MGUS and multiple myeloma: looking for “new” markers and exploring the interaction with the bone marrow microenvironment.
Location-Free Spectrum Cartography
2019
Spectrum cartography constructs maps of metrics such as channel gain or received signal power across a geographic area of interest using spatially distributed sensor measurements. Applications of these maps include network planning, interference coordination, power control, localization, and cognitive radios to name a few. Since existing spectrum cartography techniques require accurate estimates of the sensor locations, their performance is drastically impaired by multipath affecting the positioning pilot signals, as occurs in indoor or dense urban scenarios. To overcome such a limitation, this paper introduces a novel paradigm for spectrum cartography, where estimation of spectral maps rel…
Nonparametric statistics for DOA estimation in the presence of multipath
2002
This paper is concerned with array signal processing in nonGaussian noise and in the presence of multipath. Robust and fully nonparametric high resolution algorithms for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation are presented. The algorithms are based on multivariate spatial sign and rank concepts. Spatial smoothing of the multivariate rank and sign based covariance matrices is employed as a preprocessing step in order to deal with coherent sources. The performance of the algorithms is studied using simulations. The results show that almost optimal performance is obtained in wide variety of different noise conditions.

2015
The management of the slow transit constipation in the laparoscopic era
2018
The slow transit constipation (STC) is a functional bowel pathology with slow total gut transit time with normal calibre colon in addition to a variety of other systemic symptoms. Patients with an abnormal colonic motility refractory to conservative treatment are regarded as appropriate candidates for surgery. Laparoscopic total colectomy with ileum-rectum anastomosis represents the commonest surgical operation in the treatment of STC, in well selected patients, after failure of conservative treatment. From 2012 to 2016, 8 patients suffering constipation according to Roma III criteria and diagnosed as STC were submitted to a total colectomy in our O.U. We evaluated the long-term post-operat…
On the Consistency of Non-Stationary Multipath Fading Channels with Respect to the Average Doppler Shift and the Doppler Spread
2017
This paper is concerned with the consistency of non-stationary multipath fading channels. We introduce conditions under which a channel model is consistent w.r.t. the average Doppler shift and the Doppler spread. The conditions are applied to two classes of non-stationary channel models. The first class, which is termed Class A, is characterized by channel models based on an integral relationship between the path phases and the associated time-variant Doppler frequencies. The second class of models, called the Class B models, emerges from standard sum-of-cisoids (SOC) models by replacing the time-independent Doppler frequencies by time-dependent Doppler frequencies. It is shown that the Cla…
On the statistical properties of the capacity of sparse multipath fading channels
2014
Most existing works in wireless communications assume rich scattering. However, there is growing experimental evidence that physical wireless channels can exhibit a sparse structure. By assuming an asymmetric Doppler power spectral density (PSD), we can model and simulate sparse channels by using a finite sum of weighted complex harmonic functions, also called sum of cisoids (SOC). In this paper, we focus on the analysis of the statistical properties of the instantaneous capacity of sparse SOC-based multipath fading channels under line-of-sight (LOS) conditions. The probability density function (PDF), the cumulative distribution function (CDF), the level-crossing rate (LCR), and the average…
Sparse multipath channels: Modelling, analysis, and simulation
2013
A sparse multipath channel is characterized by a small number of randomly distributed scatterers. This study proposes a methodology for the modelling of sparse multipath channels. The new methodology is then used to develop a sparse narrowband multipath channel model by applying the sum-of-cisoids (SOC) principle. The statistical properties of the presented sparse SOC multipath channel model are studied. Analytical expressions are derived for the mean value, variance, autocorrelation function (ACF) and cross-correlation function (CCF) of the complex channel gain, as well as for the probability density function (PDF) of the envelope. Our study shows that mobile radio channels behave in spars…
3′-Demethyldihydromaldoxin and dihydromaldoxin, two anti-inflammtory diaryl ethers from a Steganospora species
2012
CXCL10 (IP-10) is a highly inducible chemoattractant, which contributes to the recruitment of inflammatory cells such as macrophages and T-lymphocytes and thereby has important roles in chronic inflammatory conditions. In a search for new inhibitors of CXCL10 expression in MonoMac6 (MM6) cells, the new diaryl ether 3'-demethyldihydromaldoxin (1) along with the known compound dihydromaldoxin (2), were isolated from fermentations of a Steganospora species. The structures of the compounds were elucidated by a combination of one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Compounds (1) and (2) inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-induced CXCL10 promoter activ…
Pyrocoll, an Antibiotic, Antiparasitic and Antitumor Compound Produced by a Novel Alkaliphilic Streptomyces Strain
2003
A new secondary metabolite was detected in the culture extract of Streptomyces sp. AK 409 by HPLC-diode-array screening. The metabolite was identified as pyrocoll, which is known to be a constituent of cigarette smoke. Pyrocoll is known as a synthetic compound, but until now had not been isolated as a natural product from a microorganism. The compound showed biological activity against various Arthrobacter strains, filamentous fungi, several pathogenic protozoa, and some human tumor cell lines.
