Environmental Implications of Traffic Flow Delays: a Model for Urban Streets
2013
In this paper the problem of road's capacity is dealt in presence of perturbations of the vehicular flow. In particular, among the different disturbing causes, it is here considered the presence of vehicles parked along the road in relation to their parking activity. Having already established the delay, caused by those vehicles leaving their stationary positions and entering the traffic flow or by those who slow down the flow to park, it is possible to evaluate the changes in time running values. Related to these times delay, the extra pollutant emissions by a given urban running fleet is also evaluated, by utilizing emission factors depending on age, type, volume capacity and engine of th…
The Lean Urban Policies’ Design A values-centered method for sustainable urban planning.
In these past years, the necessity and urgency has emerged for policies tied to an alternate development to be efficiently applied, and not limited to single operations. The policies must be defined by a clear and effective method of action. Starting by investigating what are the relationship among human being, built environment and natural sources, in fact, we think it is possible to enrich the sustainable urban planning policies with new contents and possibly, new tools. By describing the frame, the objective is to define the most effective method, to be able to convey an effective project action and governance for the territory, to achieve predefined social and energy based objectives. …
A Network Tomography Approach for Traffic Monitoring in Smart Cities
2018
Traffic monitoring is a key enabler for several planning and management activities of a Smart City. However, traditional techniques are often not cost efficient, flexible, and scalable. This paper proposes an approach to traffic monitoring that does not rely on probe vehicles, nor requires vehicle localization through GPS. Conversely, it exploits just a limited number of cameras placed at road intersections to measure car end-to-end traveling times. We model the problem within the theoretical framework of network tomography, in order to infer the traveling times of all individual road segments in the road network. We specifically deal with the potential presence of noisy measurements, and t…
A scalable platform for safe and secure decentralized traffic management of multiagent mobile systems
2006
In this paper we describe the application of wireless sensor networking techniques to address the realization of a safe and secure decentralized traffic management system. We consider systems of many heterogeneous autonomous vehicles moving in a shared environment. Each vehicle is assumed to have different and possibly unspecified tasks, but they cooperate to avoid collisions. We are interested in designing a scalable architecture capable of accommodating a very large and dynamically changing number of vehicles, guaranteeing their safety, the achievement of their goals, and security against potential adversaries. By properly distributing and revoking cryptographic keys we are able to protec…

I traffici illeciti nel Mediterraneo. Persone, stupefacenti, tabacco. Report Italia
2019
The report analyzes the Italian criminal law related to four different kinds of traffic: smuggling of migrants, human trafficking, drug trafficking and cigarette smuggling. The report is part of a wider research (The New Era of Smuggling in the Mediterranean Sea. NESMeS) aimed at analyzing the above mentioned illicit trades in the Mediterranean Area, with special regards to the following countries: Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain. along with the Italian report, NESMeS research produces other six deliverables: one report per country, one criminological report and a final book (I traffici illeciti nel Mediterraneo. Persone, stupefacenti, tabacco. Militello, Spena, Mangiaracina, Sir…
