Sputum metalloproteinase-9/tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 ratio correlates with airflow obstruction in asthma and chronic bronchitis

Asthma and chronic bronchitis are inflammatory diseases with extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling and collagen deposition. Collagen homeostasis is controlled by metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). We evaluated MMP and TIMP balance in induced sputum of 10 control, 31 untreated asthmatic, and 16 chronic bronchitic subjects. We first performed zymographic analysis to identify the profile of MMPs. Zymography revealed a similar MMPs profile in all populations studied and that MMP-9 was the major enzyme released. Autonomic regulation of nasal vessels during changes in body position

The effects of postural changes on nasal airflow and nasal capillary blood flow were investigated in 15 healthy volunteers. Measurements were performed following nasal application of saline solution (control), the alpha-1 receptor antagonist prazosin, the alpha-2 receptor antagonist yohimbine, and after application of both prazosin and yohimbine. Nasal airflow in the control experiments did not significantly differ in the upright (362 +/- 166 ml/s), dorsally recumbent (350 +/- 167 ml/s) and 70 degrees head down position (311 +/- 167 ml/s). The aim of this study was to examine whether the increase in the energy cost of running (C(r)), previously reported to occur at the end of a prolonged run, could be influenced by the ingestion of either an artificially sweetened placebo (Pl) or a 5.5% carbohydrate (CHO) solution. Kyphoscoliosis ventilatory insufficiency: noninvasive management outcomes.

Objective: To determine the effects on symptoms, pulmonary function, sleep, and other clinical variables of treating kyphoscoliosis-associated chronic alveolar hypoventilation with nocturnal nasal ventilation. Design: Sixteen patients with kyphoscoliosis were treated with nocturnal nasal ventilation delivered by volume-cycled (seven patients) and pressure-cycled (nine patients) ventilators. Accuracy of delivered versus preset minute ventilation of portable emergency ventilators.

The accuracy of delivered minute volume (VE) ventilation of portable emergency ventilators (PEV) was evaluated. Five PEV from three manufacturers were adapted to an artificial lung for varying compliance and resistance. Each PEV was tested in the "no airmix" (pure oxygen) and "airmix" (approximately 60% oxygen) setting at different frequencies and VE.
