Insights on a Giant Aneurysm Treated Endovascularly

2015

Background  Endovascular treatment with stent-assisted Guglielmi detachable coils is an accepted method for treating intracranial giant aneurysms that otherwise would require more invasive or destructive treatment or could not be treated at all. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of information concerning inner postcoiling aneurysmal changes in human subjects over the long term. We report a postmortem analysis of a patient with a giant aneurysm at the vertebrobasilar junction (VBJ) who was treated endovascularly and studied pathologically 24 months after treatment. Materials and Method  The head was removed at autopsy and prefixed in a 10% neutral buffered formalin solution. The brain was gen…

Porous clays heterostructures as supports of iron oxide for environmental catalysis

2018

[EN] Porous Clays Heterostructures (PCH) from natural pillared clays (bentonite with a high proportion of montmorillonite) have been used as supports of iron oxide for two reactions of environmental interest: i) the elimination of toluene (a representative compound of one of the most toxic subsets of volatile organic compounds, aromatics) by total oxidation and ii) the selective oxidation of H2S to elemental sulfur. For both reactions these catalysts have resulted to be remarkably more efficient than similar catalysts prepared using conventional silica as a support. Thus, in the total oxidation of toluene it has been observed that the catalytic activity obtained using siliceous PCH is two o…

Covalently modified nanoclays: synthesis, properties and applications

2020

Abstract Clay minerals are phyllosilicates of nanoscale dimensions. According to their ability to entrap and release organic moieties, they have found applications in several fields, such as drug carrier and delivery, support for catalyst, environmental remediation and filler for polymeric matrices. The possibility to modify, by covalent linkage, their surfaces gives the possibility to form new nanomaterials with improved properties respect to the pristine clay minerals. In this chapter, the modifications of the siloxane surfaces of the most representative clay minerals, namely montmorillonite, sepiolites, laponite and halloysite were reviewed and discussed.

Novel organo-modifier for thermally-stable polymer-layered silicate nanocomposites

2015

A new novel approach for the stabilisation of polymer-clay nanocomposites has been investigated based on reacting chemically an antioxidant function, a hindered phenol moiety, with an organic modifier based on a quaternary ammonium salt. The chemically linked antioxidant-containing organic modifier (AO-OM) was then introduced into natural montmorillonite (MMt) through a cation-exchange reaction resulting in antioxidant-containing organo-modified clay (AO-OM-MMt). The new antioxidant-containing modified clay, along with other organo-modified clays having a similar organo-modifier but without the reacted antioxidant, were characterised by spectroscopic, thermogravimetric and x-ray diffraction…

Friedel-Crafts catalytic alkylations using rare earth-based mineral supports

1998

Abstract Rare earth halides supported on mineral supports (K10 montmorillonite and silica) were investigated as catalysts for Friedel-Crafts alkylations. This project concerns the replacement of the widely used Lewis acid AlCl3 in Friedel-Crafts reactions by environmentally friendly catalysts in that they circumvent the production of aluminum waste. The catalytic activity of these heterogeneous catalysts was established in a series of alkylations of aromatic compounds.

Role of virtopsy in the post-mortem diagnosis of drowning.

2014

Purpose: Due to admitted limits of autopsy-based studies in the diagnosis of drowning, virtopsy is considered the new imaging horizon in these post-mortem studies. The aim of our study was to evaluate the role of virtopsy performed through computed tomography (CT) in the forensic diagnosis of drowning. Materials and methods: We retrospectively examined the CT data of four cadavers recovered from sea water and suspected to have died by drowning. Each patient underwent a full-body post-mortem CT scan, and then a traditional autopsy. Conclusion: To date, there are no autopsy findings pathognomonic of drowning. This study proves that virtopsy is a useful tool in the diagnosis of drowning in tha…

An Insight into the Role of Postmortem Immunohistochemistry in the Comprehension of the Inflammatory Pathophysiology of COVID-19 Disease and Vaccine-…

2021

On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a pandemic due to the spread of COVID-19 from Wuhan, China, causing high mortality rates all over the world. The related disease, which mainly affects the lungs, is responsible for the onset of Diffuse Alveolar Damage (DAD) and a hypercoagulability state, frequently leading to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and multiorgan failure, particularly in old and severe-critically ill patients. In order to find effective therapeutic strategies, many efforts have been made aiming to shed light on the pathophysiology of COVID-19 disease. Moreover, following the late advent of vaccination campaigns, the need for the comprehension …

Postmortem Imaging in Drowning

2019

The diagnosis of drowning is one of the most difficult in the field of forensic medicine since the autopsy findings are often not specific and the laboratory examinations are controversially appreciated by the scientific community. In a cadaver recovered from water, it is of utmost importance to differentiate antemortem and postmortem drowning. This chapter fully investigates biological/thanato-chemical, pathological and imaging findings which may guide the definitive diagnosis.
