Gephyromycin, the first bridged angucyclinone, from Streptomyces griseus strain NTK 14

2005

The new, highly oxygenated angucyclinone gephyromycin was isolated from an extract of a Streptomyces griseus strain. Its unprecedented ether-bridged structure was elucidated by NMR methods and substantiated by single crystal X-ray analysis. The absolute configuration was evidenced by quantum chemical CD calculations. Gephyromycin exhibits glutaminergic activity towards neuronal cells. Furthermore, the known compounds fridamycin E and dehydrorabelomycin were identified.

AbstractThis study contends that phenomenography offers both a useful research method and practical tools for developing education and training for career practitioners. Cardiovascular, ventilatory and total activity responses of brown trout to handling stress

Changes in total activity, heart and ventilation rates were observed in 2-year-old brown trout, following handling stress, using non-contact bioelectronic monitoring equipment. Experiments were carried out in laboratory conditions at water temperatures below 4° C, Transfer between tanks as well as 5 min restraint stress increased the total activity of fish for 24 to 48 h, after which it declined to near the pre-stress level. The transfer and struggle both elevated the heart rate for 3 to 4 days. Ventilation rate was elevated to a maximum of about 30% above the nominal level and recovered within 3 to 4 days. We detected binding of insecticidal crystal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis in one susceptible strain and six resistant strains of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, from Hawaii. Immunohistochemical tests with tissue sections from larval midguts showed specific binding of CryIA(a), CryIA(b), and CryIA(c) to brush border membranes. CryIE, which is not toxic to P. xylostella, did not bind to midgut tissues. Development and Characterization of Diamondback Moth Resistance to Transgenic Broccoli Expressing High Levels of Cry1C

ABSTRACT A field-collected colony of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella , had 31-fold resistance to Cry1C protoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis . After 24 generations of selection with Cry1C protoxin and transgenic broccoli expressing a Cry1C protein, the resistance that developed was high enough that neonates of the resistant strain could complete their entire life cycle on transgenic broccoli expressing high levels of Cry1C. The family Caulobacteraceae comprises prosthecate bacteria with a dimorphic cell cycle and also non-prosthecate bacteria. Cells of all described species divide by binary fission. Strain 0127_4T was isolated from forest soil in Baden Württemberg (Germany) and determined to be the first representative of the family Caulobacteraceae which divided by budding. Cells of strain 0127_4T were Gram-negative, rod-shaped, prosthecate, motile by means of a polar flagellum, non-spore-forming and non-capsulated. Effect of carbon source supply and its location on competition between inoculated and established bacterial strains in sterile soil microcosm

The aim of this work was to study how the location of a carbon source and of bacterial cells in soil can enhance the growth of a bacterial inoculum. Studies were performed using irradiated soil and two pairs of strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Pseudomonas fluorescens. For each species, an antibiotic-resistant mutant was used as inoculant and introduced into a sterile soil pre-colonised with its parent strain.
