Meaning of countertransference in a music therapy student's clinical studies - towards a professional perspective

2013

The concept of countertransference refers to the therapist's reactions to the client's inner world in therapy situation. Countertransference within therapy relationships can alternate from the therapist's obstructive reactions to positive experiences that may even guide the therapist towards purposeful interventions. In this research I study my own countertransference experience and my learning process of the meaning of countertransference. The methodology of the research is hermeneutic phenomenology and its structure follows the principles of the hermeneutic circle and of Gadamerian hermeneutic analysis. The data is composed of my self-reflections. I examine the self-reflections in the lig…

Nothing Left but the Core of Murmurs? : Attacks on Linking as Communication in Beckett’s The Unnamable

2022

Literary studies have usually interpreted Samuel Beckett’s The Unnamable (1959) to reflect an area void of meaning and inaccessible to representation. The present article, by contrast, argues that Beckett experientially communicates archaic psychic reality where certain contents develop in an interpersonal relationship. The article offers psychoanalytical close readings of a few key passages in the text, where the function that is integrated in the narrative voice and actively destroys connections manifests itself on different textual levels. Using the psychoanalyst Avner Bergstein’s interpretation of Wilfred Bion’s concept, “attacks on linking”, as a paradoxical form of communication, the …

The influence of English film media on the Finnish language : The role of English in Finnish film magazine Episodi (2008)

2009

Nykyään median vaikutus on suuri ympäri maailmaa; kuuntelemme radiota, luemme lehtiä, katselemme televisiota ja elokuvia. Mediaa onkin tutkittu paljon viime aikoina. Tutkimusta kaivattaisiinkin lisää analysoimaan, miten eri mediat vaikuttavat kieliin. Tässä tutkielmassani olen pyrkinyt analysoimaan, miten englannin kielen vaikutusvaltainen elokuvateollisuus on vaikuttanut suomalaist…

Traces of the past: an interview study with Finnish war children who did not return to Finland after the Second World War

2017

ABSTRACTThis paper is an in-depth qualitative study based on interviews with 10 Finnish children who were evacuated to Sweden during Second World War and who did not return to Finland after the war. The interviewees were asked to tell about their lives. Nine of them were between 2 and 5 years and one was 7 years old at the time of evacuation. The aim was to study how their childhood experiences were reflected in adult memories, how they remembered or did not remember. This paper focuses on the consequences of not knowing about one’s early life and also on whether it is possible to observe signs of the Finnish mother. She did not appear explicitly but could be sensed in the tendency of the i…

Chromatographic Efficiency in Micellar Liquid Chromatography: Should it Be Still a Topic of Concern?

2013

Micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) was first proposed as an attractive alternative to avoid the use of organic solvents. It was soon apparent that pure micellar solutions yield poor efficiencies. This problem was remediated by the addition of a small amount of an organic solvent. However, the general opinion of the poor peak shape has prevailed as a handicap for MLC, in spite of the fact that the hybrid mode often offers similar or even improved efficiencies (for basic compounds) relative to that attained in the hydro-organic mode. Only the efficiencies for apolar non-ionizable compounds are still clearly inferior. This work describes the type of interactions and polarity changes with org…

Hypothesis of individualism and equality? : cultural representations in American organizational media releases

2012

According to previous research, American cultural values are reflected in the external communication of organizations. This study aimed to explore how cultural features are reflected in a specific American organization’s, the Coca-cola Company’s, web based media releases and to hypothesize what kind of effects the discourses could have on the viewers’ perceptions of the world. In this cultural studies oriented research, the notion of cultural transference was adopted to explore the way texts can carry and represent cultural features, such as values, norms and behaviour models. In addition, effects research was adopted to reveal the texts’ potential effect on people’s worldviews. Specific re…

The universal ancestor : an unfinished reconstruction

2015

Countertransference responses mediate the relationship between patients' overall defense functioning and therapists' interventions.

2021

Objective: The aim of this work was to investigate the relationship between therapists' techniques (supportive/expressive intervention level - ESIL), therapists' countertransference (CT) and patients' defense level of functioning (ODF). We hypothesized that CT could play a mediating role in the relationship between patients' ODF and therapists' ESIL. Method: 65 psychotherapy sessions were rated by two different raters each with the Psychodynamic Interventions Rating Scale and the Defense Mechanisms Rating Scale. Clinicians used the Therapist Response Questionnaire to provide information on their CT. The 65 sessions referred to 65 clinicians (25 = females, 40 = males; 38 = psychodynamic, 27 …

Countertransference in Factitious Disorder

1994

In the treatment of patients with factitious disorder it is important to realize that at various levels of their experience these patients are more intimate with death than with life. This requires a particular awareness of resistance mechanisms to countertransference as well as of the importance of clinical procedures, in particular with regard to superego analysis. A requirement for establishing a psychotherapeutic alliance with patients suffering from factitious disorder is a high degree of 'therapeutic eros', hope and trust in one's own capabilities. The emphasis on a 'biophile attitude' does, however, involve the danger that the destructive potential, fantasies of death or killing, but…
