The Foreign Body Response to an Implantable Therapeutic Reservoir in a Diabetic Rodent Model

2021

Advancements in type 1 diabetes mellitus treatments have vastly improved in recent years. The move toward a bioartificial pancreas and other fully implantable systems could help restore patient's glycemic control. However, the long-term success of implantable medical devices is often hindered by the foreign body response. Fibrous encapsulation "walls off" the implant to the surrounding tissue, impairing its functionality. In this study we aim to examine how streptozotocin-induced diabetes affects fibrous capsule formation and composition surrounding implantable drug delivery devices following subcutaneous implantation in a rodent model. After 2 weeks of implantation, the fibrous capsule sur…

An Analysis of “No Effect of Insulin Pen with Memory Function on Glycemic Control in a Patient Cohort with Poorly Controlled Type 1 Diabetes: A Rando…

2012

Missing meal bolus and nonadherence is an important barrier to achieving glycemic goals in type 1 diabetes (T1DM). In this issue of Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, Danne and coauthors reported the results of a 24-week randomized-controlled study designed to evaluate if using an insulin pen with memory function, the HumaPen® Memoir™, might improve injection compliance and, therefore, overall glycemic control in T1DM. Patients treated with the pen device with memory function improved, albeit nonsignificantly, their mean HbA1c by 0.43%. Among the reasons to justify why this study was not positive, the most important is the high proportion of adult patients included in the study (87…

Evaluation of an Algorithm for Retrospective Hypoglycemia Detection Using Professional Continuous Glucose Monitoring Data.

2014

Background: People with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are unable to produce insulin and thus rely on exogenous supply to lower their blood glucose. Studies have shown that intensive insulin therapy reduces the risk of late-diabetic complications by lowering average blood glucose. However, the therapy leads to increased incidence of hypoglycemia. Although inaccurate, professional continuous glucose monitoring (PCGM) can be used to identify hypoglycemic events, which can be useful for adjusting glucose-regulating factors. New pattern classification approaches based on identifying hypoglycemic events through retrospective analysis of PCGM data have shown promising results. The aim of this study was to…

Type 1 diabetes and polyglandular autoimmune syndrome: A review

2015

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disorder caused by inflammatory destruction of the pancreatic tissue. The etiopathogenesis and characteristics of the pathologic process of pancreatic destruction are well described. In addition, the putative susceptibility genes for T1D as a monoglandular disease and the relation to polyglandular autoimmune syndrome (PAS) have also been well explored. The incidence of T1D has steadily increased in most parts of the world, especially in industrialized nations. T1D is frequently associated with autoimmune endocrine and non-endocrine diseases and patients with T1D are at a higher risk for developing several glandular autoimmune diseases. Familial cluster…

1. tipa cukura diabēta pacientu aprūpes process

2022

Urinary bladder enlargement across nine rodent models of diabetes: correlations with glucose and insulin levels

2021

AbstractThe urinary bladder is markedly enlarged in the type 1 diabetes mellitus model of streptozotocin (STZ)-injected rats, but much less data exist for models of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Diabetic polyuria has been proposed to explain bladder enlargement. We have collected data on bladder weight and blood glucose from 16 studies representing 9 distinct rodent diabetes (7 T2DM) and obesity models; some included arms with diets and/or pharmacological treatments. Data were analyzed for bladder enlargement and for correlations between bladder weight on the one and glucose levels on the other hand. Our data confirm major bladder enlargements in STZ rats, minor if any enlargement in fructose-fed…

The Terminal Complement Complex (TCC) in the Plasma of Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Relationship with Albumin Excretion Rate

1991

Increased TCC levels were found to be present in the plasma of patients with type 1 diabetes associated with the presence of anti-heparan sulfate antibodies and increased urinary excretion of albumin. The authors suggest a role of terminal complement activation in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy.

Clinical profiles and quality of care of adults with type 1 diabetes according to their cardiovascular Risk: A Multicenter, Observational, retrospect…

2021

Abstract Aims The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) recently defined cardiovascular risk classes for subjects with diabetes. Aim of this study was to explore the distribution of subjects with type 1 diabetes (T1D) by cardiovascular risk groups according to the ESC classification and to describe the quality indicators of care. Methods The study is based on data extracted from electronic medical records of patients treated at the 258 Italian diabetes centers participating in the AMD (Associazione Medici Diabetologi) Annals initiative. Patients with T1D were stratified by cardiovascular risk. Measures of intermediate outcomes, intensity/appropriateness of pharmacological treatment, and over…
