"Mroczna otchłań". Archetypowa interpretacja opowiadania "Przemiana Juana Romero" Howarda P. Lovecrafta

2020

The setting of “The Transition of Juan Romero” – the short story by Howard Phillips Lovecraft, who was the originator of modern American horror fiction – is “the gold mine in the Cactus Range”. Drawing on the theories of Carl Gustav Jung, the author of the present interpretation amplifies the cultural dimensions of Lovecraft’s text, giving prominence to its origin from the ancient myths of the Aztecs, and using the so-called psychological alchemy to show the archetypal symbolism and structure of the story. Such a critical perspective, which takes into account different layers of the authorial intentionality and the reader’s response, reveals the complexity of the characters and situations, …

Eye-Movement Study of Mechanics Problem Solving Using Multimodal Options

2020

We used an eye-tracking method to investigate students’ approaches to solving a physics task using various representations. Eight upper-secondary school students from Finland took part in the study. We found that students who preferred either the text or graph representations watched the options differently, but they used both representations to be sure of their solution. Transitions between text and graph alternatives were different for students preferring either text or graph representations. Interviews revealed typical misconceptions about the concept of force. Implications for physics instruction are presented. peerReviewed

Botulinum Toxin A for Oral Cavity Cancer Patients: In Microsurgical Patients BTX Injections in Major Salivary Glands Temporarily Reduce Salivary Prod…

2012

Abstract: In patients suffering from oral cavity cancer surgical treatment is complex because it is necessary to remove carcinoma and lymph node metastasis (through a radical unilateral or bilateral neck dissection) and to reconstruct the affected area by means of free flaps. The saliva stagnation in the post-operative period is a risk factor with regard to local complications. Minor complications related to saliva stagnation (such as tissue maceration and wound dehiscence) could become major complications compromising the surgery or the reconstructive outcome. In fact the formation of oro-cutaneous fistula may cause infection, failure of the free flap, or the patient’s death with carotid b…

Pulsating B and Be stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud

2008

Context: Stellar pulsations in main-sequence B-type stars are driven by the kappa-mechanism due to the Fe-group opacity bump. The current models do not predict the presence of instability strips in the B spectral domain at very low metallicities. As the metallicity of the SMC is lower than Z=0.005, it constitutes a very suitable object to test these predictions. Aims: The main objective is to investigate the existence of B-type pulsators at low metallicities, searching for short-term periodic variability in absorption-line B and Be stars in the SMC. The analysis has been performed in a sample of 313 B and Be stars with fundamental astrophysical parameters accurately determined from high-res…

Quantitative Approximation Properties for the Fractional Heat Equation

2017

In this note we analyse \emph{quantitative} approximation properties of a certain class of \emph{nonlocal} equations: Viewing the fractional heat equation as a model problem, which involves both \emph{local} and \emph{nonlocal} pseudodifferential operators, we study quantitative approximation properties of solutions to it. First, relying on Runge type arguments, we give an alternative proof of certain \emph{qualitative} approximation results from \cite{DSV16}. Using propagation of smallness arguments, we then provide bounds on the \emph{cost} of approximate controllability and thus quantify the approximation properties of solutions to the fractional heat equation. Finally, we discuss genera…

Gradient and Lipschitz Estimates for Tug-of-War Type Games

2021

We define a random step size tug-of-war game and show that the gradient of a value function exists almost everywhere. We also prove that the gradients of value functions are uniformly bounded and converge weakly to the gradient of the corresponding $p$-harmonic function. Moreover, we establish an improved Lipschitz estimate when boundary values are close to a plane. Such estimates are known to play a key role in the higher regularity theory of partial differential equations. The proofs are based on cancellation and coupling methods as well as an improved version of the cylinder walk argument. peerReviewed

An evolutionary Haar-Rado type theorem

2021

AbstractIn this paper, we study variational solutions to parabolic equations of the type $$\partial _t u - \mathrm {div}_x (D_\xi f(Du)) + D_ug(x,u) = 0$$ ∂ t u - div x ( D ξ f ( D u ) ) + D u g ( x , u ) = 0 , where u attains time-independent boundary values $$u_0$$ u 0 on the parabolic boundary and f, g fulfill convexity assumptions. We establish a Haar-Rado type theorem: If the boundary values $$u_0$$ u 0 admit a modulus of continuity $$\omega $$ ω and the estimate $$|u(x,t)-u_0(\gamma )| \le \omega (|x-\gamma |)$$ | u ( x , t ) - u 0 ( γ ) | ≤ ω ( | x - γ | ) holds, then u admits the same modulus of continuity in the spatial variable.

Uniqueness of positive solutions to some Nonlinear Neumann Problems

2017

Using the moving plane method, we obtain a Liouville type theorem for nonnegative solutions of the Neumann problem ⎧ ⎨ ⎩ div (ya∇u(x, y)) = 0, x ∈ Rn,y > 0, lim y→0+yauy(x, y) = −f(u(x, 0)), x ∈ Rn, under general nonlinearity assumptions on the function f : R → R for any constant a ∈ (−1, 1). peerReviewed
