Ventilator-associated Pneumonia and MRSA ST398, Italy

2010

To the Editor: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sequence type (ST)398 has become increasingly common in livestock, particularly pigs, in some countries in Europe, such as Spain and Germany (1). In Italy, prevalences as high as 14% and 21.6% in pig-breeding facilities and meat-processing sites, respectively, have been recently reported (1). Possible association of MRSA in animals with infection in humans has been investigated. One study showed a strong relationship between contact with pigs or calves and carriage by persons having direct contact with animals and families of persons who handle animals (2). Moreover, an MRSA prevalence >11.9% has been described by de Boer et …

Higher Education Internationalization: The Erasmus-Mundus network added value

2014

International audience; Higher education internationalization can play a major role in developing universities and students' capacities and their opportunities broadly throughout the world. Irrespective of contextual differences within and between countries, nearly all higher education institutions worldwide are engaged in international activities and are seeking to expand them. Engaging with the world is now considered part of the definition of quality in education and research. However, with the current crisis, possible tensions and counter reactions to the development of the internationalization can occur, such as an imminent resistance to a supposed denationalizing effect of internation…

2013

Rodents are most useful models to study physiological and pathophysiological processes in early development, because they are born in a relatively immature state. However, only few techniques are available to monitor non-invasively heart frequency and respiratory rate in neonatal rodents without restraining or hindering access to the animal. Here we describe experimental procedures that allow monitoring of heart frequency by electrocardiography (ECG) and breathing rate with a piezoelectric transducer (PZT) element without hindering access to the animal. These techniques can be easily installed and are used in the present study in unrestrained awake and anesthetized neonatal C57/Bl6 mice and…

Progressive active mobilization with dose control and training load in critically ill patients (PROMOB): Protocol for a randomized controlled trial

2020

The dose of progressive active mobilization is still uncertain. The purpose of this study is to identify if the addition of a protocol of progressive active mobilization with dose and training load control to usual care is effective in reducing the length of stay in intensive care unit (ICU) and the improvement of the functioning, incidence of ICU-acquired weakness (ICUAW), mechanical ventilation duration and mortality rate in patients hospitalized in ICU. It is Double-blind randomised clinical trial. The setting for this trial will be medical and surgical ICU of a university hospital. The study participants will be 118 patients aged> 18 years admitted to ICU for less than 72 hours. Partici…

EVALUATION OF THE COMBINED EFFECT OF VEGETATION AND NATURAL VENTILATION IN NEARLY ZERO ENERGY MULTI-STOREY BUILDINGS – nZE(ms)B

2020

Cooling load is the main cause of high energy consumption for tall buildings in tropical climates while the construction of tall buildings is an unavoidable practice due to land scarcity in metropolitan cities. In this regard, the use of natural ventilation (NV) in tall buildings can help reducing the energy consumption. However, this solution can also bring the problem of polluted air that may enter the space to be ventilated. If the air is passed through a system that can absorb pollutants and add more oxygen to the air, the problem may almost be solved. Building integrated vegetation (BIV) systems can help solving this problem. So, if the air entering buildings passes through dense veget…

Radiofrequency volumetric tissue reduction (RFVTR) of inferior turbinates: a new method in the treatment of chronic nasal obstruction.

2001

Twenty-two Caucasians (16 male and 6 female) with chronic bilateral nasal obstruction due to hypertrophic inferior turbinates were followed up over a three-month period. They were assessed by clinical examination, as active anterior rhinometry, and acoustic rhinometry before and after topical decongestion, preoperatively and three months after surgery. All patients were treated by application of radiofrequency-volumetric-tissue reduction (RFVTR, or somnoplasty) to both inferior turbinates. Initial postoperative edematous response disappeared during the first week after RFVTR. Three months postoperatively 20 of 22 patients (91%) reported subjective improvement of nasal patency. The average …

Nurses' experiences by using heated humidified high flow cannula to premature infants versus nasal continuous positive airway pressure

2016

Abstract Background Some premature infants are now being treated with heated humidified high flow nasal cannula (HHHFNC) instead of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP). Purpose To explore nurses' experiences of using HHHFNC compared with nCPAP for premature infants. Method Six qualitative in-depth interviews were completed with nurses at two different newborn intensive care units. Results Preterm infants showed greater satisfaction with HHHFNC than nasal continuous positive airway pressure. HHHFNC was also associated with fewer pressure injuries and less facial discomfort, and an increased bonding between baby and parent. However, HHHFNC gave less ventilation support than nCPA…

Correction to: When kidneys and lungs suffer together

2019

A significant interaction between kidneys and lungs has been shown in physiological and pathological conditions. The two organs can both be targets of the same systemic disease (eg., some vasculitides). Moreover, loss of normal function of either of them can induce direct and indirect dysregulation of the other one. Subjects suffering from COPD may have systemic inflammation, hypoxemia, endothelial dysfunction, increased sympathetic activation and increased aortic stiffness. As well as the exposure to nicotine, all the foresaid factors can induce a microvascular damage, albuminuria, and a worsening of renal function. Renal failure in COPD can be unrecognized since elderly and frail patients…
