Two series of palladium-based catalysts were compared on the basis of the adsorption of CO and CO2, monitored by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The first series is represented by a silica-supported palladium catalyst and by some catalysts derived from it by addition of different amounts of sodium ion, 0 ≤ R ≤ 25.6, whereRis the atomic ratio Na/Pd. The second series consists of palladium catalysts supported on “model” and natural pumices. Preparation of multi-nanocrystalline transition metal oxide (TiO2–NiTiO3) mesoporous thin films

Ordered mesoporous TiO2–NiTiO3 thin films, with nickel content x < 0.5, were prepared by dip-coating an acidic solution of hydrolysed transition metal chlorides in controlled humidity, followed by a very careful annealing treatment. These latter treatments were studied by in situ SAXS-WAXS experiments involving synchrotron radiation and TEM analysis. They revealed that the walls can be composed of amorphous, single crystalline or multi crystalline nanoparticles depending on x and the conditions applied during the thermal treatment.

Abstract Iron (II), cobalt (II) and nickel (II) complexes of 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine (bpp) with [Cr(C2O4)3]3− have been prepared. They were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility measurements and thermal gravimetric analyses. All three compounds are isostructural and they are formed by isolated [MII(bpp)2]2+ and [Cr(C2O4)3]3− complexes and free ClO4 −. As expected, only the salt [Fe(bpp)2]2[Cr(C2O4)3]ClO4·5H2O shows a thermal spin transition with transition temperature (T1/2) around 375 K that is correlated to the loss of water molecules.

Abstract Nanometric spinel oxide powders, Fe 3− x M x O 4 , where M is a transition element, have been synthetized by soft chemistry. This method generally leads to a non-stoichiometric phase, Fe 3− x M x O 4+δ where δ is the deviation from stoichiometry so that further annealing at low temperatures around 450°C and low oxygen partial pressure around 10 −25 Pa given by N 2 /H 2 /H 2 O gas mixtures is required: this enables a stoichiometric compound to be obtained and a nanometric size to be maintained. Abstract Electrodeposition of copper from Cu/MOF immersed into acetate buffer produces a quasi-periodic series of 10–20 nm sized laminae sandwiched within the pristine MOF lattice as monitored by voltammetry of microparticles/atomic force microscopy. This anisotropic patterning can be qualitatively described in terms of a highly orientation-dependent diffusion of electrons and charge-balancing electrolyte counterions in the MOF network.

ABSTRACT: Most low water content or frozen food products are partly or fully amorphous. This review will discuss the extent to which it is possible to understand and predict their behavior during processing and storage, on the basis of glass transition temperature values (Tg) and phenomena related to glass transition. Two main conclusions are provisionally proposed. Firstly, glass transition cannot be considered as an absolute threshold for molecular mobility. Transport of water and other small molecules takes place even in the glassy state at a significant rate, resulting in effective exchange of water in multi-domains foods or sensitivity to oxidation of encapsulated materials. Accurate determination of the spin Hamiltonian parameters in transition-metal complexes with large zero-field splitting (ZFS) is an actual challenge in studying magnetic and spectroscopic properties of high-spin transition metal complexes. Recent critical papers have convincingly shown that previous determinations of these parameters, based only on the magnetic data, have low accuracy and reliability. A combination of X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry seems to be a more convincing and accurate approach. Inside out approach: Twofold deprotonation of benzene by a sodium monoalkyl bisamido manganate(II) reagent derived from BuNa, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine, and Mn(CH2SiMe3)2 has produced the first inverse-crown complex in which the transition-metal atoms are incorporated in the host (see X-ray structure, blue N, green Na, purple Mn). Variable-temperature magnetization measurements show that the complex is antiferromagnetic.
Non-exponential relaxation in disordered materials: Phenomenological correlations and spectrally selective experiments

Abstract In most glass-forming materials external perturbations are relaxed in a non-exponential fashion. It is shown that the degree of non-exponentiality is phenomenologically correlated with the departure from simple thermally activated behavior as measured by the fragility index m. In model glass formers such as the Ge-As-Se ternary alloy, and to some degree for amorphous materials in general, the correlations with these properties are observed also for other characteristic features. These include the specific heat step and the aging kinetics in the glass transformation range.
