From historical legacy to self-determined language(s) policy? Literary multilingualism in Lithuania and Latvia
2021
From Historical Legacy to Self-Determined Language(s) Policy? Literary Multilingualism in Lithuania and Latvia. The first part of this article looks at Soviet language(s) policy. Two further parts discuss language(s) policy and literary multilingualism in Lithuania and Latvia. The aim is not to provide a differentiated investigation, but to show similarities and differences as well as tendencies in the language(s) politics of the two states from the 19th century to the present in the mirror of literature and to explain them using case studies. In the fourth, concluding part, literary translation is highlighted as one of the formats for implementing multilingualism outside the text with part…
The early childhood education and care partnership for bilingualism in minority language schooling : collaboration between bilingual families and ped…
2016
Educational partnerships occur at the intersection of early childhood education and care (ECEC), families, and the surrounding community, and have been shown to play a significant role in student success rates in education. There is, however, a gap in research on the role and potential of ‘partnership’ in the case of bilingual families with children enrolled in monolingual minority language ECEC. This study aimed to fill this void by examining parental and practitioner discourses on partnership and on obligations, desires, abilities, and competencies involved in acting on a bilingual childhood in the context of monolingual minority ECEC. Parents in nine Finnish–Swedish bilingual families an…
Interactive Gradually Generating Relevance Query Refinement Under the Human-Mediated Scenario in Multilingual Settings
2016
As opposed to query modelling, relevance generating interactive query refinement (QR) is a technique aimed at exploiting syntax variations of gradually extended, being removed or replaced with some other keywords query, which depending on the factors like e.g. the information resource, the database structure, or the keyword alignment, facilitates significantly the searching process. Therefore our motivation is to explore the dynamism of the precision trend depended upon the factors analyzed. For a couple of language pairs which constitute multilingual settings, we develop a user-centred framework that imposes distributed search optimization. Our data set contains variety of query types subm…

UNA DIDATTICA IMMERSIVA PER MIGRANTI E PER TUTTI
2022
2020
Palermo 2000–2020: Sicilian in Old and New Migrations
2022
This article will focus on the comparison between language attitudes and the status and functions of local dialect into migrant communities over the last twenty years. The first research started in the first years on the third Millennium and is being conducted (using narrative interview) within hundred young and adult migrants born in Palermo or residents in the city for years. In D’Agostino ( 2004, 2006, 2010), I suggested that very often the dialect was seen by migrants as a bridge thrown by the host society to favour their insertion, like “we code” shared by foreigners and natives who live in the same spaces within the city. It is been several years that the older migration has integrate…
Towards a multilingual database of sound effects
One of the most significant linguistic and technical challenges applied to subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing persons (SDH) is the linguistic description of sound encapsulated within the space of subtitles. This subtitle typology is crucial to hearing impaired audiences, since its main purpose is to improve the level of comprehension and appreciation of the plot, character development and, in general, of the nuances of audiovisual products. The scope of this study is to investigate the possibilities and the applications of a multilingual database of sound effects. Such database will combine the most recent technologies in Respeaking, viewed as “the production of subtitles by means …
Guest-dependent single-ion magnet behaviour in a cobalt(ii) metal-organic framework.
2015
Single-ion magnets (SIMs) are the smallest possible magnetic devices for potential applications in quantum computing and high-density information storage. Both, their addressing in surfaces and their organization in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are thus current challenges in molecular chemistry. Here we report a two-dimensional 2D MOF with a square grid topology built from cobalt(ii) SIMs as nodes and long rod-like aromatic bipyridine ligands as linkers, and exhibiting large square channels capable to host a large number of different guest molecules. The organization of the cobalt(ii) nodes in the square layers improves the magnetic properties by minimizing the intermolecular interaction…
