Several prognostic systems have been elaborated for patients with Hodgkin disease (HD) over the last 12 years, but early identification of a reasonably large group of both low and high risk, advanced stage patients remains unsatisfactory.Seven well known models were applied to 516 patients with advanced HD, with 315 patients used for the study sample and 201 patients used for the test sample. The present phase II study was undertaken to assess antitumoral activity, safety and tolerability of recombinant human interleukin-6 (rh IL-6) in patients with advanced renal cell cancer. Rh IL-6 was administered as a daily subcutaneous injection at a fixed dose of 150 micrograms/day for a maximum of 42 consecutive days. 12 patients with metastatic renal cell cancer without previous immunotherapy were enrolled and were evaluated for response. No objective clinical responses were observed in the trial. Toxicity was moderate and reversible and mainly comprised fever, influenza-like symptoms, fatigue and moderate hepatotoxicity. Forty-two patients with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) were accepted into a multicenter prospective study in 1983 to 1990, treated with alfa-IFN 3 MU/m 2 3 times a week and then followed-up until August 1, 2003. All the patients who had disease progression with pulmonary spread were characterized by insufficient response to IFN-therapy and detection of HPV type 11. BACKGROUND The authors investigated the clinical role of tumor burden (TB) in patients with Hodgkin lymphoma, relating this parameter to most of the current clinical and prognostic factors and to the best predictive multifactorial models. METHODS The volume of TB at diagnosis was measured directly from the initial staging computed tomography scans in 351 patients who were treated on standard protocols. To evaluate the presence of HIV-1 non-B subtypes in Sicily, we sequenced and genotyped HIV-1 PR and RT regions of the pol gene using plasma from 169 HIV-1-infected adult patients. All samples were obtained from a study of antiretroviral-associated resistance mutations resulting in virological failure during highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Eight (4.7%) patients had the non-B HIV-1 subtype including some circulating recombinant forms (CRFs). All of these individuals acquired the infection by heterosexual transmission.
