Stochastic collision model approach to transport phenomena in quantum networks

2021

Abstract Noise-assisted transport phenomena highlight the nontrivial interplay between environmental effects and quantum coherence in achieving maximal efficiency. Due to the complexity of biochemical systems and their environments, effective open quantum system models capable of providing physical insights on the presence and role of quantum effects are highly needed. In this paper, we introduce a new approach that combines an effective quantum microscopic description with a classical stochastic one. Our stochastic collision model (SCM) describes both Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics without relying on the weak coupling assumption. We investigate the consequences of spatial and tempora…

Quantum graphs with mixed dynamics: the transport/diffusion case

2013

We introduce a class of partial differential equations on metric graphs associated with mixed evolution: on some edges we consider diffusion processes, on other ones transport phenomena. This yields a system of equations with possibly nonlocal couplings at the boundary. We provide sufficient conditions for these to be governed by a contractive semigroup on a Hilbert space naturally associated with the system. We show that our setting is also adequate to discuss specific systems of diffusion equations with boundary delays.

Thermal, electric and spin transport in superconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator structures

2019

A ferromagnetic insulator (FI) attached to a conventional superconductor (S) changes drastically the properties of the latter. Specifically, the exchange field at the FI/S interface leads to a splitting of the superconducting density of states. If S is a superconducting film, thinner than the superconducting coherence length, the modification of the density of states occurs over the whole sample. The co-existence of the exchange splitting and superconducting correlations in S/FI structures leads to striking transport phenomena that are of interest for applications in thermoelectricity, superconducting spintronics and radiation sensors. Here we review the most recent progress in understandin…

Electronic and Thermal Sequential Transport in Metallic and Superconducting Two-Junction Arrays

2010

The description of transport phenomena in devices consisting of arrays of tunnel junctions, and the experimental confirmation of these predictions is one of the great successes of mesoscopic physics. The aim of this paper is to give a self-consistent review of sequential transport processes in such devices, based on the so-called “orthodox” model. We calculate numerically the current-voltage (I–V) curves, the conductance versus bias voltage (G–V) curves, and the associated thermal transport in symmetric and asymmetric two-junction arrays such as Coulomb-blockade thermometers (CBTs), superconducting-insulator-normal-insulator-superconducting (SINIS) structures, and superconducting single-ele…

Atomistic Simulation of Transport Phenomena in Simple and Complex Fluids and Fluid Mixtures

2003

Computer simulations of fluids in thermal equilibrium can yield information on transport coefficients such as self—diffusion and interdiffusion coefficients, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. While the estimation of self—diffusion coefficients from the mean square displacements of the respective particles is rather straightforward, the estimation of other transport coefficients is less straightforward, and can be based on either an analysis of time correlation functions of the appropriate collective variables, or on nonequilibrium techniques where the linear response to appropriate perturbations is measured.

Numerical study of the accuracy of temperature measurement by thermocouples in small-scale reactors

2018

Proper temperature measurement is imperative in any laboratory study if reliable data are to be obtained, particularly in the field of chemical kinetics. In this paper we analyze in silico some typical thermowell configurations used in small-scale reactors by coupling computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with conjugated heat transfer phenomena. This allows us to identify deviations in measurements arising from thermal radiation and self-conductivity in mid and high temperature ranges, in addition to radial temperature gradients. A novel design is proposed and optimized by additional simulation, showing potential for faster and more accurate temperature measurements.

Membrane Deformation and Its Effects on Flow and Mass Transfer in the Electromembrane Processes

2019

In the membrane processes, a trans-membrane pressure (TMP) may arise due to design features or operating conditions. In most applications, stacks for electrodialysis (ED) or reverse electrodialysis (RED) operate at low TMP (&lt

Characteristics of the polymer transport in ratchet systems

2010

Molecules with complex internal structure in time-dependent periodic potentials are studied by using short Rubinstein-Duke model polymers as an example. We extend our earlier work on transport in stochastically varying potentials to cover also deterministic potential switching mechanisms, energetic efficiency and non-uniform charge distributions. We also use currents in the non-equilibrium steady state to identify the dominating mechanisms that lead to polymer transportation and analyze the evolution of the macroscopic state (e.g., total and head-to-head lengths) of the polymers. Several numerical methods are used to solve the master equations and nonlinear optimization problems. The domina…

Ionic transport characteristics of negatively and positively charged conical nanopores in 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 2:2, 1:2, and 1:3 electrolytes

2019

We study experimentally the current (I)-voltage (V) curves of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 2:2, 1:2, and 1:3 electrolytes in positively and negatively charged conically-shaped pores of nanoscale dimensions. The positive charges are poly(allylamine hydrochloride) chains functionalized on the pore surface by electrostatic interactions while the negative charges are carboxylic acid groups. Under physiological conditions, these fixed-charge groups are ionized and strongly interact with the different monovalent, divalent, and trivalent ions in the pore solution. The current rectification of the I-V curves and the membrane potentials provide fundamental information on the interaction of the pore charge groups …

Emergent ultrafast phenomena in correlated oxides and heterostructures

2017

The possibility of investigating the dynamics of solids on timescales faster than the thermalization of the internal degrees of freedom has disclosed novel non-equilibrium phenomena that have no counterpart at equilibrium. Transition metal oxides (TMOs) provide an interesting playground in which the correlations among the charges in the metal $d$-orbitals give rise to a wealth of intriguing electronic and thermodynamic properties involving the spin, charge, lattice and orbital orders. Furthermore, the physical properties of TMOs can be engineered at the atomic level, thus providing the platform to investigate the transport phenomena on timescales of the order of the intrinsic decoherence ti…
