18F-FDG PET imaging of breast cancer : evaluation of the metabolic behaviour of the different breast cancer subtypes and prediction of the tumor resp…

2015

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) with 18Fluoro-deoxyglucose (18F-FDG) is the reference imaging examination for in-vivo quantification of the glucidic metabolism of tumour cells. It allows for the monitoring of tumour metabolic changes during chemotherapy. Breast cancer comprises several distinct genomic entities with different biological characteristics and clinical behaviours, leading to different tailored treatments. The aim of this doctoral thesis was to evaluate the relationship between the different biological entities of breast cancer and the tumour metabolic behaviour during neoadjuvant chemotherapy. We have also retrieved, among the various metabolic parameters on PET images, the …

Pancreaticoduodenal arteries aneurysms: Evaluation of frequency and association with celiac artery stenosis due to compression by median arcuate liga…

2019

The aim of the study is to evaluate the prevalence of pancreaticoduodenal arteries (PDA) aneurysms in a large population, and to define possible correlations with celiac artery stenosis due to compression by the median arcuate ligament. Radiological reports of abdominal contrast-enhanced CT scans of 18,180 patients were scrutinized to identify patients with true PDA aneurysms. Two abdominal radiologists classified the aneurysms according to size, location and morphology and scored the presence of celiac artery stenosis due to either median arcuate ligament compression or atherosclerotic disease. Eleven true PDA aneurysms were identified in 10 patients. Nine out of 10 patients had stenosis o…

Classification of SD-OCT volumes with multi pyramids, LBP and HOG descriptors: application to DME detections.

2016

This paper deals with the automated detection of Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) volumes. Our method considers a generic classification pipeline with preprocessing for noise removal and flattening of each B-Scan. Features such as Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and Local Binary Patterns (LBP) are extracted and combined to create a set of different feature vectors which are fed to a linear-Support Vector Machines (SVM) Classifier. Experimental results show a promising sensitivity/specificity of 0.75/0.87 on a challenging dataset.

Abstract. In X-ray computed microtomography (μXCT) image processing is the most important operation prior to image analysis. Such processing mainly involves artefact reduction and image segmentation. We propose a new two-stage post-reconstruction procedure of an image of a geological rock core obtained by polychromatic cone-beam μXCT technology. In the first stage, the beam-hardening (BH) is removed applying a best-fit quadratic surface algorithm to a given image data set (reconstructed slice), which minimizes the BH offsets of the attenuation data points from that surface. The final BH-corrected image is extracted from the residual data, or the difference between the surface elevation valu…

Multiscale analyses and characterizations of surface topographies

2018

International audience; This work studies multiscale analyses and characterizations of surface topographies from the engineering and scientific literature with an emphasis on production engineering research and design. It highlights methods that provide strong correlations between topographies and performance or topographies and processes, and methods that can confidently discriminate topographies that were processed or that perform differently. These methods have commonalities in geometric characterizations at certain scales, which are observable with statistics and measurements. It also develops a semantic and theoretical framework and proposes a new system for organizing and designating …

Effective elastic properties of biocomposites using 3D computational homogenization and X-ray microcomputed tomography

2021

A 3D computational homogenization method based on X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT) was proposed and implemented to investigate how the fiber weight fraction, orthotropy and orientation distribution affect the effective elastic properties of regenerated cellulose fiber-polylactic acid (PLA) biocomposites. Three-dimensional microstructures reconstructed by means of the X-ray μCT were used as the representative volume elements (RVEs) and incorporated into the finite element solver within the computational homogenization framework. The present method used Euclidean bipartite matching technique so as to eliminate the generation of artificial periodic boundaries and use the in-situ solution d…

Monotony Based Imaging in EIT

2010

We consider the problem of determining conductivity anomalies inside a body from voltage‐current measurements on its surface. By combining the monotonicity method of Tamburrino and Rubinacci with the concept of localized potentials, we derive a new imaging method that is capable of reconstructing the exact (outer) shape of the anomalies. We furthermore show that the method can be implemented without solving any non‐homogeneous forward problems and show a first numerical result.

Testing models of dental development in the earliest bony vertebrates, Andreolepis and Lophosteus

2012

Theories on the development and evolution of teeth have long been biased by the fallacy that chondrichthyans reflect the ancestral condition for jawed vertebrates. However, correctly resolving the nature of the primitive vertebrate dentition is challenged by a dearth of evidence on dental development in primitive osteichthyans. Jaw elements from the Silurian–Devonian stem-osteichthyansLophosteusandAndreolepishave been described to bear a dentition arranged in longitudinal rows and vertical files, reminiscent of a pattern of successional development. We tested this inference, using synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM) to reveal the pattern of skeletal development preser…

Surface and volume non-invasive methods for the structural monitoring of the bass-relief ‘Madonna con Bambino’ (Gorizia, Northern Italy)

2016

Structural analysis of marble statues, carried out by non-invasive and in situ methods, is crucial to define the state of conservation of the artworks and to identify the deterioration phenomena that can affect them. In this work, we combined in situ non-destructive techniques, ultrasonic tomography (US), ultraviolet-induced visible fluorescence (UV-IF) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to study the bass-relief ‘Madonna con Bambino’ (Gorizia, Italy). The US revealed the presence of some metallic pivots, associated with areas of high sound velocity; moreover, a more degraded area has been identified in the lower part of the bass-relief. The acquired UV-IF image confirmed the presence of surface d…
