Data from: Evaluating the potential for evolutionary mismatch in Batesian mimics: a case study in the endangered Smooth Snake (Coronella austriaca).
2018
Many harmless organisms gain a survival advantage by mimicking venomous species. This is the case of the endangered smooth snake (Coronella austriaca), which mimics venomous vipers. Although this may protect the smooth snake against most of its natural predators, it may render them at greater risk of mortality from humans, who are more inclined to kill species, such as vipers, that they consider dangerous. This may cause an evolutionary mismatch, whereby humans may counteract the natural advantage of mimicry. We explore this possibility evaluating the willingness of humans to kill smooth snakes versus the adder (Vipera berus), as well as their ability to discern them in the Åland Islands. O…
Treatment of multilesion coronary artery disease with simultaneous drug-eluting and bare-metal stent implantation: Clinical follow up and angiographi…
2009
OBJECTIVES: We sought to evaluate clinical and angiographic outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients receiving both bare-metal stents (BMS) and drug-eluting stents (DES). BACKGROUND: Few data are available about the safety and efficacy of the practice namely called "hybrid PCI". METHODS: One hundred and eighty-six patients, 502 de novo lesions, received during PCI both BMS (n ≤ 266) and DES (316), with a mean of 3.1 ± 1.2 stents/patient. Cumulative major adverse cardiac events were analyzed at 24 ± 22 months. RESULTS: Clinical follow up was carried out in 100 of eligible patients. Angiographic follow up at 8.6 ± 4.4 months was achieved in 70.4 of patients, 71.6 of st…

¿TIENEN LOS NIÑOS PENSAMIENTOS INTRUSOS ANÁLOGOS A OBSESIONES? PRESENTACiÓN DE UN INSTRUMENTO ESTANDARIZADO Y RESULTADOS PRELIMINARES
2007

Impact of Different Washing Conditions on the Release of Ag Species from Textiles
2016
The paper investigates the Ag release from textiles (socks available in shops, cotton and viscose filled with Ag nanoparticles–AgNPs) into a washing solution under different conditions. The released Ag amount depended on various factors, such as test media (chemical composition, temperature and water volume), metal contents, and textile impregnation conditions. Furthermore, it turned out that the textile type and colour were the main parameters affecting the Ag release. The Ag concentration in the washing solution ranged between 0.015 μg/l and 4.44 μg/l (socks) and between 0.61 μg/l and 103 μg/l (AgNPs–filled cotton). The total Ag percentage released into water during one washing varied con…
Control of the Development of Swirling Airflow Dynamics and Its Impact on Biomass Combustion Characteristics
2017
Abstract The development of the swirling flame flow field and gasification/ combustion dynamics at thermo-chemical conversion of biomass pellets has experimentally been studied using a pilot device, which combines a biomass gasifier and combustor by varying the inlet conditions of the fuel-air mixture into the combustor. Experimental modelling of the formation of the cold nonreacting swirling airflow field above the inlet nozzle of the combustor and the upstream flow formation below the inlet nozzle has been carried out to assess the influence of the inlet nozzle diameter, as well primary and secondary air supply rates on the upstream flow formation and air swirl intensity, which is highly …
Thermo-Mechanical Behaviour of Flax-Fibre Reinforced Epoxy Laminates for Industrial Applications
2015
The present work describes the experimental mechanical characterisation of a natural flax fibre reinforced epoxy polymer composite. A commercial plain woven quasi-unidirectional flax fabric with spun-twisted yarns is employed in particular, as well as unidirectional composite panels manufactured with three techniques: hand-lay-up, vacuum bagging and resin infusion. The stiffness and strength behaviours are investigated under both monotonic and low-cycle fatigue loadings. The analysed material has, in particular, shown a typical bilinear behaviour under pure traction, with a knee yield point occurring at a rather low stress value, after which the material tensile stiffness is significantly r…
