Oromandibular dystonia: A dental approach

Oromandibular dystonia consists of prolonged spasms of contraction of the muscles of the mouth and jaw. Primary idiopathic forms and secondary forms exist. Secondary dystonia develops due to environmental factors; some cases of cranial dystonia after dental procedure have been reported, but the causal relationship between these procedures and dystonia remains unclear. Traumatic situations in the mouth, such as poor aligned dentures or multiple teeth extractions may cause an impairment of proprioception of the oral cavity, leading to subsequent development of dystonia. One reason for the mammalian clade’s success is the evolutionary diversity of their teeth. In herbivores, this is represented by high‐crowned teeth evolved to compensate for wear caused by dietary abrasives like phytoliths and grit. The nasus gland: A new gland in soldiers of Angularitermes (Termitidae, Nasutitermitinae)

Termites have developed many exocrine glands, generally dedicated to defence or communication. Although a few of these glands occur in all termite species, or represent synapomorphies of larger clades, others are morphological innovations of a single species, or a few related species. Here, we describe the nasus gland, a new gland occurring at the base of the nasus of Angularitermes soldiers. The nasus gland is composed of class 1, 2, and 3 secretory cells, a rare combination that is only shared by the sternal and tergal glands of some termites and cockroaches. Dental trauma can involve injuries to hard tissues and pulp, to periodontal tissues, to bone tissue, and to gingiva and oral mucosa. The aetiology of dental injuries is multi-factorial as they are caused by a complex array of individual clinical factors and social/environmental determinants. Traumatic dental injuries are mainly sustained during sports, through accidents and as a direct result of violence.
