High-Dose ϵ-Aminocaproic Acid Versus Aprotinin: Antifibrinolytic Efficacy in First-Time Coronary Operations
1998
The antifibrinolytic efficacy of a high-dose regimen of epsilon-aminocaproic acid (epsilon-ACA) was compared with aprotinin in first-time coronary operations. In a prospective, double-blinded, randomized study, 20 patients received high-dose epsilon-ACA (10 g both as a loading and cardiopulmonary bypass priming dose, 2.5 g/h until 4 hours after protamine), and another 20 patients received aprotinin (2 x 10(6) KIU [280 mg] for loading and priming, 0.5 x 10(6) KIU/h [70 mg/h]). Ten untreated patients served as controls. Both agents reduced postoperative levels of thrombin/antithrombin III complexes, D-dimers, fibrin degradation products, free plasma hemoglobin (epsilon-ACA versus aprotinin, p =…
Efficacy of TachoSil patches in controlling Dacron suture-hole bleeding after abdominal aortic aneurysm open repair
2009
Abstract Purpose The aim of this study is evaluate the efficacy of TachoSil® patches in controlling suture-hole bleeding after elective infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) replacement with Dacron graft. Materials and methods Patients undergoing elective replacement of infrarenal AAA with Dacron grafts were prospectively randomized to TachoSil® patches (Group I) or standard compression with surgical swabs (Group II). We evaluated time to haemostasis, blood loss during the operation, blood loss after cross-clamp removal, duration of operation, drain volume, requirement for blood transfusion and surgeons rating of efficacy. Results Twenty patients were randomized (10 patients in each tr…
Evolving Risk Factors for Mortality after Lung Transplantation over the Last 10 Years: Insights from a Single-Centre Database
2016
s S233 218 (82%) patients received pooled platelet transfusion -median (IQR) 1(1-2) U. 209 (79%) and 129 (49%) patients received fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and cryoprecipitate with a median (IQR) of 3(2-4) and 0(0-0) U respectively. Conclusion: Rate and volume of transfusion of blood products compare favourably with centres performing surgery off CPB or on ECMO. Requirement for ECMO particularly for BTT, but also PGD is associated with high transfusion requirements.

BACKGROUND Postoperative air leaks are a common complication after lung surgery. They are associated with prolonged hospital stay, increased postoperative pain and treatment costs. The treatment of prolonged air leaks remains controversial. Several treatments have been proposed including different types of sealants, chemical pleurodesis, or early surgical intervention. The aim of this review was to analyze the impact of autologous blood pleurodesis in a systematic way. METHODS A systematic review of the literature was conducted until July 2020. Studies with more than five adult patients undergoing lung resections were included. Studies in patients receiving blood pleurodesis for pneumothora…
ATR-FTIR spectroscopy as a quality control system for monitoring the storage of blood products
2021
Blood screening is a fundamental part of disease diagnosis and monitoring health. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy offers an innovative solution to streamlining the process, especially for multianalyte detection in aqueous samples. However, samples always undergo a storage phase before they are processed for testing and blood transfusion. In this study, we investigated the effect of standard storage procedures on the macromolecular composition of whole blood, and plasma collected in blood tubes for diagnostic purposes and initial screening of blood products. Periphery blood samples were collected from 10 volunteers and then stored for 14 days a…
Peri-operative red blood cell transfusion in neonates and infants: NEonate and Children audiT of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe: A prospective Europe…
2022
BACKGROUND Little is known about current clinical practice concerning peri-operative red blood cell transfusion in neonates and small infants. Guidelines suggest transfusions based on haemoglobin thresholds ranging from 8.5 to 12gdl-1, distinguishing between children from birth to day 7 (week 1), from day 8 to day 14 (week 2) or from day 15 (week 3) onwards. OBJECTIVE To observe peri-operative red blood cell transfusion practice according to guidelines in relation to patient outcome. DESIGN A multicentre observational study. SETTING The NEonate-Children sTudy of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe (NECTARINE) trial recruited patients up to 60 weeks' postmenstrual age undergoing anaesthe…
Advantages and limitations of using national administrative data on obstetric blood transfusions to estimate the frequency of obstetric hemorrhages
2013
International audience; BACKGROUND: Obstetric hemorrhages are a frequent cause of maternal death all over the world, but are not routinely monitored. Health systems administrative databases could be used for this purpose, but data quality needs to be assessed. OBJECTIVES: Using blood transfusion data recorded in administrative databases to estimate the frequency of obstetric hemorrhages. Research design A population-based study. Subjects Validation sub-sample: all mothers who gave birth in a French region in 2006-07 (35 123 pregnancies). Main study: all mothers who gave birth in France in 2006-07 (1 629 537 pregnancies). METHOD: Linkage and comparison of administrative data on blood transfu…

Comparative Study of the Initial Experience in Performing Robotic and Laparoscopic Right Hepatectomy with Technical Description of the Robotic Techni…
2017
Background: Despite potential benefits of robotic liver surgery, it is still considered a “development in progress” technique. Methods: The outcomes of 14 patients undergoing robotic right hepatectomy were analyzed and compared with the results of 20 laparoscopic right hepatectomies consecutively performed by the same young surgeon. Results: The overall mean operative time was less in robotic arm (425 ± 139 vs. 565.18 ± 183.73, p = 0.022) and the estimated blood loss was similar (335.15 ± 139.8 vs. 423.95 ± 205.15, p = 0.17); no blood transf…
