The bosonic analogs of topological insulators have been proposed in numerous theoretical works, but their experimental realization is still very rare, especially for spin systems. Recently, two-dim...

Dynamics and topological mass of skyrmionic spin structures (presentation video)

2014

Skyrmions are topologically protected particle-like configurations, with a topological complexity described by their Skyrmion number. In magnetic systems, they have been numerically predicted to exhibit rich dynamics, such as the gyrotropic and breathing modes, dominated by their topology. Recent experimental advances brought their static manipulation well under control. However, their dynamical behaviour is largely unexplored experimentally. In this work, we provide with the first direct observation of eigenmode skyrmion dynamics. In particular, we present dynamical imaging data with high temporal and spatial resolution to demonstrate the GHz gyrotropic mode of a single skyrmion bubble, as…

ChemInform Abstract: Tuning the Defect Configurations in Nematic and Smectic Liquid Crystalline Shells

2013

Thin liquid crystalline shells surrounding and surrounded by aqueous phases can be conveniently produced using a nested capillary microfluidic system, as was first demonstrated by Fernandez-Nieves et al. in 2007. By choosing particular combinations of stabilizers in the internal and external phases, different types of alignment, uniform or hybrid, can be ensured within the shell. Here, we investigate shells in the nematic and smectic phases under varying boundary conditions, focusing in particular on textural transformations during phase transitions, on the interaction between topological defects in the director field and inclusions in the liquid crystal (LC), and on the possibility to relo…

A remark on weakly convex continuous mappings in topological linear spaces

2009

Abstract Let C be a compact convex subset of a Hausdorff topological linear space and T : C → C a continuous mapping. We characterize those mappings T for which T ( C ) is convexly totally bounded.

On fuzzification of topological categories

2014

This paper shows that (L,M)-fuzzy topology of U. Hohle, T. Kubiak and A. Sostak is an instance of a general fuzzification procedure for topological categories, which amounts to the construction of a new topological category from a given one. This fuzzification procedure motivates a partial dualization of the machinery of tower extension of topological constructs of D. Zhang, thereby providing the procedure of tower extension of topological categories. With the help of this dualization, we arrive at the meta-mathematical result that the concept of (L,M)-fuzzy topology and the notion of approach space of R. Lowen are ''dual'' to each other.

TOPOLOGICAL PARTIAL *-ALGEBRAS: BASIC PROPERTIES AND EXAMPLES

1999

Let [Formula: see text] be a partial *-algebra endowed with a topology τ that makes it into a locally convex topological vector space [Formula: see text]. Then [Formula: see text] is called a topological partial *-algebra if it satisfies a number of conditions, which all amount to require that the topology τ fits with the multiplier structure of [Formula: see text]. Besides the obvious cases of topological quasi *-algebras and CQ*-algebras, we examine several classes of potential topological partial *-algebras, either function spaces (lattices of Lp spaces on [0, 1] or on ℝ, amalgam spaces), or partial *-algebras of operators (operators on a partial inner product space, O*-algebras).

HIGH-PRECISION MONTE CARLO DETERMINATION OF α/ν IN THE 3D CLASSICAL HEISENBERG MODEL

1994

To study the role of topological defects in the three-dimensional classical Heisenberg model we have simulated this model on simple cubic lattices of size up to 803, using the single-cluster Monte Carlo update. Analysing the specific-heat data of these simulations, we obtain a very accurate estimate for the ratio of the specific-heat exponent with the correlation-length exponent, α/ν, from a usual finite-size scaling analysis at the critical coupling Kc. Moreover, by fitting the energy at Kc, we reduce the error estimates by another factor of two, and get a value of α/ν, which is comparable in accuracy to best field theoretic estimates.

Axiomatic Foundations Of Fixed-Basis Fuzzy Topology

1999

This paper gives the first comprehensive account on various systems of axioms of fixed-basis, L-fuzzy topological spaces and their corresponding convergence theory. In general we do not pursue the historical development, but it is our primary aim to present the state of the art of this field. We focus on the following problems:
