in online collaborative problem solving : A network analysis approach
2022
AbstractIn today’s digital society, computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) and collaborative problem solving (CPS) have received increasing attention. CPS studies have often emphasized outcomes such as skill levels of CPS, whereas the action transitions in the paths to solve the problems related to these outcomes have been scarcely studied. The patterns within action transitions are able to capture the mutual influence of actions conducted by pairs and demonstrate the productivity of students’ CPS. The purpose of the study presented in this paper is to examine Finnish sixth graders’ (N = 166) patterns of action transitions during CPS in a computer-based assessment environment in w…
Improving fault prevention with proactive root cause analysis (PRORCA method)
2016
Measures taken to prevent faults from slipping through to operation can secure development of highly reliable software systems. One such measure is analyzing the root causes of reoccurring faults and preventing them from ever appearing again. PRORCA method was developed in order to provide a proactive, lightweight and flexible way for fault prevention. To this end, PRORCA method relies on expert knowledge of the development context and development practices to identify individuals’ erratic behaviors that can contribute to faults slipping through to operation. The development of the method was done according to teachings of design science research. Three expert interviews with representative…

2004
Suomalaista viittomakieltä opetetaan yhä enemmän kuuleville. Tämän seurauksena on syntynyt tarve kehittää viittomakielen opetuksen metodeja sekä kouluttaa viittomakielen opettajia. Bertold Fuchsin väitöstutkimus selvitti, miten viittomakielen kielitieteellistä tutkimusta voidaan hyödyntää viittomakielen opetuksen kehitettäessä. Tutkimus keskittyi viittomakielen taidon foneettiseen osa-alueeseen, toisin sanoen käsien, pään ja kehon liikkeiden muotoon. The aim of this study is to develop the phonetic aspects of teaching Finnish Sign Language (FinSL) as a foreign language. Like pronunciation as a part of spoken language proficiency, articulation, i.e. the exact form of the movements of the par…
Preventing reverse engineering of native and managed programs
2015
One of the important aspects of protecting software from attack, theft of algorithms, or illegal software use is eliminating the possibility of performing reverse engineering. One common method used to deal with these issues is code obfuscation. However, it is proven to be ineffective. Code encryption is a much more effective means of defying reverse engineering, but it requires managing a cryptographic key available to none but the permissible users. The thesis presents a system for managing cryptographic keys in a protected environment and supporting execution of encrypted code. The system has strong security guarantees. In particular, the cryptographic keys are never stored on the target…
Impacts of Touch Screen Size, User Interface Design, and Subtask Boundaries on In-Car Task's Visual Demand and Driver Distraction
2020
Visual distraction by secondary in-car tasks is a major contributing factor in traffic incidents. In-car user interface design may mitigate these negative effects but to accomplish this, design factors’ visual distraction potential should be better understood. The effects of touch screen size, user interface design, and subtask boundaries on in-car task's visual demand and visual distraction potential were studied in two driving simulator experiments with 48 participants. Multilevel modeling was utilized to control the visual demands of driving and individual differences on in-car glance durations. The 2.5” larger touch screen slightly decreased the in-car glance durations and had a diminis…
Towards essential visual variables in user interface design
2014
This paper focuses on visual variables in user interface design from the user perspective. Visual design of user interfaces is essential to users interacting with different software. The study is conducted with 3E-templates for users to express their impressions by writing and drawing regarding visual website design. The data is analyzed with qualitative content analysis through interpretation framework. The results of this study provide new insights into user-centered visual user interface design. The results indicate which are the most essential visual variables in user interface design and therefore should be emphasized in user-centered design that promotes positive UX and, thus, benefit…
AnatomySketch : An Extensible Open-Source Software Platform for Medical Image Analysis Algorithm Development
2021
AbstractThe development of medical image analysis algorithm is a complex process including the multiple sub-steps of model training, data visualization, human–computer interaction and graphical user interface (GUI) construction. To accelerate the development process, algorithm developers need a software tool to assist with all the sub-steps so that they can focus on the core function implementation. Especially, for the development of deep learning (DL) algorithms, a software tool supporting training data annotation and GUI construction is highly desired. In this work, we constructed AnatomySketch, an extensible open-source software platform with a friendly GUI and a flexible plugin interfac…
