Introducing randomness in the analysis of chemical reactions: An analysis based on random differential equations and probability density functions

2021

[EN] In this work we consider a particular randomized kinetic model for reaction-deactivation of hydrogen peroxide decomposition. We apply the Random Variable Transformation technique to obtain the first probability density function of the solution stochastic process under general conditions. From the rst probability density function, we can obtain fundamental statistical information, such as the mean and the variance of the solution, at every instant time. The transformation considered in the application of the Random Variable Transformation technique is not unique. Then, the first probability density function can take different expressions, although essentially equivalent in terms of comp…

Solving fully randomized higher-order linear control differential equations: Application to study the dynamics of an oscillator

2021

[EN] In this work, we consider control problems represented by a linear differential equation assuming that all the coefficients are random variables and with an additive control that is a stochastic process. Specifically, we will work with controllable problems in which the initial condition and the final target are random variables. The probability density function of the solution and the control has been calculated. The theoretical results have been applied to study, from a probabilistic standpoint, a damped oscillator.

A Unifying Framework for Perturbative Exponential Factorizations

2021

We propose a framework where Fer and Wilcox expansions for the solution of differential equations are derived from two particular choices for the initial transformation that seeds the product expansion. In this scheme, intermediate expansions can also be envisaged. Recurrence formulas are developed. A new lower bound for the convergence of theWilcox expansion is provided, as well as some applications of the results. In particular, two examples are worked out up to a high order of approximation to illustrate the behavior of the Wilcox expansion.

The contribution of geographical certification programs to farm income and rural economies: The case of Pecorino Siciliano PDO

2021

This study attempts to measure the capacity of the EU geographical certification scheme to positively influence the price of certified products and the incomes of their producers. A comparison of the economic results of two cheese-producing dairy farm enterprises with different business strategies and locations within the Sicilian hinterlands is performed in order to determine the transformation value of each dairy’s sheep milk into pecorino cheese (with and without the Protected Designation of Origin, or PDO, certification) and the related joint products (ricotta). The economic convenience of the total transformation of sheep milk into Pecorino Siciliano PDO and ricotta is also appraised. …

Thermal equation of state of ruthenium characterized by resistively heated diamond anvil cell

2019

AbstractThe high-pressure and high-temperature structural and chemical stability of ruthenium has been investigated via synchrotron X-ray diffraction using a resistively heated diamond anvil cell. In the present experiment, ruthenium remains stable in the hcp phase up to 150 GPa and 960 K. The thermal equation of state has been determined based upon the data collected following four different isotherms. A quasi-hydrostatic equation of state at ambient temperature has also been characterized up to 150 GPa. The measured equation of state and structural parameters have been compared to the results of ab initio simulations performed with several exchange-correlation functionals. The agreement b…

Solidification of syndiotactic polystyrene by a continuous cooling transformation approach

2007

Syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) was solidified from the melt under drastic conditions according to a continuous cooling transformation methodology developed by the authors, which covered a cooling rate range spanning from approximately 0.03 to 3000 °C/s. The samples produced, structurally homogeneous across both their thickness and surface, were analyzed by macroscopic methods, such as density, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and microhardness (MH) measurements. The density was strictly related to the phase content, as confirmed by WAXD deconvolution. The peculiar behavior encountered (the density first decreasing and then increasing with the cooling rate) was attributed to the singular…

A study of KNbO3in the pressure range to 12 GPa using synchrotron radiation

1997

Abstract Orthorhombic KNbO3 has been studied by x-ray diffraction as a function of pressure. The lattice cell parameters, volume and stability range of this phase have been determined as a function of the applied pressure. No structural transformation has been observed up to 12 GPa. The resulting P-V data are fitted to a Murnaghan equation state of first-order.

The continuous cooling transformation (CCT) as a flexible tool to investigate polymer crystallization under processing conditions

2009

An experimental route for investigating polymer crystallization over a wide range of cooling rates (from 0.01 to 1000◦C/s) and pressures (from 0.1 to 40 MPa) is illustrated, using a method that recalls the approach adopted in metallurgy for studying structure development in metals. Two types of experimental setup were used, namely an apparatus for fast cooling of thin films (100–200 μm thick) at various cooling rates under atmospheric pressure and a device (based on a on-purpose modified injection molding machine) for quenching massive samples (about 1–2 cm3) under hydrostatic pressure fields. In both cases, ex situ characterization experiments were carried out to probe the resulting struct…

Structure and superconducting properties of YBa2(Cu1−x Fex)3O7

1988

Fe-substituted Y-Ba-Cu superconducting oxide compounds were investigated by dc-magnetic susceptibility measurements, powder X-ray diffraction and Mdssbauer spectroscopy. Fe substitution caused a structural transformation from orthorhombic to tetragonal. Up to 4 at% Fe Tc was almost unaffected. It was found that superconductivity in Cu oxides does not depend on orthorhombic crystal symmetry.

Structural study of α-Bi2O3 under pressure

2013

An experimental and theoretical study of the structural properties of monoclinic bismuth oxide (alpha-(BiO3)-O-2) under high pressures is here reported. Both synthetic and mineral bismite powder samples have been compressed up to 45 GPa and their equations of state have been determined with angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements. Experimental results have been also compared with theoretical calculations which suggest the possibility of several phase transitions below 10 GPa. However, experiments reveal only a pressure-induced amorphization between 15 and 25 GPa, depending on sample quality and deviatoric stresses. The amorphous phase has been followed up to 45 GPa and its nature di…
