Abstract The Lewisian Complex of NW Scotland is a fragment of the North Atlantic Craton. It comprises mostly Archean tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) orthogneisses that were variably metamorphosed and reworked in the late Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic. Within the granulite facies central region of the mainland Lewisian Complex, discontinuous belts composed of ultramafic–mafic rocks and structurally overlying garnet–biotite gneiss (brown gneiss) are spatially associated with steeply-inclined amphibolite facies shear zones that have been interpreted as terrane boundaries. Abstract The Kane Megamullion oceanic core complex located along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (23°30′N, 45°20′W) exposes lower crust and upper mantle directly on the ocean floor. We studied chalcophile elements and sulfides in the ultramafic and mafic rocks of the crust-mantle transition and the mantle underneath. We determined mineralogical and elemental composition and the Cu isotope composition of the respective sulfides along with the mineralogical and elemental composition of the respective serpentines. Carbon isotope composition of CO2-rich inclusions in cumulate-forming mantle minerals from Stromboli volcano (Italy)

We report on measurements of concentration and carbon isotope composition (δ13CCO2) of CO2 trapped in fluid inclusions of olivine and clinopyroxene crystals separated from San Bartolo ultramafic cumulate Xenoliths (SBX) formed at mantle depth (i.e., beneath a shallow Moho supposed to be at 14.8 km). These cumulates, erupted about 2 ka ago at Stromboli volcano (Italy), have been already investigated by Martelli et al. (2014) mainly for Sr-Nd isotopes and for their noble gases geochemistry. The concentration of CO2 varies of one order of magnitude from 3.8·10− 8 mol g− 1 to 4.8·10− 7 mol g− 1, with δ13C values between − 2.8‰ and − 1.5‰ vs V-PDB. Abstract The Agardagh Tes-Chem complex (ATCC) in Tuva, Central Asia (50.5°N, 95°E) exposes a rare mafic to ultramafic crust-mantle fragment that developed within a late Neoproterozoic (~570 Ma) intra-oceanic island arc system that was accreted to the Tuva-Mongolian microcontinent during the formation of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Residual mantle rocks (harzburgites and dunites) are highly refractory with high Cr# (0.59–0.83) and intermediate Mg# (0.46–0.52) in spinel and experienced high degrees of total melt extraction (up to 25%). Abstract Potassium-rich lavas with K/Na of >2 are common in orogenic and anorogenic intraplate magmatic provinces. However, in the primitive mantle, the concentration of Na exceeds that of K by 10 times. The source of K-rich lavas thus needs to be either K-enriched or Na-depleted to account for high K/Na ratios. The geochemical and isotopic compositions of high 87Sr/86Sr post-collisional lavas show that their mantle source contains a recycled crustal component. The Pleistocene (~460–265 ka) San Venanzo volcanic complex belongs to the IAP (Intra-Apennine Province) in central Italy, which comprises at least four small Pleistocene monogenetic volcanoes plus several unrooted pyroclastic deposits with peculiar mineralogical and whole-rock chemical compositions. San Venanzo products are strongly SiO2-undersaturated, CaO- and MgO-rich and show ultrapotassic serial character. The relatively common occurrence of calcite in the pyroclastic rocks and the overall high CaO content are interpreted in literature as primary mineral. A new species of Capparis (Capparaceae) from ultramafic substrata in New Caledonia

A new species of Capparis, C. parvifolia, is described and illustrated from New Caledonia, where it is known from a few localities on Mont Kaala on ultramafic substrata. The new species is characterized by the relatively small, linear leaf-blade and by the small size of the sepals, petals, stamens, gynophore and fruit. Its affinities with related taxa are discussed and its conservation status assessed.

A revision of the genus Capparis has been carried out in New Caledonia, a global biodiversity hotspot with a high rate of endemism in its vascular flora. The taxonomic treatment of Capparis in this area required study because of some incompletely known taxa and deviating forms. Based on morphological and distributional investigations carried out on historical and recent herbarium collections, four species are recognised in New Caledonia: C. spinosa, belonging to sect. Runners in their forties dominate ultra-marathons from 50 to 3,100 miles

International audience; OBJECTIVES: This study investigated performance trends and the age of peak running speed in ultra-marathons from 50 to 3,100 miles. METHODS: The running speed and age of the fastest competitors in 50-, 100-, 200-, 1,000- and 3,100-mile events held worldwide from 1971 to 2012 were analyzed using single- and multi-level regression analyses. RESULTS: The number of events and competitors increased exponentially in 50- and 100-mile events. For the annual fastest runners, women improved in 50-mile events, but not men.
