Why Untrained Control Groups Provide Invalid Baselines: A Reply to Dienes and Altmann
2003
Dienes and Altmann argue that an untrained control group provides a reliable baseline to measure artificial grammar learning. In this reply, we first provide a fictitious example to demonstrate that this assessment is faulty. We then analyse why this assessment is wrong, and we reiterate the solution proposed in Reber and Perruchet (this issue) for a proper control. Finally, we point out the importance of these methodological principles in the context of implicit learning studies. In their comment, Dienes and Altmann (this issue) raise two main concerns. First, they argue that any difference in classification between an experimental group and an untrained control group reflects the fact tha…
Panel Summary: Symbolism and Connectionism Paradigms
1999
The aim of this chapter is to report the panel discussion on symbolism and connectionism paradigms. In particular, the following hot point are analysed: what cognitive phenomena are most difficult for connectionists to explain? what cognitive phenomena are most naturally explained in connectionist terms? is symbolic deduction a central kind of human thinking? How do people make deductions? is nondeductive reasoning done in accord with the laws of probability? what areas of knowledge do you have that are easily described in terms of symbolic rules? concepts reduced to rules, concepts reduced to networks; symbolic and connectionist mechanisms of analogy; planning, decision, explanation, learn…
The Family-Resemblances Framework for Mind-Wandering Remains Well Clad
2018
Christoff et al. [1] reject our family-resemblances framework for mind-wandering research [2] and instead seek to characterize mind-wandering with a necessary defining feature. As an example, they point to their ‘dynamic framework’ [3] that defines mind-wandering as thoughts that ‘proceed in a relatively free, unconstrained fashion.’ We outline three primary points of disagreement with their commentary and two points of clarification on the family-resemblances framework.
Let’s do Process Research in Cognitive Psychotherapy
2002
As someone can easily deduct from the title of this paper I consider highly relevant process research for the field of cognitive therapy. The explanation is both personal and scientific, at the same time. From a personal point of view process resarch is more encouraging, funny and exciting than other type of researches. From a scientific point of view, process research could help to improve cognitive therapy, adding some light to the therapeutic cognitive change.
Local versus global processing of harmonic cadences in the solution of musical puzzles
1998
The structure of Western musical pieces is delineated by several kinds of cadence. Half cadences in the main key indicate temporary endings; authentic cadences in the main key indicate definitive endings. Authentic cadences in the dominant key are of cognitive interest, since they mark a definitive ending at a local level but a temporary ending at a global level. This study investigated the local versus global processing of these cadences. Participants were presented with sections of 16-bar minuets displayed on a computer screen in the form of a musical jigsaw puzzle. The sections consisted of either the first or the second half of the minuet (8 bars each). The first section ended with eith…
Collaborative Activities and Methods
2016
Having described the context for collaborative activities (in Chap. 1), and reviewed the basic aspects of computer supported decision-making activities (in Chap. 2), we will present in this section several specific methods used in collaborative decision making. The methods and techniques presented in the chapter are independent of the information technologies upon they are instantiated.
The Elephant in the Machine: Proposing a New Metric of Data Reliability and its Application to a Medical Case to Assess Classification Reliability
2020
In this paper, we present and discuss a novel reliability metric to quantify the extent a ground truth, generated in multi-rater settings, as a reliable basis for the training and validation of machine learning predictive models. To define this metric, three dimensions are taken into account: agreement (that is, how much a group of raters mutually agree on a single case)
Reputation or peer review? The role of outliers
2018
We present an agent-based model of paper publication and consumption that allows to study the effect of two different evaluation mechanisms, peer review and reputation, on the quality of the manuscripts accessed by a scientific community. The model was empirically calibrated on two data sets, mono- and multi-disciplinary. Our results point out that disciplinary settings differ in the rapidity with which they deal with extreme events—papers that have an extremely high quality, that we call outliers. In the mono-disciplinary case, reputation is better than traditional peer review to optimize the quality of papers read by researchers. In the multi-disciplinary case, if the quality landscape is…
Men's doubles professional tennis on hard courts: Game structure and point ending characteristics
2019
Despite the great tradition and importance of the doubles game in professional tennis, no literature has analysed to date the performance of professional players. Therefore, the information on the characteristics of the game, or the tactics related to how the points are won in doubles play is scarce. The objective of this study has been to describe the basic characteristics of the structure of the doubles game, and to establish how the points finish in doubles professional tennis played on hard courts. Thirty-four ATP doubles matches played in 2018 were analysed, which included a total of 40 professional players. As per the game structure, the results showed that, in comparison to the singl…
