Parents' causal attributions concerning their children's academic achievement
2007
Katja Natale seurasi väitöstutkimuksessaan vanhempien lastensa koulumenestystä koskevien kausaaliattribuutioiden eli syyselitysten muotoutumista lasten siirtyessä esikoulusta kouluun. Hän tutki kuinka tärkeinä vanhemmat pitivät kykyä, yrityksen määrää, tehtävien vaikeustasoa ja lapsen saamaa ohjausta selittämässä lasten onnistumista ja epäonnistumista koulussa. - Koulunsa aloittavien lasten vanhempia voisi neuvoa viestimään lapsilleen, että heillä on kykyjä onnistua haastavissakin koulutehtävissä. Tällainen viesti vaikuttaa positiivisesti lasten koulutaitojen kehitykseen ja minäkuvan muuttumiseen realistisemmaksi, Natale suosittaa.Onnistuminen kyvykkyyttä, epäonnistuminen yrityksen puutetta…

User session level diverse reranking of search results
2018
Most Web search diversity approaches can be categorized as Document Level Diversification (DocLD), Topic Level Diversification (TopicLD) or Term Level Diversification (TermLD). DocLD selects the relevant documents with minimal content overlap to each other. It does not take the coverage of query subtopics into account. TopicLD solves this by modeling query subtopics explicitly. However, the automatic mining of query subtopics is difficult. TermLD tries to cover as many query topic terms as possible, which reduces the task of finding a query's subtopics into finding a set of representative topic terms. In this paper, we propose a novel User Session Level Diversification (UserLD) approach bas…
Suomalaisten talousosaaminen : kunnossa vai retuperällä?
2020
Julkisuudessa on vuosien varrella arvosteltu suomalaisten ja etenkin nuorten talousosaamista ja taloudellista lukutaitoa. Heikon osaamisen on katsottu aiheuttavan ylivelkaantumista ja muita ongelmia. Syitä tilanteeseen on etsitty erityisesti koulutusjärjestelmästä, jonka ei katsota antavan riittäviä eväitä talousasioiden ymmärtämiseen ja hoitamiseen. Tässä artikkelissa pyrimme tuomaan esille tutkimuksissa havaittua tietoa etenkin suomalaisten nuorten talousosaamisesta. Tulostemme perusteella huoli on jonkin verran liioiteltu. nonPeerReviewed
Korkean vireystason hetket hyvän ja huonon hoitotuloksen pariterapiaprosesseissa
2017
Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli tutkia Relationaalinen mieli monitoimijaisten terapiadialogien muutoshetkissä -projektin pariterapioiden tuloksellisuutta sekä pariterapian tuloksellisuuteen vaikuttavia tekijöitä hyvän ja huonon hoitotuloksen pariterapiatapauksissa. Tuloksellisuustutkimuksen perusteella valitsimme yhden hyvän ja yhden huonon hoitotuloksen pariterapiatapaukset. Tutkimuksen aineistona olivat projektiin osallistuneiden pariterapia-asiakkaiden täyttämät Outcome Ratings Scale (ORS)- lomakkeet, Jyväskylän yliopiston tutkimus- ja opetusklinikalla videoidut neljä pariterapiaistuntoa ja terapiaistuntojen ajalta asiakkaiden ihon sähkönjohtavuuden mittaukset. Projektiin osallistuneiden p…
DEBATE: Do interventions based on behavioral theory work in the real world?
2019
Background: Behavioral scientists suggest that for behavior change interventions to work effectively, and deliver population-level health outcomes, they must be underpinned by behavioral theory. However, despite implementation of such interventions, population levels of both health outcomes and linked behaviors have remained relatively static. We debate the extent to which interventions based on behavioral theory work in the real world to address population health outcomes. Discussion: Hagger argues there is substantive evidence supporting the efficacy and effectiveness of interventions based on behavioral theory in promoting population-level health behavior change in the ‘real world’. Musical interaction in music therapy for depression treatment
2022
Music therapy is efficacious for the treatment of depression. Compared to other psychotherapeutic forms, it allows for the emergence of various modes of mutual interaction, thus enabling multiple channels for emotional expression and fostering therapeutic alliance. Although musical interaction patterns between client and therapist have been regarded as predictors of therapeutic outcome in depression, this has not yet been systematically investigated. We aim to address this gap by analyzing the possible linkage between musical interaction features and changes in depression score. In a clinical trial, digital piano improvisations from 58 Finnish clients and their therapists were recorded ove…
Exploring Gameful Motivation of Autonomous Learners
2022
In this explorative study, we investigated motives of autonomous learners to participate in an online course, and how these motives are related to gameplay motivations, engagement in the course experience, and learning outcomes. The guiding premise for the study has been the idea that learning and game playing carry phenomenal similarities that could be revealed by scrutinizing motives for participating in a massive open online course that does not involve any intentionally game-like features. The research was conducted by analyzing survey data (N = 705) collected from individuals who had voluntarily participated in an open online course about artificial intelligence and its societal impact…
Silent Reading and Aural Models in Pianists’ Mental Practice
2016
This study addresses musicians’ learning outcomes and subjective experiences in two common types of mental practice: silent score reading and score reading while listening to the music. The study incorporates expert ratings of performances before and after mental practice, questionnaire data concerning modal preferences, as well as semi-structured interviews. The results revealed individual differences in learning outcomes, attitudes toward the two types of mental practice, and the use of imagery. The participants’ attitudes and strategies were variously affected by their ability to audiate newly encountered music, their possible preference for learning by ear, and their need to process the…
Does Replacing Face-to-face Lectures with Pre-recorded Video Lectures Affect Learning Outcomes?
2019
Videoing lectures have been popular during the past decade. The literature on the effect of video lectures is controversial. Some studies indicate that video lectures have a positive effect on learning outcomes and student satisfaction, while some state that there is no effect at all. In this paper, we share the results of a university undergraduate course, where half of the lectures were replaced by pre-recorded lectures. The results indicate that using pre-recorded lectures had a statistically significant positive effect on grades. Also, the students’ satisfaction levels were higher. peerReviewed
