Intercultural competence as part of professional qualifications : a training experiment with bachelor of engineering students
2002
The globalization of working life sets new kinds of requirements on various organizations, in which intercultural competence should be understood as part of knowledge management and tacit knowledge and as a source of competitive advantage and added value. Its development should be started as early as possible. Here proactive Finnish polytechnics have a market niche. They can provide intercultural training as part of professionally-integrated foreign language education, for example. The present study was a training experiment in intercultural communication to Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) students (n = 117) at Kajaani Polytechnic, Finland. Työpaikkailmoitusten sisällön perusteella teollisuu…
Short-time non-work-related computing and creative performance
2014
It has been argued that non-work-related computing (NWRC) takes time away from work and, hence, decreases work productivity. On the other hand, it has also been claimed that short-time non-work-related computing (STNWRC) (a maximum of 15 minutes), has a positive impact on work productivity, including relief from boredom, higher creativity, and the underlying recovery mechanisms. To examine the impact of STNWRC on creative performance, we draw on Fredrickson's broaden-and-build theory, the concept of recovery with mental well-being and low cognitive effort. A 2 × 2 factorial experiment with 40 subjects was conducted. The results indicate that STNWRC has a positive effect on creative performa…
Computerized reading fluency assessment : task validity and the strongest discriminators of fluency skills among second-graders
2015
This study examines how well computerized reading fluency assessment measures correspond to the more traditional pen-and-paper methods; and which computerized measures best discriminate between children poor reading fluency skills and the control group. The study was conducted in Finland among 203 second-graders, i.e. 7-8 year olds. The children were divided into two groups: the at-risk for reading difficulties group and control group, based on their standardized score on word-level fluency test. 36 of the participants placed in the ‘at-risk’ group, and 167 in the control group. On the course of the study, the participants conducted various tasks in a computerized, interactive GraphoGame le…
Hypotheses engineering : first essential steps of experiment-driven software development
2019
Recent studies have proposed the use of experiments to guide software development in order to build features that the user really wants. Some authors argue that this approach represents a new way to develop software that is different from the traditional requirement-driven one. In this position paper, we propose the discipline of Hypotheses Engineering in comparison to Requirements Engineering, highlighting the importance of proper handling hypotheses that guide experiments. We derive a set of practices within this discipline and present how the literature has tackled them up to now. Finally, we propose a set of research questions that could guide future work towards helping practitioners. …

Optimal recovery of a radiating source with multiple frequencies along one line
2020
We study an inverse problem where an unknown radiating source is observed with collimated detectors along a single line and the medium has a known attenuation. The research is motivated by applications in SPECT and beam hardening. If measurements are carried out with frequencies ranging in an open set, we show that the source density is uniquely determined by these measurements up to averaging over levelsets of the integrated attenuation. This leads to a generalized Laplace transform. We also discuss some numerical approaches and demonstrate the results with several examples.

S-pot - A benchmark in spotting signs within continuous signing
2014
In this paper we present S-pot, a benchmark setting for evaluating the performance of automatic spotting of signs in continuous sign language videos. The benchmark includes 5539 video files of Finnish Sign Language, ground truth sign spotting results, a tool for assessing the spottings against the ground truth, and a repository for storing information on the results. In addition we will make our sign detection system and results made with it publicly available as a baseline for comparison and further developments. peerReviewed
Response to computer-assisted intervention in children most at risk for mathematics difficulties
2015
Evidence of an association between poor early number skills and a high risk for later difficulties in mathematics manifests a need for both early identification of risk and effective prevention of difficulties. However, only a few theory-based assessment and progress monitoring tools, and intervention methods are avail able for this purpose in Finnish pre-primary education. This thesis aimed to examine to what extent a theory-based computer-assisted intervention method (GraphoGame Math, GGM) can support early number skills development in children (67-year-olds) most at risk for mathematics difficulties (MD; defined as performance below the 10th percentile). The specific aims were threefold…
A Qualitative and Quantitative Study on Ancient Latin Texts Concerning the Concept of aether : Some Methodological Considerations
2022
My study focuses on the semantic analysis of an ambiguous Latin word, aether, which may roughly be translated as ‘celestial substance’. The study is carried out by utilising both qualitative and quantitative methods on a digital text corpus containing Latin literature dating from ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. In this paper, the compilation process and the contents of the corpus are described. Beside qualitative research (close reading), various computational methods are implemented on the corpus (distant reading). Of the latter, cosine similarity and correspondence analysis are discussed in this paper. I will explicate one way of combining qualitative and quantitative methods by assigning numerica…
