Event-Triggered Nonlinear Control of OWC Ocean Wave Energy Plant

2018

This paper presents event-triggered nonlinear controllers for oscillating water column (OWC) ocean wave energy plant. The study is based on event-triggered backstepping controller (ET-BSC) and event-triggered sliding mode controller (ET-SMC) to control the rotational speed of an OWC turbine coupled to a generator. The designed controllers are capable to avoid the stalling of the Wells turbine so as to maximize its output power. The aim of event-triggered control is to minimize the control updates, thus providing efficient utilization of resources without compromising the OWC performance. In this regard, aperiodic sampling has been applied using an event-triggering rule derived from Lyapunov…

Gas-liquid mass transfer rates in unbaffled tanks stirred by PBT: scale-up effects and pumping direction

2018

Abstract Unbaffled stirred tanks are increasingly recognized as a viable alternative to common baffled tanks for a range of applications such as biochemical, food or pharmaceutical processes where the presence of baffles is undesirable for some reason. In this work, the mass transfer performance of unbaffled stirred tanks with pitched blade turbine, operating either in up-pumping or down-pumping mode, was investigated. The influence of impeller size and liquid viscosity were also investigated. The mass transfer intensity was measured by means of the Simplified Dynamic Pressure. Method The measurements concerned both coalescent and non-coalescent (viscous) batches. Results confirm that incre…

Numerical simulations of the dependency of flow pattern on impeller clearance in stirred vessels

2001

The flow and turbulence fields in a fully baffled vessel stirred by a Rushton turbine have been simulated by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The simulation techniques adopted (the "Sliding-grid" and "Inner-outer" methods) are fully predictive and require no experimental data as boundary or initial conditions. The effect of clearance (C) on the flow patterns in stirred vessels was simulated as the flow field transition observed can be considered a particularly stringent benchmark for the testing of CFD techniques. The results are compared with previously obtained LDA data and show that the double- to single-loop transition experimentally observed when impeller clearan…

Experiments and CFD Predictions of Solid Particle Distribution in a Vessel Agitated with Four Pitched Blade Turbines

2001

The distribution of solid particles in a high aspect-ratio baffled tank agitated with four 45° pitched blade turbines (PBT) was investigated using both experimental measurements and CFD simulations. Dilute suspensions of glass beads in water and moderately viscous liquids were considered. The measurement of axial particle concentration profiles was conducted by means of a light attenuation technique. Fully predictive simulations of solid-liquid suspensions were performed using a Sliding-Grid approach coupled with the Eulerian-Eulerian Two Fluid Model and the ‘homogeneous’ two-phase k-ɛ turbulence model. The simulated particle axial concentration profiles were compared with the experimental …

Simple equations for strength and deformability verification of tubular steel wind turbine towers

2021

Abstract Simple analytical expressions for a preliminary design of tubular steel wind turbine towers under flexure and shear are proposed. Expressions derived included local buckling effects, shear to moment interaction, ovalization of cross-section and inelastic rotation of foundation. A finite-element analysis with ABAQUS program was also conducted for examination of the ovalization effects and for the whole response of steel tube in flexure. Numerical and analytical results were compared with the experimental results of recent studies available in the literature, showing good agreement. The range of variable investigated refers to medium and large size steel wind tower with cylindrical s…

Structural Behavior of Telescopic Steel Pipe for a Full-Scale 60 kW Wind Turbine Tower

2020

A simple analytical model, including local effects due to buckling and shear to moment interaction, was developed to pre-dict the load-carrying capacity of CHS tubes under flexure and shear. A finite-element analysis with ABAQUS Code was also conducted for validation of the proposed model. By properly modeling the imperfection effects due to the ovalization of steel tube, a good correlation of the structural response and failure mode was also achieved, and a good correlation with the analytical model was also achieved. Numerical and analytical results were compared with experimental results recently obtained by the author with good agreement. Experimental tests refer to full-scale static te…

Stochastic Approach for Optimal Positioning of Pumps As Turbines (PATs)

2021

A generic water system consists of a series of works that allow the collection, conveyance, storage and finally the distribution of water in quantities and qualities such as to satisfy the needs of end users. In places characterized by high altitude differences between the intake works and inhabited centres, the potential energy of the water is very high. This energy is attributable to high pressures, which could compromise the functionality of the pipelines

Wavelet-Based Optimal Control of a Wind Turbine System: A Computational Approach

2011

This paper deals with a computational optimization approach to the problem of state-feedback control design for a wind turbine system. The first step of the study is to develop a reduced order model for the system by considering the most important physical phenomena of aerodynamics and structural dynamics. Moreover, the behavior of the system can be influenced by the coupled dynamics between the tower motions and the blade pitch and turbine speed which can cause instabilities in the control loops in the worst case. By using a suitable wavelet funcation, called Haar functions, a recursive computational procedure is established for finding the system dynamics approximately by solving only alg…

Robust model calibration using determinist and stochastic performance metrics

2016

International audience; The aeronautics industry has benefited from the use of numerical models to supplement or replace the costly design-build-test paradigm. These models are often calibrated using experimental data to obtain optimal fidelity-to-data but compensating effects between calibration parameters can complicate the model selection process due to the non-uniqueness of the solution. One way to reduce this ambiguity is to include a robustness requirement to the selection criteria. In this study, the info-gap decision theory is used to represent the lack of knowledge resulting from compensating effects and a robustness analysis is performed to investigate the impact of uncertainty on…

Performance study of a Helical Savonius hydrokinetic turbine with a new deflector system design

2019

Abstract The use of renewable energy sources has becoming a necessity to generate electricity. Helical Savonius rotors have been preferred for small-scale hydropower generation. Numerous studies were carried out to improve the performance of the Helical Savonius rotor which has not been fully explored. In this paper, an experimental study was carried out to evaluate the performance of a Helical Savonius water rotor in an irrigation channel. In order to enhance the performance of the studied water rotor, a new deflector system design was proposed. Different configurations of the proposed deflector system were tested numerically using the commercial software ANSYS FLUENT 17.0. Without a defle…
