Maternal body mass index, change in weight status from childhood to late adulthood and physical activity in older age

2021

This study aimed to examine the longitudinal associations of maternal body mass index (BMI), weight status in childhood and late adulthood and device-measured total physical activity (TPA) in older age. The study involves 552 participants from Helsinki Birth Cohort Study who were born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1934-1944. TPA was measured with a multisensory body monitor at a mean age of 70 years and expressed in metabolic equivalent of task hours/day (METh/d). Childhood overweight (BMI > 85th percentile) was based on school health records at 6-7 years of age, and late adulthood overweight (BMI >= 25 kg/m(2)) was based on clinical measurements at the mean age of 61 years. Childhood overweight…

Studies on the response of a water-Cherenkov detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory to atmospheric muons using an RPC hodoscope

2020

Extensive air showers, originating from ultra-high energy cosmic rays, have been successfully measured through the use of arrays of water-Cherenkov detectors (WCDs). Sophisticated analyses exploiting WCD data have made it possible to demonstrate that shower simulations, based on different hadronic-interaction models, cannot reproduce the observed number of muons at the ground. The accurate knowledge of the WCD response to muons is paramount in establishing the exact level of this discrepancy. In this work, we report on a study of the response of a WCD of the Pierre Auger Observatory to atmospheric muons performed with a hodoscope made of resistive plate chambers (RPCs), enabling us to selec…

An empirically grounded agent based simulator for the air traffic management in the SESAR scenario

2017

In this paper we present a simulator allowing to perform policy experiments relative to the air traffic management. Different SESAR solutions can be implemented in the model to see the reaction of the different stakeholders as well as other relevant metrics (delay, safety, etc). The model describes both the strategic phase associated to the planning of the flight trajectories and the tactical modifications occurring in the en-route phase. An implementation of the model is available as an open-source software and is freely accessible by any user. More specifically, different procedures related to business trajectories and free-routing are tested and we illustrate the capabilities of the mode…

A synoptic view of solar transient evolution in the inner heliosphere using the Heliospheric Imagers on STEREO

2009

[1] By exploiting data from the STEREO/heliospheric imagers (HI) we extend a well-established technique developed for coronal analysis by producing time-elongation plots that reveal the nature of solar transient activity over a far more extensive region of the heliosphere than previously possible from coronagraph images. Despite the simplicity of these plots, their power in demonstrating how the plethora of ascending coronal features observed near the Sun evolve as they move antisunward is obvious. The time-elongation profile of a transient tracked by HI can, moreover, be used to establish its angle out of the plane-of-the-sky; an illustration of such analysis reveals coronal mass ejection …

Collimation for CLIC

2003

The collimation system of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) must fulfil a number of conflicting requirements, namely it should (1) remove beam halo to reduce the detector background, (2) provide a minimum distance between collimators and collision point for muon suppression, (3) ensure collimator survival and machine protection against errand beam pulses, (4) not be excessively long, and (5) not amplify incoming trajectory fluctuations via the collimator wake fields. Two optical systems have been designed — the first linear, the second non‐linear —, which promise to meet all these requirements for the design beam energy of 1.5 TeV. We decribe the various design criteria, a preliminary perf…

Computing the full two-loop gluon Regge trajectory within Lipatov's high energy effective action

2013

We discuss computational details of our recent result, namely, the first derivation of the two-loop gluon Regge trajectory within the framework of Lipatov's high energy effective action. In particular, we elaborate on the direct evaluation of Feynman two-loop diagrams by using the Mellin-Barnes representations technique. Our result is in precise agreement with previous computations in the literature, providing this way a highly non-trivial test of the effective action and the proposed subtraction and renormalization scheme combined with our approach for the treatment of the loop diagrams.

Nuclear magnetic resonance: The contrast imaging problem

2011

Starting as a tool for characterization of organic molecules, the use of NMR has spread to areas as diverse as pharmacology, medical diagnostics (medical resonance imaging) and structural biology. Recent advancements on the study of spin dynamics strongly suggest the efficiency of geometric control theory to analyze the optimal synthesis. This paper focuses on a new approach to the contrast imaging problem using tools from geometric optimal control. It concerns the study of an uncoupled two-spin system and the problem is to bring one spin to the origin of the Bloch ball while maximizing the modulus of the magnetization vector of the second spin. It can be stated as a Mayer-type optimal prob…

The AD and ELENA orbit, trajectory and intensity measurement systems

2017

This paper describes the new Antiproton Decelerator (AD) orbit measurement system and the Extra Low ENergy Antiproton ring (ELENA) orbit, trajectory and intensity measurement system. The AD machine at European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is presently being used to decelerate antiprotons from 3.57 GeV/c to 100 MeV/c for matter vs anti-matter comparative studies. The ELENA machine, presently under commissioning, has been designed to provide an extra deceleration stage down to 13.7 MeV/c. The AD orbit system is based on 32 horizontal and 27 vertical electrostatic Beam Position Monitor (BPM) fitted with existing low noise front-end amplifiers while the ELENA system consists of 24 \…

“RecPack” a reconstruction toolkit

2004

We present a C++ toolkit to do tracking and vertex reconstruction. The toolkit incorporates common fitting methods, as the Kalman Filter, a framework to define a detector setup, a general navigation and a simple simulation. Furthermore, the toolkit provides a collection of interfaces which facilitates the addition of new fitting methods, trajectory models, geometrical objects, pattern recognition logic, etc. Although the toolkit was originally developed to be used in High Energy Physics, it could be applied to other fields.

Operation of the MAMI accelerator with a Wien filter based spin rotation system

2006

A compact spin rotation system based on a Wien filter has been installed at the Mainz microtron accelerator (MAMI). Under operation with varying spin rotation angles a significant change of focal length together with a shift of the central beam trajectory is expected. We demonstrate that these effects can be kept under control. As a consequence operation with spin rotation angles between 0° and ±90° has been achieved without compromising the beam quality and operational stability of MAMI.
