Change is a constant ingredient of modern work life. Thus, job demands and the complexity of job tasks that workers are required to accomplish and perform in everyday work are increasing in organizations and firms. Increasing job demands and incessant changes may be stressful, at least for certain employees, and cause significant and long-lasting health effects as well. Most individuals spend a substantial portion of their total time at work. Thus, work-related behaviours have significant spillover effects on other aspects of life. For these reasons, work-related sickness is also a particularly important aspect of employee well-being from the broader economic perspective. peerReviewed

Being able to provide sufficiently good care for older people: care workers and their working conditions in Finland

This study examines whether care workers in Finland feel able to provide adequate care for older people and analyses the working conditions that limit them from providing it. One third of the respondents felt that they were not able to provide sufficient care for older people. This was seen as being due to excessive workloads, a general lack of staff and accompanying physical and mental burdens. Improving care workers’ working conditions would enhance their work–life balance and allow them to help older people avoid situations of care poverty, that is, to receive the level of care they deserve.

How do working careers anticipate the timing of retirement and the weight of care commitments related to other activities when retired? This question is discussed by analysing the experiences of Finnish working careers. Most of the interviewees indicated that helping parent(s) would be part of their own retirement, but after leaving full-time work they would also like to devote time for their other personal interests, too. Fathers in focus: two discursive analyses on addressing men, work and care

We introduce in this chapter discourse analysis as a methodological tool for studying work-family issues, particularly those of men and fathers in work and care. Work and family involve complex processes and dynamics, where reconciling different interpretations of events are temporally and contextually changing. Current discourses on involved fatherhood raise many questions about men's work and family relationships and the role of care in their life. Artikkelissa tutkin uusliberaalin postfeminismin kehyksen läpi työntekijyyden ja äitiyden ristiriitaisuuksia ja ratkaisuyrityksiä. Empiirisenä kohteena on äitiyrittäjyysilmiö. Siinä on kyse yrittäjyydestä, joka on rinnakkaista tai alisteista naisen äitiroolille. Objective: This article reports on the associations of fathers' leave take-up with parents' care responsibilities when their child is around four years old. Background: In families with small children women continue to do more parental care work than men.
