Tunable Dual-Wavelength Thulium-Doped Fiber Laser Based on FBGs and a Hi-Bi FOLM

2017

A tunable dual-wavelength thulium doped fiber laser is demonstrated experimentally. For the first time for the 2- $\mu \text{m}$ wavelength band we propose the independent tuning of the generated laser lines based on fiber Bragg gratings and the use of a Hi-Bi fiber optic loop mirror for the fine adjustment of the cavity losses to obtain stable dual-wavelength operation. Dual-wavelength laser generation with the laser lines separation in the range from 0.3 to 6.5 nm is obtained. The laser emission exhibits an optical signal-to-noise ratio better than 56 dB. Improved stability with output power fluctuations less than 1 dB is observed in dual-wavelength generation with equal power of lines.

Multimode emission in inhomogeneously broadened ring lasers

2001

The threshold for multilongitudinal-mode emission in inhomogeneously broadened ring lasers is analytically investigated. In the homogeneous limit the multimode instability corresponds to the classical Risken–Nummedal–Graham–Haken instability. It is found that by increasing the inhomogeneous linewidth, the instability threshold is decreased and the growth of high-frequency side modes is favored. In the limit where the population-inversion decay rate γ‖ is much smaller than the polarization decay rate γ⊥ (class B lasers), analytical expressions for the instability threshold are found, which are then generalized to three-level lasers for a comparison with experimental results obtained with erb…

29SiH4 and 30SiH4: Dipole moment parameters of the dyad from Stark effect observations with laser sidebands

1990

Abstract The linear Stark effect within the ν 2 ν 4 dyad of 29SiH4 and 30SiH4 has been investigated by applying the infrared sideband technique at microwave modulation frequencies. Two vibration-induced dipole moment parameters have been measured for each isotopomer on natural abundance samples.

Injection-Locked Flashlamp-Pumped Dye Lasers Of Very Narrow Linewidth

1988

Very high spectral quality flashlamp-pumped dye lasers are described, in which spectral narrowing is achieved by injection-locking of pulsed amplifying cavities to the wavelength of low power single-mode cw lasers. With the help of a fast electronic stabilization of the cavity length, we obtain a reliable complete injection. Peak powers up to 12 kW in 300 ns at a bandwith of 6 MHz are achieved over a 150 nm tuning range between 572 and 722 nm. The repetition rate is 10 Hz, limited mainly by the circulating pumps. Applications of these lasers are found in high resolution coherent Raman spectroscopy and nonlinear difference frequency mixing.

"Smart" defects in colloidal photonic crystals

2005

AbstractWe present a bottom-up approach for the construction of "Smart" active defects in colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs). These structures incorporate polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) planar defects embedded in silica CPCs through a combination of evaporation induced self-assembly and microcontact transfer printing. We show how the enormous chemical diversity inherent to PEMs can be harnessed to create chemically active defect structures responsive to solvent vapor pressures, light, temperature as well as redox cycling. A sharp transmission state within the photonic stopband, induced by the PEM defect, can be precisely, reproducibly and in some cases reversibly tuned by these external s…

Long-cavity all-fiber ring laser actively mode locked with an in-fiber bandpass acousto-optic modulator.

2013

We demonstrate low-frequency active mode locking of an erbium-doped all-fiber ring laser. As the mode locker, we used a new in-fiber bandpass acousto-optic modulator showing 74% modulation depth, 3.7 dB power insertion losses, 4.5 nm of optical bandwidth, and 20 dB of nonresonant light suppression. The laser generates 330 ps mode-locked pulses over a 10 ns pedestal, at a 1.538 MHz frequency, with 130 mW of pump power. Fil: Cuadrado Laborde, Christian Ariel. Universidad de Valencia; España. Photoluminescence of Si nanocrystals embedded in SiO2: Excitation/emission mapping

2014

Time-resolved photoluminescence from Si nanocrystals produced by 1100∘C thermal annealing of SiOx/SiO2 multilayers were investigated by tunable laser excitation, achieving a detailed excitation/emission pattern in the visible and UV range. The emission lineshape is a gaussian curve inhomogenously broadened because of the size distribution of Si nanocrystals, the excitation spectrum consists of the overlap of two gaussian bands centered around 3.4 and 5.1 eV. The mapping of luminescence spectral components with the lifetime points out the energy cubic dependence of the spontaneous emission rate. These findings are interpreted on the basis of models proposed in literature that associate this …

Tunable diode laser measurements of hydrothermal/volcanic CO2 and implications for the global CO<sub&am…

2014

Abstract. Quantifying the CO2 flux sustained by low-temperature fumarolic fields in hydrothermal/volcanic environments has remained a challenge, to date. Here, we explored the potential of a commercial infrared tunable laser unit for quantifying such fumarolic volcanic/hydrothermal CO2 fluxes. Our field tests were conducted between April 2013 and March 2014 at Nea Kameni (Santorini, Greece), Hekla and Krýsuvík (Iceland) and Vulcano (Aeolian Islands, Italy). At these sites, the tunable laser was used to measure the path-integrated CO2 mixing ratios along cross sections of the fumaroles' atmospheric plumes. By using a tomographic post-processing routine, we then obtained, for each manifestati…

Observability of the Risken–Nummedal–Graham–Haken instability in Nd:YAG lasers

2003

Multilongitudinal mode instability in ring Nd:YAG lasers is theoretically analyzed. After we review the way in which the standard two-level laser theory applies to this laser we extend the theoretical treatment to include transverse effects. We do this by taking into account the finite transverse section of the active medium and by assuming a Gaussian transverse distribution for the intracavity field. Finally we demonstrate that multimode emission develops whenever the intracavity field waist diameter is almost equal to the active rod diameter. We conclude that continuous-wave diode-pumped Nd:YAG lasers with low cavity losses are good candidates for the observation of the Risken–Nummedal–Gr…

Application of sol-gel and laser evaporation methods to obtain thin gas sensitive films

2005

New type resistive/capacitative gas sensitive structures were obtained by using a specially prepared substrate- glass, covered by thin conducting In/sub 2/O/sub 3/ layer, cutted into a comb teeth-type electrodes by help of laser beam. Such laser processed gap in the layer of conducting material was a prototype of excellent humidity sensor, especially at high values of relative humidity (RH). Different additional coatings onto a laser processed gap were examined for humidity sensing. Sol-gel, vacuum thermal evaporation and laser evaporation methods were used to obtain a thin layers of different materials.
