Unobserved tourism

2015

Having more reliable statistics is essential for policy-makers to be able to make effective decisions. Nevertheless, measuring the number of tourists in a given destination is not an easy task. After reviewing the main problems affecting official statistics on tourism, this paper proposes a general framework by formalizing a theoretical model in which tourism nights and trips in a given destination are broken down into observed and unobserved components, according to the European system of tourism statistics. The main approaches related to the measurement of unobserved tourism are discussed, and some empirical findings in Sicily (Italy) are presented in order to highlight the actual magnitu…

The Factor Structure of Medical Tourist Satisfaction: Exploring Key Drivers of Choice, Delight, and Frustration

2021

The current study intends to contribute to a better understanding of the medical tourism experience. In particular, this study uses data from a survey-based study conducted on a sample of 1,209 medical tourists in Croatia. On the one hand, this study aims to explore and shed light on the decision-making process of medical tourists, and, on the other hand, to reveal which elements of both the medical institution and the destination where it is located, have largest potentials to drive medical tourist delight and/or frustration, in accordance with the three-factor theory of customer satisfaction.

CLUSTERING TOURIST LOCAL SYSTEMS BY VERTEX PARTITIONING AND LOCAL SEARCH

2014

Despite the importance of tourism as a leading …

A methodology and algorithms for an optimal identification of Tourist Local Systems

2007

In last years, despite the emphasis on the importance of tourism as a leading industry in the development of a country’s economy, there is a lack of criteria and methodologies for the identification, the promotion and the governance of Tourism Local Systems (TLS). Moreover, nowadays an important debate is more and more emerging on the sustainable tourism development which involve three interconnected aspects: environmental, socio-cultural and economic. To this end, in this paper, a rigorous mathematical model is proposed for the optimal identification and dimensioning of TLS. The model here presented consists of a two stage methodology: at first, all the factors that characterize a geograph…

TRADITIONAL RURAL LANDSCAPES IN ITALY BETWEEN CONSERVATION AND TOURIST DEVELOPMENT

2010

Is tourism firm competitiveness driven by different internal or external specific factors?: New empirical evidence from Spain

2015

Abstract The quest to understand the multilevel antecedents of competitiveness has led to a separation of approaches. On one side of the question are the environment theories that analyze the structural characteristics of the general and competitive environment. On the other side are the Resource Based View and its extensions that highlight firm-specific resources and capabilities as the main basis of firms' competitiveness. However, in recent years the nature of competition and shifting economic conditions have given rise to new theoretical approaches that complement the assumptions underlying both environmental and firm theories. Specifically, this study contributes by examining the regio…

Sustainable Practices in Spanish Hotels: A Response to Concerns on Quality of Life in Highly Visited Tourism Areas

2018

The intense tourism activity may involve significant negative impacts on the quality of life in tourism destinations with a high number of tourist arrivals. The objective of this chapter is to explore the available tools and measures that hotels may implement to mitigate or cope with these negative economic, social and environmental impacts. An example of hotel managers’ perceptions of the importance of the main environmentally sustainable practices in hospitality to mitigate the negative impact of the tourist industry on the quality of life of residents in highly visited tourism destinations in the Mediterranean coast of Spain is provided, with the purpose of stimulating further research i…
