Altered glyoxalase-1 (GLO-1) activity and expression is associated with the development of late diabetic complications, malignancy and oxidative stress- and aging-related diseases. In the present study, we developed a flow cytometry method for GLO-1 detection in human leukocytes isolated from peripheral blood samples to investigate GLO-1 expression in leukocyte subsets from type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus patients (n = 11) and healthy subjects (n = 8). The flow cytometry analysis of GLO-1 in leukocytes showed that expression index of GLO-1-positive cells was slightly increased in mononuclear leukocytes from diabetic patients. The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL) are large group of autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorders with both enzymatic deficiency and structural protein dysfunction. Abstract Monolayers of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine at the interfaces waterbicylohexyl, waterdodecane and waterhexadecane were studied by fluorescence microscopy and thermodynamic measurements. The experiments show that the oil also partitions in the liquid condensed (LC) monolayer phase with concentration depending on the type of oil and the lateral pressure. In contrast to monolayers of dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine the larger molecular area per head group enables oil partitioning in the LC phase even if there is a mismatch between the aliphatic tails of liquid and alkane.

Abstract The thermodynamics of binding of two small hydrophobic ions such as norharman and tryptophan to neutral and negatively charged small unilamellar vesicles was investigated at pH 7.4 using fluorescence spectroscopy. Vesicles were formed at room temperature from dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) or DMPC/dimyristoylphosphatidic acid and DMPC/dimyristoylphosphatidylglycerol. A flow chamber has been constructed to use giant liposomes (diameter 5-50 microns) as model membranes for immunological studies and other experiments involving the interaction with water-soluble compounds. As an example of immunological importance, the insertion of purified K-antigen from Escherichia coli K1 has been studied. Despite its large hydrophilic part (poly-alpha-2,8-NeuAc), which is capped at its potential reducing end with phosphatidic acid acting as a lipid anchor group, this water-soluble material is readily incorporated into liposomal membranes of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC).
