a b s t r a c t In this work a careful investigation on the degradation of an organically modified montmorillonite sample (Cloisite 15A) thermal treated under different atmospheres, namely nitrogen, air and oxygen enriched atmosphere was performed. The exposure time of the thermal treatment ranged between 5 and 300 min. Polymerization of an acrylate derivative of bisphenol-A by ionizing radiation in the presence of an organically modified montmorillonite was carried out in order to produce a flame-retardant composite. The measurement of the thermal effect during irradiation indicates that radiation curing of pure resin and resin-clay mixtures occurred in both cases. Moreover, differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis showed that a curing completion can be obtained by thermal curing after irradiation with a significant increase of the glass transition temperature. Dissolved silica in the Garonne River waters : changes in the weathering dynamics

The major ion chemistry of the Garonne River is indicative of seasonal variations in the weathering dynamics of the drainage basin. Using the geochemical model MEGA for calculation of the contribution of atmospheric CO2 to the total bicarbonate fluxes exported by the Garonne River allows estimations of the concentrations of the major dissolved elements that originate from silicate- and carbonate-rock weathering. The molecular ratio SiO2/Al2O3 was calculated for the 1989–1992 period to identify the main type of weathering in the Garonne River, and montmorillonite was shown to be the major mineral occurring in the weathering products. Uranyl sorption onto birnessite: A surface complexation modeling and EXAFS study

This work investigates the mechanism of the uranyl interaction with birnessite, one of the most common layer-type MnO2 mineral at the Earth's surface, by coupling macroscopic (surface complexation experiments) and microscopic (EXAFS measurements) approaches. The sorption of uranyl on synthetic hexagonal birnessite, the low-pH birnessite form, was studied under various conditions of pH (3–6), electrolyte backgrounds (0.1 M NaClO4, NaNO3 and Na2CO3), and solid/liquid ratios (from 0.27 to 4.5 g/L). Sorption isotherms exhibit a complex form indicative of at least two types of sorption sites. Electrical treeing in EVA-bohemite and EVA-montmorillonite nanocomposites

The present experimental work focuses on the growth of electrical treeing inside different Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) nanocomposites containing Bohemite (an aluminum oxide hydroxide) and Montmorillonite (a phyllosilicate clay mineral) nanoparticles. Bohemite and Montmorillonite particles have different aspect ratios: the first one has a nanometric cube-like symmetry, while the latter has a typical layered structure. The results evidence that the growth of the electrical treeing inside the original polymer can be altered significantly by the dispersion of inorganic nanoparticles.

Effect of extrusion and photoxidation on polyethylene/clay nanocomposites

Polyethylene (a 1:1 blend of m-LLDPE and z-LLDPE) double layer silicate clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt extrusion using a twin screw extruder. Maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PEgMA) was used as a compatibiliser to enhance the dispersion of two organically modified monmorilonite clays (OMMT): Closite 15A (CL15) and nanofill SE 3000 (NF), and natural montmorillonite (NaMMT). Structural studies of adsorbed protein (betalactoglobulin) on natural clay (montmorillonite)

International audience; In this work, the adsorption of a small globular protein (betalactoglobulin, BLG), on a natural montmorillonite clay (Mt) was investigated in acidic buffer (pH = 3). The combination of different characterization techniques such as zetametry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electronic microscopy, fluorescence and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies shed light on the interaction mechanism between the clay mineral and the proteins.
