Solvent-mediated phase transformation between two tegafur polymorphs in several solvents
2014
This paper describes a study of the solvent-mediated polymorphic transformation (SMPT) of the metastable α tegafur to the thermodynamically stable β tegafur in several solvents. Phase transformation in acetone, ethanol, i-propanol, toluene, and water at 22 °C was described using the solid-state kinetic model P2; the rate constants for this process were in the range from 0.028 min−1 to 0.0056 min−1. In all of the employed solvents, an induction time was observed. Kinetic, solubility and scanning electron microscopy data indicated that nucleation kinetics corresponded to a second-order power function and according to the kinetic model, the nuclei growth rate was constant in the examined SMPT.…
A Chemical Index Inspired by Biological Plastic Evolution: Valence-Isoelectronic Series of Aromatics
2004
Plastic evolution is a new perspective of the evolutionary process conjugating the effect, on one hand, of the acquired characters and, on the other, of the relationships that emerge among the principle of evolutionary indeterminacy, the principle of morphologic determination, and natural selection. Plastic evolution is applied to design the coordination index Ic. Ic is used to characterize the valence-isoelectronic series of cyclopentadiene, benzene, toluene, and styrene and compared to charge indices for dipole moment. The parameters needed to calculate Ic are minus the standard enthalpy of formation T, molecular surface area S, and molecular weight W. With the exception of the O heteromo…
Efficiency of the microwave-assisted extraction of hydrocarbons and pesticides from sediments
1997
Abstract A mixture of toluene and water is proposed for the microwave-assisted extraction of organic pollutants, hydrocarbons and pesticides, from marine sediments. The effect of experimental conditions, such as microwave power and irradiation time, on the extraction of linear, unresolved and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as well as PCBs and DDTs has been evaluated using real marine sediment samples. Values found by Soxhlet and ultrasonic extraction were employed to evaluate the efficiency of the microwave-assisted extraction. Analytical determinations were carried out by gas chromatography using FID, ECD and MS detectors. For 2 g of a dry sediment, an extraction time of 6 min with 10 ml…
Mathematical modeling of the biofiltration of ethyl acetate and toluene and their mixture
2009
Abstract A dynamic model for ethyl acetate and toluene removal by biofiltration is presented. Haldane-type kinetic expressions that include the oxygen limitation, the inhibition effect due to high concentration of substrate, and the cross-inhibition between substrates have been considered. A decrease in the biomass density with the bed height was proposed to represent the performance of peat biofilters over a broad range of operating conditions. Experimental yield coefficients have been derived from the experimental CO 2 production data. The unknown kinetic parameters of the model along with the coefficient for axial biomass density distribution were calibrated using experimental data from …
Removal of ethyl acetate, n-hexane and toluene from waste air in a membrane bioreactor under continuous and intermittent feeding conditions
2012
BACKGROUND: European Union environmental policy has focused on abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from industrial emissions, and new European VOC emission limits have been established. This study analyzes the performance of a composite membrane bioreactor treating air stream contaminated with ethyl acetate, n-hexane and toluene under continuous and intermittent feeding conditions. RESULTS: The system was operated under continuous feeding conditions: removal efficiencies (REs) higher than 99% were obtained for inlet loads up to 200 g m−3 h−1 and empty bed residence times (EBRTs) as short as 15 s for ethyl acetate. A maximum elimination capacity of 75 g m−3 h−1 (RE ∼66%) at an EBR…
The Seasonality Impact of the BTEX Pollution on the Atmosphere of Arad City, Romania
2021
Benzene, toluene, and total BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) concentrations registered for one year (2016) have been determined every month for one high-density traffic area. The assessment was performed in Arad City, Romania, to evaluate these pollutants and their influence on the inhabitants’ health. The contaminants were sampled using a static sampling method and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Benzene was the most dominant among the BTEX compounds—the average concentrations ranged from 18.00 ± 1.32 µg m−3 in December to 2.47 ± 0.74 µg m−3 in August. The average toluene concentration over the year was 4.36 ± 2.42 µg m−3 (with a maximum of 9…
Determining exhaust fumes exposure in chainsaw operations
2016
Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate the inhalation exposure of forest operators to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes) contained in the exhaust fumes released from chainsaws and to suggest possible countermeasures. The study was carried out in four silvicultural treatments (coppice clearcut, conifer thinning, conifer pruning, and sanitary cut), using three types of chainsaw fuel (normal two-stroke petrol mix and two alkylate fuels). Eighty personal air samples were collected; IOM samplers combined with Amberlite XAD-2 sorbent tubes were used for collecting PAHs and Radiello® samplers were used for BTEX. Resu…
A Qualitative Analysis of Secondary Mechanisms in SEC of Polymers Through the Mean Value of the Viscosimetric Exponent
2001
Abstract Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) universal calibration curves for poly(dimethylsiloxane), polybutadiene and poly(2-vinylpyridine) samples have been obtained in columns packed with cross-linked polystyrene gel using cyclohexane, toluene, benzene, dioxane and tetrahydrofuran as eluents at 25°C. The eluents exhibit different thermodynamic quality for the polymeric solutes and for the gel matrix which is reflected in the values of their Mark-Houwink-Sakurada exponents a. The plots of log(hydrodynamic volume) versus retention volume for the polymeric solutes in different eluents are displaced to higher retention volumes than that of THF-polybutadiene (ideal SEC), evidencing the exist…
Polymerizable ring-shaped molecules containing aspartic acid: synthesis and free radical polymerization of a macrocycle derived from (N'-methacryloyl…
1999
A novel polymerizable macrocycle, 6, was prepared using high dilution techniques. Starting from N-(N'-methacryloyl-11-aminoundecanoyl)-L-aspartic acid dimethyl ester (2), N-(N'methacryloyl-11-aminoundecanoyl)-α,β-bis( 4,9-dioxadodecane-1,12-diamine)-L-aspartic acid amide (4) was obtained via amino-lysis with the bifunctional amine 4,9-dioxadodecane-1,12-diamine (3) in high excess. Addition of the free amino groups to toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (5) under high dilution provided macrocycle 6. The existence and purity of 6 were confirmed by mass spectrometry, NMR and IR spectroscopy, and HPLC. The methacrylic function was used to build up oligomers by free radical polymerization, using AIBN as an…
Elastomeric Organosilicon Micronetworks
1997
Trifunctional methyltrimethoxysilane and bifunctional dimethyldimethoxysilane monomers were cocondensed in water in the presence of surfactant. Strictly spherical micronetworks of narrow size distribution were obtained for particle sizes 10 nm < R < 30 nm. By special “endcapping” reactions all reactive SiOH groups were removed quantitatively, and the resulting micronetworks become soluble in common organic solvents like toluene, THF, or chloroform. For contents of trifunctional monomer larger than 50 mol % the particles do not swell irrespective of the choice of the solvent, whereas for lower mole fractions of trimethoxysilane an increasing swelling ratio is observed. Below 2.5 mol % trifun…
