Impact Assessment of Skidding Extraction: Effects on Physical and Chemical Properties of Forest Soils and on Maple Seedling Growing along the Skid Tr…

2019

Several studies investigated soil disturbances caused on skid trails by forest logging. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the severity and the distance of disturbances along both sides from the trails. The aims of this study were: i) to investigate the changes in physical and chemical properties of soil along the sides of skidding trails

Improving IEEE 802.11 Performance in Chain Topologies through Distributed Polling and Network Coding

2009

Wireless multi-hop networks often rely on the use of IEEE 802.11 technology. Despite of the robustness of the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) for working in various network scenarios, it has been proven that critical inefficiencies can arise in the case of multi-hop packet forwarding. In this paper, we propose a MAC scheme, based on the virtualization of the Point Coordination Function, optimized for working on chain topologies with bidirectional traffic flows. Our scheme is based on a token-like access mechanism coupled with network coding. The basic idea is the use of multiple Point Coordinators (PCs) along the node chain, which are elected by passing special token fra…

Towards a SDN-based architecture for analyzing network traffic in cloud computing infrastructures

2015

Currently, network traffic monitoring tools do not fit well in the monitoring of cloud computing infrastructures. These tools are not integrated with the control plane of the cloud computing stack. This lack of integration causes a deficiency in the handling of the re-usage of IP addresses along virtual machines, a lack of adaption and reaction on highly frequent topology changes, and a lack of accuracy in the metrics gathered for the networking traffic flowing along the cloud infrastructure. The main contribution of this paper is to provide a novel SDN-based architecture to carry out the monitoring of network traffic in cloud infrastructures. The architecture in based on the integration be…

Have information technologies forgotten pedestrians?

2018

Worldwide, pedestrians make up close to half of all motor-vehicle related fatalities but disproportionally little of the research in Information Technologies (IT) in general and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in particular has aimed at pedestrian safety improvements. This paper analyses and compiles three different ways so that IT and ITS can be used in order to improve mobility and safety of pedestrians in urban spaces: (a) for contacting and/or being localized, (b) for guidance (leading/navigating), (c) for alerting or informing of a danger. The aim is to categorize recent experiences where ITS can improve pedestrians’ mobility and safety so that new ideas based on ITS will be d…

Intelligent transport systems harmonisation assessment: use case of some Spanish intelligent transport systems services

2013

From the 1980s, new telematic technologies have meant a great evolution in several areas. In the transportation domain, their use has implied the development and implementation of several intelligent transport systems (ITS). However, these deployments were done in an isolated way. Traffic managers, public and private organisations, stakeholders and others have implemented ITS without much perspective, that is, without providing ITS as services for end users. In the last few years, several European Union (EU) funded projects have been dealing with the development of harmonised ITS services. For example, the EasyWay Project is involving most of the European countries (EU member states and oth…

Lethal Traumatic Injuries due to Traffic Accidents

2019

The Global status report on road safety published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015 estimating information from 180 countries indicates that worldwide the total number of road traffic deaths has plateaued at 1.25 million per year. This report, the third Global status report on road safety, shows that low- and middle-income countries are more affected with a mortality rate of 90% of global road traffic deaths.

Performance evaluation of a measurement-based algorithm for distributed admission control in a DiffServ framework

2002

Distributed Admission Control in IP DiffServ environments is an emerging and promising research area. Distributed admission control solutions share the idea that no coordination among network routers (i.e. explicit signaling) is necessary, when the decision whether to admit or reject a new offered flow is pushed to the edge of the IP network. Proposed solutions differ in the degree of complexity required in internal network routers, and result in a different robustness and effectiveness in controlling the accepted traffic. This paper builds on a recently proposed distributed admission control solution, called GRIP (Gauge&Gate Reservation with Independent Probing), designed to integrate the …

A novel traffic splitting policy for performance improvement in wireless mesh networks

2009

Wireless mesh networks are expected to play an important role in the next-generation wireless communication systems as it can provide wide coverage and scalable broadband Internet access services. However, as more traffic is injected into the network it may lead to throughput degradation, packet loss and longer transmission delay. In this paper, we argue that network performance can be improved by cross-layer design over multiple layers and load balancing based on service types. Correspondingly, a novel traffic splitting policy which can potentially utilize diverse paths for transmitting traffic flows of different service types from the same router has been proposed and investigated. Such a…

The hedgehog receptor patched is involved in cholesterol transport.

2011

International audience; BACKGROUND: Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling plays a crucial role in growth and patterning during embryonic development, and also in stem cell maintenance and tissue regeneration in adults. Aberrant Shh pathway activation is involved in the development of many tumors, and one of the most affected Shh signaling steps found in these tumors is the regulation of the signaling receptor Smoothened by the Shh receptor Patched. In the present work, we investigated Patched activity and the mechanism by which Patched inhibits Smoothened. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using the well-known Shh-responding cell line of mouse fibroblasts NIH 3T3, we first observed that enhancement …
