Evaluation of the postural stability of elderly persons using time domain signal analysis
2012
A force platform is widely used in the evaluation of postural stability in man. Although an abundance of parameters are typically retrieved from force platform data, no uniform analysis of the data has been carried out. In general, the signal analysis does not analyze the underlying postural event, i.e., whether the signal consists of several small corrections or large excursions. In the present work, we studied the postural stability of 4589 elderly persons from Iceland on a force platform under visual and non-visual conditions during stance on a solid surface. We analyzed the internal relationship between frequently used time domain variables. In addition, we conducted a factor analysis u…
Reply to “Caution in underrepresentation of older adults in clinical trials on COVID-19 vaccines”
2021
We would like to thank Chen et al. for their comments on our recently published paper in Ageing Research Reviews (Veronese et al., 2021). In this reply we would like to answer to the points raised in their letter. Regarding the first question, we decided to run our search only in PubMed/Medline and ClinicalTrials.gov since the phase II-III randomized controlled trials of SARS-CoV 2 vaccines, considering the urgency for interventions to ameliorate the pandemic situation, received a great deal of interest. Therefore, they were usually published in high impact factor journals, reported in PubMed, and their protocols were usually reported in clinicaltrials.gov. However, following the suggestion…
Changes in Postural Balance in Frail Elderly Women during a 4-Week Visual Feedback Training: A Randomized Controlled Trial
2002
Background: Balance training programs have not shown consistent results among older adults, and it remains unclear how different training methods can be adapted to frail elderly people. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 4-week visual feedback-based balance training on the postural control of frail elderly women living in residential care homes. Methods: Elderly women of two residential care facilities were randomized to an exercise group (EG, n = 20) and to a control group (CG, n = 7). The EG participated in training sessions three times/week for 4 weeks. The exercises were carried out with a com…

Combined resistance and balance-jumping exercise reduces older women's injurious falls and fractures: 5-year follow-up study
2014
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: previously, a randomised controlled exercise intervention study (RCT) showed that combined resistance and balance-jumping training (COMB) improved physical functioning and bone strength. The purpose of this follow-up study was to assess whether this exercise intervention had long-lasting effects in reducing injurious falls and fractures. DESIGN: five-year health-care register-based follow-up study after a 1-year, four-arm RCT. SETTING: community-dwelling older women in Finland. SUBJECTS: one hundred and forty-five of the original 149 RCT participants; women aged 70-78 years at the beginning. METHODS: participants' health-care visits were collected from computerised…
Anthropometric Variables as Mediators of the Association of Changes in Diet and Physical Activity With Inflammatory Profile
2020
AbstractBackgroundMechanisms underlying the associations of high levels of physical activity (PA) and adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) with a better inflammatory profile remain unclear. Our objective was to assess the mediating role of changes in body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), as markers of body fat in the association of changes in PA and adherence to the MedDiet, with changes in the inflammatory profile.MethodThis study included 489 adults, aged 55–75 years, from the PREDIMED-Plus multicenter lifestyle intervention trial. An inflammatory score was calculated, based on 8 blood biomarkers: high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin 6, interleukin 8, in…
Effects of Nrf2 deficiency on bone microarchitecture in an experimental model of osteoporosis
2014
Objective. Redox imbalance contributes to bone fragility. We have evaluated the in vivo role of nuclear factor erythroid derived 2-related factor-2 (Nrf2), an important regulator of cellular responses to oxidative stress, in bone metabolism using a model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Methods. Ovariectomy was performed in both wild-type and mice deficient in Nrf2 (Nrf2-/-). Bone microarchitecture was analyzed by CT. Serum markers of bone metabolism were also measured. Reactive oxygen species production was determined using dihydrorhodamine 123. Results. Sham-operated or ovariectomized Nrf2 -/- mice exhibit a loss in trabecular bone mineral density in femur, accompanied by a reduction in co…

Context: Foot ulcer is the principal cause of hospitalization for patients with diabetes. Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), an adenosine A2A receptor agonist, improves wound healing in diabetic mice. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of PDRN on chronic ulcer healing in patients with diabetes. Design and Setting: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, involved two medical centers in Italy. Intervention: Patients with diabetes showing hard-to-heal ulcers (Wagner grade 1 or 2) were randomly assigned to receive placebo (n = 106) or PDRN (n = 110). The treatments (PDRN and placebo) were performed 3 days a week for 8 weeks by intramuscular and perilesiona…
Computational Analysis of the Active Control of Incompressible Airfoil Flutter Vibration Using a Piezoelectric V-Stack Actuator
2021
The flutter phenomenon is a potentially destructive aeroelastic vibration studied for the design of aircraft structures as it limits the flight envelope of the aircraft. The aim of this work is to propose a heuristic design of a piezoelectric actuator-based controller for flutter vibration suppression in order to extend the allowable speed range of the structure. Based on the numerical model of a three degrees of freedom (3DOF) airfoil and taking into account the FEM model of a V-stack piezoelectric actuator, a filtered PID controller is tuned using the population decline swarm optimizer PDSO algorithm, and gain scheduling (GS) of the controller parameters is used to make the control adapti…
