Alzheimer’s disease and infections, where we stand and where we go
2014
Editorial Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurological disorder, which represents the most common form of dementia, one of the major causes of disability in later life. Age is the greatest risk factor for AD, which typically affects people aged 65 years and over, with an age-standardised prevalence of 4.4 [1]. However, AD is not a normal part of ageing and advanced age alone does not justify the disease. Several pathways have been implicated in AD pathophysiology, the most described is the neurodegenerative one, which lead to the brain accumulation of beta-amyloid and neurofibrillary tangles, aggregations of hyperphosphorylated tau protein, macroscopically resulting in brain atrop…
Akūtas nieru mazspējas riska faktoru analīze smagas termiskas traumas slimniekiem
2022
2020

The Relationships between Early Trauma, Dissociation, and Alexithymia in Alcohol Addiction
2014
Objective Addiction is often considered a dissociative behavior that is related to alexithymia and developmental trauma. The study aims were to explore the relationships between early trauma, alexithymia, and dissociation. Methods A total of 117 (males=60; females=57) alcohol-addicted individuals and 117 healthy individuals (males=60; females=57) were administered a series of self-report questionnaires that assess traumatic experiences, alexithymia, and pathological dissociation. Results Correlation analyses indicated significant correlations between alexithymia, dissociation, and trauma and a significant difference between the target and control groups, with higher alexithymia and dissocia…
PHARMACOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT OF THE POLYTRAUMA PATIENT. ON ANALGESIC THERAPY GUIDELINES
2022
In consideration of the constant, if not increasing number of polytrauma patients arriving in emergency rooms, the pharmacological treatment of pain is a topic that is always under observation and innovation. Even more important is the global management of pain in the polytrauma patient, i.e. its treatment in the phases even after hospitalisation. The existence of pharmacotherapeutic protocols is today an aid for the physician in order to act in the most appropriate way in the shortest possible time. This brief commentary is intended to be a practical guide to the analgesic treatment of the polytrauma patient, in the light of the most recent scientific evidence.
Sāpju un traumu nozīme un pieredze profesionālu dejotāju karjerā
2015
The relationship between cortisol and cognitive function in healthy older people: The moderating role of Apolipoprotein E polymorphism.
2018
The Apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE-epsilon 4) allele has been suggested as the main risk factor for late onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), whereas the ApoE-epsilon 2 allele has been proposed as a protective factor. These proposals have increased the interest in the effect of the ApoE genotype in healthy people. Additionally, high cortisol levels have been related to negative effects on cognition. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between cognitive performance and cortisol, taking into account the different ApoE alleles. For this reason, the aim of this study was to evaluate different cognitive domains (declarative and working memory, attention, and executive function) and their…
Effektivitt prklinischer Notfallversorgung Fiktion oder Fakt?
1996
The current increase in the cost of health care must be considered as a severe threat to the prehospital emergency services system. Two examples have been selected--the patient with polytrauma and the patient in cardiac arrest--to demonstrate the dilemma between a need for objective data and the requirements of emergency patients. Study results obtained in trauma patients indicating that total prehospital time, including scene time, is correlated to patient outcome have led to the conclusion that at the scene treatment by emergency physicians may be dispensable. It has, however also been demonstrated that the time required for medical treatment at the scene is equivalent to 20% of the total…
Palatal atypical histiocytic granuloma
2009
In this report, we examine a clinical entity called atypical histiocytic granuloma (AHG), which is characterized by ulceroproliferative lesions that clinically simulate a squamous cell carcinoma or specific granulomatous lesions. AHG histologically shows a histiocytic proliferation and is characterized by specific mitotic activity, which has the potential to be confused with malignant processes of a lymphoid origin. There are few cases reported in the literature, and an adequateknowledge of the process is required in order to avoid a misdiagnosis, especially as regards malignant processes. To our knowledge, a case of this type of lesion in the palate has not yet been described. We present a…
