Far Space Remapping by Tool Use: A rTMS Study Over the Right Posterior Parietal Cortex

2015

Abstract Background In previous studies, rTMS has been successfully employed to interfere with the right posterior parietal cortex (rPPC) inducing neglect-like behavior in healthy subjects. Several studies have shown that the use of tools can modulate the boundaries between near and far space: indeed when far space is reached by the stick, far space can be remapped as near. Objective The aim of the present study was to investigate whether once that rTMS on the rPPC has selectively induced neglect-like bias in the near space (but not in the far space), neglect can appears also in the far space when the subjects used a tool to perform the task. Methods Fifteen right-handed healthy subjects ex…

Many national and international studies have concentrated on the evaluation and promotion of the inclusive qualities of schools. It is a complex issue which has led to wide debate and a variety of contributions which in turn highlight the need for a tool capable of measuring the inclusive quality of our schools in order to determine the empirical evidence regarding this topic. This article presents the results of an experiment in drafting a questionnaire in order to measure the inclusive quality of the school system perceived by its pupils. The questionnaire is intended as an evaluation and selfevaluation tool that enables the inclusive quality generated by the context to be measured as it is perceived by pupils. At the same time the tool allows reflection processes amongst teachers to be promoted so that they can implement educational activities which contribute to the planning and control of inclusive teaching practices. This contribution puts forward an original tool for measuring the inclusive quality of the school system perceived by pupils attending primary school in several Sicilian towns. It was administered in its definitive version to a sample of 1652 children. The psychometric properties of the tool and the significance it can hold in the areas of planning in research and of educational design are presented in this paper.Settore M-PED/03 - Didattica E Pedagogia Speciale

Metal Matrix Composites - Mmc - Turning: Comparison of Tool Materials

2002

The main properties required to the modem cutting tools to be employed in production, are both high wear resistance and chemical stability. In this last years, in the machining of MMCs several kinds of coated tools have been developed; they are characterized by high hardness to resist to the relevant strength and abrasive action of the reinforce fibers or particles, arranged inside the matrix. In turning of MMC the employ of Tungsten Carbide tools coated with Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) have shown to be very effective, whereas they are very expensive thus increasing the production costs.

Prediction of Tool Wear Progress in Machining of Carbon Steel using different Tool Wear Mechanismsl

2008

In this paper the prediction of tool wear on carbide uncoated tools was taken into account. In particular, two different tool wear models based on the diffusion mechanism and on the abrasion mechanism were considered. The calibration of the utilized models was done using the results obtained by experimental analysis performed on an orthogonally machined AISI 1020 tube. Once the calibration was executed, numerical simulations, for both the utilized tool wear models, were simultaneously performed with the aim to test the capability of the proposed numerical procedure. The comparison between the two tool wear mechanisms for predicting the flank tool wear is discussed in the paper.

Machinability of Engineering Materials

2008

Chapter 13 provides comprehensive knowledge regarding machinability of construction materials and characterizes various meanings of this specific material feature, allowing effective selection of machining conditions. Factors affecting machinability and typical causes of low machinability are discussed. Three groups of machinability criteria are selected, including basic, substitutive and auxiliary ones. In particular, the cutting speed corresponding to economic or high productivity criteria and obtainable surface roughness are distinguished as basic machinability criteria. Relative and absolute machining rating systems are highlighted, and appropriate material groups and values of the mach…

Influence of machining conditions on friction in metal cutting process – A review

2019

This paper presents a range of variable machining factors which influence substantially friction directly or by the tool wear developed in the cutting zone. The group of direct factors include the workpiece and cutting tool materials coupled, the cutting/sliding velocity, cooling media supplied to the tool-chip contact zone, modification of the tool contact faces by micro-texturing. Special attention was paid to the tool wear evolution and its pronounced effect on changes of the contact conditions.

Wear Analysis During Friction Stir Processing of A359+20%SiC MMC

2009

Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) are very interesting materials for applications in the automotive and aerospace fields, since they combine the lightness of Aluminium with the strength of the ceramic reinforcement. These materials are very difficult to join and conventional welding techniques are not applicable, whereas solid-state welding techniques, like Friction Stir Welding (FSW), could be a solution. However very hard tool materials will need to be chosen in order to overcome the problem of heavy abrasive tool wear. In this work the wear behaviour of coated and uncoated steel tools has been investigated in the Friction Stir Processing of extruded bars in A359 + 20%SiC. AISI 1040 steel was…

Tool Path Design in Friction Stir Spot Welding of AA6082-T6 Aluminum Alloys

2007

In the paper, a variation of the Friction Stir Spot Welding (FSSW) process has been considered. In particular, a particular tool path is given after the sinking phase nearby the initial penetration site. The process mechanics was highlighted and the joint strength was considered at the varying of the most relevant process parameters. Furthermore macro and micro analyses were developed in order to highlight the process mechanics and the local material microstructure evolution. The investigated technology appears a promising joining technique in order to develop effective spot joints.

On the influence of tool path in friction stir spot welding of aluminum alloys

2008

Abstract Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) has been proposed as an effective technology to spot weld the so-called “difficult to be welded” metal alloys. In the paper, a variation of the FSSW process has been considered. A tool path is given after the sinking phase nearby the initial penetration site; in this way a larger welding spot is obtained and more material is involved in the bonding process. The process mechanics of such modified FSSW process is highlighted and the joint strength undergoing tensile tests is considered at the varying both of the assigned tool path and of a few process parameters. Macro- and micro-analyses are made in order to analyze the local material microstructure…

Material Flow in FSW of AA7075 - T6 butt joint: numerical simulations and experimental verifications

2006

Friction stir welding (FSW) has reached a large interest in the scientific community and in the recent years also in the industrial environment, owing to the advantages of such solid state welding process with respect to the classic ones. Advanced finite element method tools are needed in order to develop an effective engineering of the processes; quantitative results can be acquired from numerical simulations once the basic information such as the material flow is certain. A 3D Lagrangian implicit coupled rigid viscoplastic model has already been developed by the authors to simulate FSW of butt joints. In the present paper the material flow in the FSW of AA7075–T6 butt joints is investigat…
