P02.25 LOCAL NECK SYMPTOMS BEFORE AND AFTER THYROIDECTOMY: A POSSIBLE CORRELATION WITH GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX AND REFLUX LARYNGOPHARYNGITIS. Abnormal thyroid hormones and non-thyroidal illness syndrome in obstructive sleep apnea, and effects of CPAP treatment
2016
Objective In obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), while both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism have been studied, the occurrence of non-thyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS) (normal thyroid stimulating hormone [TSH] with low triiodotironine) has not been investigated. We explored the occurrence of NTIS in patients with moderate to severe OSA and its relationship to the severity of nocturnal respiratory disorders. We also studied the occurrence of subclinical hypothyroidism (SH, ie, high TSH with normal thyroxine) in OSA and changes in circulating TSH, free triiodotironine (fT3) and free thyroxine (fT4) after CPAP treatment. Methods After a nocturnal respiratory polysomnography, 125 consecutive patie…
Contractile responses of human thyroid arteries to vasopressin
2013
Aims: In the present study we investigated the intervention of nitric oxide and prostacyclin in the responses to vasopressin of isolated thyroid arteries obtained from multi-organ donors. Main methods: Paired artery rings from glandular branches of the superior thyroid artery, one normal and the other deendothelised, were mounted in organ baths for isometric recording of tension. Concentration-response curves to vasopressin were determined in the absence and in the presence of either the vasopressin V1 receptor antagonist d(CH2)5Tyr(Me)AVP (10−8 M), the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor NG-monomethyl-Larginine (L-NMMA, 10−4 M), or the inhibitor of prostaglandins indomethacin (10−6 M). Key fin…
Thyroid hormones and the central nervous system of mammals (Review)
2008
Abstract. The thyroid hormones (THs) L-thyroxine (T4) and L-triiodothyronine (T3) have a profound influence on the development and maturation of the mammalian brain, both before and after birth. Any impairment in the supply of THs to the developing nervous system leads to severe and irreversible changes in both the overall architecture and functions of the brain and causes, in humans, neurological and motor deficits known as cretinism. Pronounced neurological symptoms are also commonly observed in adult patients suffering from both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, and it has recently emerged that certain symptoms might result from the reduced brain uptake, rather than the insufficient pr…
