Fortfying pre-existing structures: tower houses and fortified enceintes, in Garofalo E, Scaduto F, Fortified Palaces in Early Modern Sicily. Models, …
2014
In early modern Sicily the extra-urban fortified residence was a limited but important architectural phenomenon. Starting from the last decades of XV century previous residential buildings, especially towers, were in some cases renewed by the introduction of a surrounding fortified perimeter with bastions (i.e. Donjon of Adrano; tower of Migaido). The paper presents a sequence of examples most representative of the architectural phenomenon, specially focusing on the models in use; the intertwining between residential and military needs in the conformation of inside and outside spaces; finally, the relation between image strategy and practical function.
'Bastioned’ residences: models and projects, in Garofalo E, Scaduto F, Fortified Palaces in Early Modern Sicily. Models, Image Strategy, Functions
2014
In early modern Sicily the extra-urban fortified residence was a limited but important architectural phenomenon. Starting from the last decades of the fifteenth century, previous residential buildings, especially Towers, were in some cases renewed by the introductio of a surronding fortified perimeter with bastioned (e.g. Dojon of Adrano; tower of Migaido). Subsequently the genesis of new palaces with bastions, bulwarks and pseudo- bulwarks is certainly linked to contemporary publications and specialized treaties, but local conditions played an equaly important role. The position along the Mediterranean frontier the islamic world and the presence of numerous military engineers created an en…
«Nolite extollere in altum cornu vestrum».
2022
This article addresses a series of hypothesis concerning the octagonal space indicated in Guarino Guarini’s drawings of the Church of the Santissima Annunziata in Messina in his Architettura Civile. The façade of the church was completed around 1660 by Guarino Guarini and presented a «prodigiously high» bell tower at the corner, which collapsed during the 1693 earthquake and was later rebuilt shorter. The entire church was destroyed during the 1908 earthquake. Guarini’s drawings published in his treatise suggest that there must have been an octagonal chapel with columns at the corners under the tower; perhaps it was the baptistery of the church. Alternatively, the octagon can be identified …
2015
During the 2014 campaign exhaustive excavations of the early medieval mausoleum and monastic tombs situated between the mausoleum and the bell tower south of the abbey church of St Peter in Osor were completed. The results of the excavation of the interior of the reduced church revealed several floor levels that are contemporary to the Romanesque basilica, as well as the foundations of the Romanesque chancel screen situated in front of the north apse, and the presence of many burials. Some of them can be identified as privileged tombs, due to their position and their contents. Several floor levels corresponding to the phases anterior to the Romanesque church were also discovered, although i…
Virtual tour through the towers of the defensive system in the province of Salerno
2019
The coastal towers of the defensive system in the province of Salerno are architectures developed over time; they are buildings belonging to an extended strategic plan of the coastal territory useful to defend populations and cities from the ancient enemy attacks. Hence, their location comes from careful studies in which the orographic characteristics of the place and the visual connection between a tower and another played a fundamental role. The aim of this work is to focus the attention on the visual communication between the towers, or on the “dialogue” that the different artefacts entertain each other. In order to pursue this objective, a virtual tour that connects the different ancient…
2020
The fascinating nature of the Amalfi coast is the background for territories full of history and places of immense value. Starting from some of the main representations of the Salerno territory, it was possible to retrace the main evolutionary phases of the city and then focus on what is a ‘product’ of the events that have taken place over time, the Cetara Tower. The research and iconographic documentation, in fact, have made possible to highlight some of the transformations and superfetations that the tower, in the homonymous city, has undergone during the years; up to assume the current conformation
Astronomiskajam tornim - 150
2019
Mainījušies teleskopi, no…
Astronomiskajam tornim - 150
2019
No 1986. gada zvaigžņotās debess demonstrējumi notiek ļoti aktīvi, nomainījušies trīs teleskopi.
Assessing Planning Ability Across the Adult Life Span: Population-Representative and Age-Adjusted Reliability Estimates for the Tower of London (TOL-…
2015
Planning ahead the consequences of future actions is a prototypical executive function. In clinical and experimental neuropsychology, disc-transfer tasks like the Tower of London (TOL) are commonly used for the assessment of planning ability. Previous psychometric evaluations have, however, yielded a poor reliability of measuring planning performance with the TOL. Based on theory-grounded task analyses and a systematic problem selection, the computerized TOL-Freiburg version (TOL-F) was developed to improve the task's psychometric properties for diagnostic applications. Here, we report reliability estimates for the TOL-F from two large samples collected in Mainz, Germany (n = 3,770; 40-80 y…
Tower of London test: a comparison between conventional statistic approach and modelling based on artificial neural network in differentiating fronto…
2011
The early differentiation of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) from frontotemporal dementia (FTD) may be difficult. The Tower of London (ToL), thought to assess executive functions such as planning and visuo-spatial working memory, could help in this purpose. Twentytwo Dementia Centers consecutively recruited patients with early FTD or AD. ToL performances of these groups were analyzed using both the conventional statistical approaches and the Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) modelling. Ninety-four non aphasic FTD and 160 AD patients were recruited. ToL Accuracy Score (AS) significantly (p < 0.05) The use of hidden information contained in the different items of ToL and the non linear processing of…
