Finding atrial fibrillation in stroke patients: Randomized evaluation of enhanced and prolonged Holter monitoring—Find-AFRANDOMISED —rationale and de…
2014
Background Detecting paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with ischemic strokes presenting in sinus rhythm is challenging because episodes are often short, occur randomly, and are frequently asymptomatic. If AF is detected, recurrent thromboembolism can be prevented efficiently by oral anticoagulation. Numerous uncontrolled studies using various electrocardiogram (ECG) devices have established that prolonged ECG monitoring increases the yield of AF detection, but most established procedures are time-consuming and costly. The few randomized trials are mostly limited to cryptogenic strokes. The optimal method, duration, and patient selection remain unclear. Repeated prolonged conti…
Differences in blood pressure control and stroke mortality across Spain: the Prevención de Riesgo de Ictus (PREV-ICTUS) study.
2007
The objective was to assess the stroke risk and prevalence of the cardiovascular risk factors and to analyze their relationship with the specific stroke rates of mortality in each of the autonomic communities of Spain. We conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional study of population >60 years old in Spanish primary care centers. In all of the subjects, clinical, biochemical, and electrocardiographic data were obtained, and the 10-year stroke risk was calculated using the Framingham score. Mortality rates of stroke, age and sex adjusted, were obtained for each of the autonomic communities from the Ministry of Health. A total of 7343 subjects (mean age: 71.6 years, 53.4% women, 34.4% obese…
Relationship between HRV measurements and demographic and clinical variables in a population of patients with atrial fibrillation.
2015
Little is known about the role of HRV in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. Aim of our study was to assess the relationship between HRV measurements and demographic and clinical variables in a population of 274 AF patients. We selected all consecutive patients with persistent/permanent AF among whom had performed a Holter ECG in our Department from April 2010 to April 2015. Time-domain analysis of HRV was evaluated. Demographic and clinical variables were collected for each patient. At multivariable logistic regression, a higher pNN50 was associated with ACE inhibitors/ARBs (p = 0.016) and a lower pNN50 with obesity (p = 0.037) and higher heart rate (HR) (p < 0.0005). A higher RMSSD w…
Trends in the incidence and management of biliary tract cancer: a French population-based study.
2011
The trends in incidence and management of biliary tract cancer (BTC) were investigated in a well-defined French population over a 30-year period (1976-2005).Data were obtained from the Burgundy digestive cancer registry. Age-standardised incidence rates and trends in incidence were determined. Treatment and stage at diagnosis were also investigated. Five-year survival rates were calculated.Six hundred and fifteen cases of BTC were recorded. There was no significant change in BTC incidence over the 30-year period. For extrahepatic BTC age-standardised incidence rates were 1.1/100,000 for 1976-80 and 2001-2005. These rates were respectively 0.3 and 0.2/100,000 for intrahepatic BTC. The propor…
A randomized, double-blind comparison of antiepileptic drug treatment in the elderly with new-onset focal epilepsy.
2015
Objective: To compare the effectiveness of controlled-released carbamazepine (CR-CBZ) to levetiracetam (LEV) and to lamotrigine (LTG) in elderly patients with newlydiagnosedfocalepilepsy. Methods: Randomized, double-blind, parallel-group trial conducted between January2007andAugust2011,in47ambulatoryorhospitalsitesinGermany,Austria,orSwit-zerland. Eligible participants were aged ≥60, had new-onset epilepsy, had no acute ill-nessasthecauseoftheirseizures,andhadnocontraindicationtothedrugsinthetrial.Patients were randomized 1:1:1 to CR-CBZ, LTG, or LEV. Doses were up-titrated for6 weeks and could be maintained or adjusted depending on seizure relapse or tolera-bility over an additional period …
Papaverine decreases the efflux of42K in guinea-pig atrial heart muscle
1980
The effects of papaverine on resting potential and efflux of42K were investigated in guinea-pig left atria. Papaverine significantly reduced the potassium efflux in beating preparations. In resting preparations, the efflux of potassium was only slightly affected. However, the resting potential was significantly reduced by papaverine by about 5 mV.
Comparative changes between pancreas and pancreatic juice digestive enzyme contents during nutritional rehabilitation following severe protein malnut…
1993
The relationship between digestive enzyme activities in the pancreas and pancreatic juice was studied in post-weaning rats fed on a low-protein diet (30 g cereal protein/kg) for 1 month and a refeeding balanced diet (235 g mixed protein/kg) for the following 3 months. A control group was fed on the balanced diet for 4 months. At the end of malnutrition and at various times of refeeding, activities of amylase (EC3.2.1.1), trypsin(EC3.4.21.4), chymotrypsin (EC3.4.21.1), lipase (EC3.1.1.3), phospholipase A2 (EC3.1.1.4) and cholesterolesterase (EC3.1.1.13) in pancreas and pancreatic juice were measured. Recovery of body and pancreas weights was obtained after 3 months of refeeding. Pancreas off…
Quality of life and functional limitations after pulmonary embolism and its prognostic relevance
2019
Abstract Background While the importance of patients’ quality of life (QoL) in chronic cardiac or pulmonary disease is uncontroversial, the burden of an acute pulmonary embolism (PE) on QoL has received little attention thus far. Objectives We aimed to validate the German PEmb‐QoL questionnaire, identify associations between QoL and clinical/functional parameters, and investigate the prognostic relevance of QoL for long‐term survival in survivors of an acute PE episode. Patients/Methods Patients were invited for a clinical follow‐up visit including assessment of QoL using the German PEmb‐QoL questionnaire 6 months after an objectively confirmed PE at a single center. Internal consistency re…
Severe scleral dellen as an early complication of pterygium excision with simple conjunctival closure and review of the literature
2014
Impact of Accessory Renal Artery Coverage on Renal Function during Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair.
2021
Background Long-term outcomes of accessory renal artery (ARA) coverage after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) are unknown. We analyzed the impact of ARA coverage on renal function long-term. Methods This retrospective, monocentric study included patients treated by EVAR between 2008 and 2016. Patients with at least one ARA covered with EVAR (ARA group) were compared with patients with no covered ARA (control group). Renal function was determined by estimating the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and graded according to chronic kidney disease (CKD) classification stages. Results A total of 184 patients were included (ARA group, n = 25; control group, n = 159). Renal risk factors were sim…
