The influence of organizational factors on road transport safety
2018
Road transport safety is a major concern across Europe due to the human and socio-economic costs associated with work-related traffic accidents. Traditional approaches have adopted regulatory and technical measures to prevent road accidents leaving aside the organizational factors that might contribute to road transport safety. However, contemporary sociotechnical systems theory acknowledges the need to take into account organizational factors. This study adopts a sociotechnical approach and it examines the relationship between a number of organizational factors (organizational learning and training) and road traffic accidents in the organizations under study. Our sample was composed of 107…
Long-term exposure to transportation noise and risk for atrial fibrillation: A Danish nationwide cohort study.
2022
Background: Epidemiological studies have linked transportation noise and cardiovascular diseases, however, atrial fibrillation (AF) has received limited attention. We aimed to investigate the association between transportation noise and AF risk. Methods: Over the period 1990–2017 we estimated road and railway noise (L den) at the most and least exposed façades for all residential addresses across Denmark. We estimated time-weighted mean noise exposure for 3.6 million individuals age ≥35 years. Of these, 269,756 incident cases of AF were identified with a mean follow-up of 13.0 years. Analyses were conducted using Cox proportional hazards models with adjustment for individual and area-level …
Postrenal anuria in pelvic or acetabular injury: a report of three cases.
1996
Renal failure due to obstruction by a retroperitoneal hematoma is a rarely discussed complication in pelvic or acetabular fractures. Three cases of this obstructive uropathy are presented. They were successfully treated with removal of the hematoma and draining of the retroperitoneal space.
ELSA air traffic simulator: An empirically grounded agent based model for the SESAR scenario
2015
This paper describes the Air Traffic Simulator produced by the ELSA project. It is partially based on interacting agents taking actions during strategic and tactical phases: air companies, network manager, pilots, and controllers. The simulator is highly modular and each part can be used independently of the others. The code is open source, ready to use and available for the research community. Some results concerning the future organization of the European Airspace (free-routing) are presented, using the full capabilities of the model. We found that the implementation of free-routing could have a positive impact on the safety event occurrences that will be reduced in number although spread…
The design of an agent based model of human activities and communications in cardiac resuscitation
2015
International audience; Cardio-pulmonary arrest is a common emergency situation causing over 400,000 deaths per year, more than a 1000 per day, in the USA alone. The goal of this work is to develop an agent based computer simulator that will allow trainers to experiment with different communication protocols, such as those found in air traffic control. This paper describes the first step in designing the simulator development. The design is based on an analysis of communications during real life training simulations using the FIPA standard categories.

THE ROLE OF SICILY IN THE MARITIME TRAFFIC OF AGRI-FOOD PRODUCTS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN
2011
This paper shows the results of a survey on trade flows to agri-food products among Sicily and the non-EU countries of the Union for the Mediterranean, through maritime transport. The aim of this paper is to outline the role that Sicily plays in respect of trade in agricultural products through the maritime mode considering its strategic location in the Mediterranean basin. Political reference scenario is that of the Union for the Mediterranean and EU Mediterranean Transport Policy (motorways of the sea). The work contains an analysis of the evolution of maritime trade in agri-food of Sicily, in the main ports of departure and arrival, with non-EU countries of the Union for the Mediterranea…
The vulnerability to exploitation of women migrant workers in agriculture in the EU: The need for a human rights and gender based approach
2018
This study, commissioned by the European Parliament’s Policy Department for Citizens' Rights and Constitutional Affairs at the request of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, explores the working conditions of migrant women in agriculture in the EU, focusing on some case studies in Italy and Spain. In particular, it aims to examine the factors that render women vulnerable to exploitation, paying attention to gendered dynamics and power relations. The study contends that to prevent and combat exploitation in agriculture it is necessary to implement concerted actions aimed at tackling, from a human rights and gender perspective, the structural factors of a socio-economic syste…
Coupling and Complexity of Interaction of STCA Networks
2009
This paper provides an overview on the results of an ENAV feasibility study, where we exploited an automatic safety data gathering tool to analyze the ATM system performances. In particular, it addresses the use of the EUROCONTROL tool, ASMT (Automatic Safety Monitoring Tool), as a support to monitor STCA performance. The contribution of this study is to explore how analysis methods derived from complex systems theory (i.e. network analysis) can assist in the understanding, monitoring and management of the performance of ATM systems. Our data show that a large number of STCAs do not occur in isolation, but rather that in roughly half of the cases the aircraft involved in an STCA are subsequ…
