Half-width plots, a simple tool to predict peak shape, reveal column kinetics and characterise chromatographic columns in liquid chromatography: Stat…
2013
Peak profiles in chromatography are characterised by their height, position, width and asymmetry; the two latter depend on the values of the left and right peak half-widths. Simple correlations have been found between the peak half-widths and the retention times. The representation of such correlations has been called half-width plots. For isocratic elution, the plots are parabolic, although often, the parabolas can be approximated to straight-lines. The plots can be obtained with the half-widths/retention time data for a set of solutes experiencing the same kinetics, eluted with a mobile phase at fixed or varying composition. When the analysed solutes experience different resistance to mas…
Assessing mentalization in psychotherapy: first validation of the Mentalization Imbalances Scale
2018
The aim of this study was to provide data on the preliminary validation of a clinician-report multidimensional assessment measure of mentalization (Mentalization Imbalances Scale, MIS). A random national sample of psychotherapists (N=190) completed the MIS to identify mentalization imbalances, and the Personality Disorder Checklist to assess the personality disorders (PDs) of randomly selected patients currently in their care. Factor analysis confirmed the presence of six factors that represented different imbalances of mentalization: cognitive, affective, automatic, external, imbalance toward others, and imbalance toward self. We found several significant relationships between patients’ me…
Introducing a novel mesh following technique for approximation-free robotic tool path trajectories
2017
Abstract Modern tools for designing and manufacturing of large components with complex geometries allow more flexible production with reduced cycle times. This is achieved through a combination of traditional subtractive approaches and new additive manufacturing processes. The problem of generating optimum tool-paths to perform specific actions (e.g. part manufacturing or inspection) on curved surface samples, through numerical control machinery or robotic manipulators, will be increasingly encountered. Part variability often precludes using original design CAD data directly for toolpath generation (especially for composite materials), instead surface mapping software is often used to gener…
The Social Exclusion Bench Tool (SEBT): A visual way of assessing interpersonal social exclusion
2021
People usually prefer to appear with an inclusive and positive attitude to others’ eyes. For this reason, the self-report scales assessing social exclusion intentions are often biased by social desirability. In this work, we present an innovative graphical tool, named Social Exclusion Bench Tool (SEBT), for assessing social exclusion not influenced by social desirability. The tool is based on the consistency between social distance and physical distance evaluation. The results showed that in two samples of adults from Italy (N = 252) and the UK (N = 254), the SEBT positively correlated with self-report measures of social exclusion, but not with the social desirability measure. The tool has …
Developing a Tool Point Control Scheme for a Hydraulic Crane Using Interactive Real-time Dynamic Simulation
2010
This paper describes the implementation of an interactive real-time dynamic simulation model of a hydraulic crane. The user input to the model is given continuously via joystick and output is presented continuously in a 3D animation. Using this simulation model, a tool point control scheme is developed for the specific crane, considering the saturation phenomena of the system and practical implementation. THE VALIDATION OF A SELF-ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR THE TEACHER'S PRACTICES THAT EMBRACES THE NEURO-EDUCATIONAL APPROACH
2021
This contribution intends to present a study and research path that, starting from the theoretical framework of neuro-education, has led to the identification of five indicators (transversal area, socio-emotional-affective area, cognitive area, linguistic-communicative area, praxico-motor) on the basis of which a neuro-evaluation tool for teachers was built and validated: Self-assessment questionnaire of neuro-didactic and educational practices for teachers. Neuroscientific research is offering numerous points of reflection-action on the functioning of the brain and on how to modify the teaching and the educational proposal to improve the performance and growth of the person. However, the p…
Fixed speed wind turbine generator model validation and dynamic simulation using Matlab/Simulink
2007
In the last two decades an increasing amount of electricity has been generated from renewable sources in order to mitigate the environmental impact of the conventional power plants. In the next future wind turbines may affect the behaviour of electrical power system. This paper describes the model of a typical fixed speed wind turbine connected to the grid; the model is developed in the simulation tool Matlab/Simulink. It’s composed by the aerodynamic system, the shaft model (two-mass system), the induction generator (fifth order model) and the stall control system of the wind turbine rotor. The validation of the wind turbine model is made in steady-state operation, and the results are veri…
Nomograph for rapid technical and economic assessment of solar thermal systems for DHW production
2012
Abstract Different types of tools, software and empirical methods to size and assess the performance of solar thermal systems are available today. A quick and easy-to-use graphical tool is proposed here. It is based on a single diagram, called a nomograph, which embeds technical and economic information, allowing the optimisation of the size and performance of a solar thermal system starting from the main input parameters, such as the specific costs of the system and the auxiliary fuel. The optimal surfaces are calculated as a function of the fuel cost through several regressions made on data from the application of the F-Chart method for a set of system configurations. The authors have fou…
Tool Path Design in Friction Stir Welding of AA6082-T6 Aluminium Alloy
2007
In the paper, a variation of the Friction Stir Spot Welding (FSSW) process has been considered. In particular, a particular tool path is given after the sinking phase nearby the initial penetration site. The process mechanics was highlighted and the joint strength was considered at the varying of the most relevant process parameters. Furthermore macro and micro analyses were developed in order to highlight the process mechanics and the local material microstructure evolution. The investigated technology appears a promising joining technique in order to develop effective spot joints.
Interdependence Between Tool Fracture and Wear
1985
Wear and fracture are the main causes of tool scrapping. However fracture plays a major role for increasing values of the hardness and brittleness of tool materials or when low-cobalt tungsten carbides are used or in interrupted cutting conditions where it is the most relevant factor for tool scrapping. In order to obtain the optimal values of the cutting speed both these factors should be considered. The hypothesis of stochastic independence among them simplifies the mathematical formulation of the optimization problem; but experimental investigations do not agree with this assumption and, as a matter of fact, the probability density function of tool fracture results to be dependent on the…
