Guérir les blessures de l'Afrique du Sud

2009

On the eve of the democratic elections scheduled in South Africa in 2009, this collection of essays analyses the many ways in which South Africans have been trying to heal the wounds of apartheid, as advocated in Nelson Mandela’s famous 1994 speech, delivered at the dawn of the ‘ new ’ South Africa. The articles encompass such diverse fields as politics, literature, cinema, welfare policies or education, and they all seek to explore the sea change which totally reshaped South African identity in the last fifteen years that followed the demise of apartheid. The notion of ‘ healing the wounds’ is used both as a pretext and as a focal point to build up as complete a picture as possible of Sout…

Employing fuzzy logic in the diagnosis of a clinical case

2010

Fuzzy logic is a logical calculus which operates with many truth values (while classical logic works with the two values of true and false). Since fuzzy logic considers the truth of scientific statements like something softened, it is fruitfully applied to the study of biological phenomena, biology is indeed considered the field of complexity, uncertainty and vagueness. In this paper fuzzy logic is successfully applied to the clinical diagnosis of a patient who suffers from different diseases bound by a complex causal chain. In this work it is presented a mathematical foundation of fuzzy logic (with connectives and inference rules) and then the application of fuzzy reasoning to the study of…

On Language Adequacy

2015

Abstract The paper concentrates on the problem of adequate reflection of fragments of reality via expressions of language and inter-subjective knowledge about these fragments, called here, in brief, language adequacy. This problem is formulated in several aspects, the most general one being: the compatibility of the language syntax with its bi-level semantics: intensional and extensional. In this paper, various aspects of language adequacy find their logical explication on the ground of the formal-logical theory of syntax T of any categorial language L generated by the so-called classical categorial grammar, and also on the ground of its extension to the bi-level, intensional and ex- tensio…

Truth Demystified

2015

For further development, see Karlis Podnieks in ResearchGate. How could we recognize truth, if we only have models, means of model-building, and the history of their evolution? Where is the truth in the cloud of models – with so many of them already gone with the wind? We can define truths as more or less persistent invariants of successful evolution of models and means of model-building. What is true, will not change in the future (for some time, at least). This approach to truth could be named demystified realism (or, demystified theory of truth) – the kind of realism based on a minimum of metaphysical assumptions. (“Robotic realism” also would be appropriate, but the term is occupied alr…

Problem prawdy w komunikacji z pacjentem o złym rokowaniu. Punkt widzenia bioetyka i teologa

2016

The patient, who is very ill, is confronted with overwhelming diagnosis for their state of health at a certain point of life. It would seem that “the problem of truth” raised in this context concerns the problem whether to pass the information about a negative prognosis or not. It turns out, however, that the point is more about realizing the truth together and communicating on the basis of the truth. The information, which is to reach the terminal patient, is not supposed to kill him or her after all, but to encourage him or her to fiht for his or her life. What are the ways of the mobilization and what is the role of truth in this situation? – that is the essence of the eponymous issue. I…

Demokratia, relativismi ja totuuden jälkeinen aika

2020

Viral Tweets, Fake News and Social Bots in Post-Factual Politics

2018

•PurposeIn the wake of Brexit and the 2016 US Presidential Elections, “post-factual” society has been heralded as a new era of political communications, where the digital public sphere plays a central role, in spreading “viral” contents and “fake news”, with the help of automated accounts or “social bots”. This paper seeks to define these terms and the methods by which the phenomena they commonly designate might be studied, in order to characterise the dynamics of political deliberation during the 2017 French Presidential Elections on Twitter, the online platform most commonly used for political communication in France. It thus aims to better understand the mechanisms by which information b…

Heideggerin aukeama : tutkimuksia totuudesta ja taiteesta Martin Heideggerin avaamassa horisontissa

2001

This study is a philosophical work on Martin Heidegger's thinking. Its primary purpose is to study Heideggerian concepts. Secondly, it brings into focus two other thinkers who play with Heidegger 's thought, and thirdly, it applies Heideggerian thinking to truth and art. The study is compilation of eight articles, which are divided under three titles: I Heidegger and the Truth. II Heidegger and Truth in the Horizon of Nietzsche and Foucault, III Art in the Heideggerian Light. The main themes in this study are truth and art. The first part of the study is comprised of research work on Heid egger's theory and the concept of truth, which he present in his main work Sein und Zeit. Another impor…

Dealing with a Trauma Burdened Past: between Remembering and Forgetting

2017

Recognition that societies will not be able to build a future as long as they do not face the ‘demons of the past’ has become a kind of universal truth over the last decades of the 20th Century (Gibney et al., 2008, p. 1). This view, though challenging and ambiguous, is reflected in the globally present attempts to improve or rebuild relations within and between different communities at the domestic and international level. The question concerning, on the one hand, the essence and most essential elements and, on the other hand, the instruments and the limitations of rebuilding relations, as well as the political implications of those processes have become the broad area of interest and the …
