We describe the development of a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the determination of citrulline and other amino acids relevant to intestinal diseases. The amino acids were derivatized with 9-fluorenylmethylchloroformate (FMOC-Cl) and their derivatives were separated on two different columns, a core-shell column (Halo C18) and a silica-based monolith (Chromolith Performance RP-18). The derivatization reaction was optimized with respect to pH, buffer concentration and reproducibility. Alfa-hydroxy-isocaproic acid (HICA) is an end product of leucine metabolism in human tissues such as muscle and connective tissue. Clinical and experimental studies indicate that HICA may be considered as an anti-catabolic substance. Intensive exercise leads not only to anabolism but also to catabolism in the muscle. The latter is associated with breakdown of muscle proteins and delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). The fabrication of inorganic nanomaterials is important for a wide range of disciplines. While many purely inorganic synthetic routes have enabled a manifold of nanostructures under well-controlled conditions, organisms have the ability to synthesize structures under ambient conditions. For example, magnetotactic bacteria, can synthesize tiny ‘compass needles’ of magnetite (Fe3O4). Here, we demonstrate the bio-inspired synthesis of extended, self-supporting, nanometer-thin sheets of iron oxide at the water–air interface through self-assembly using small histidine-rich peptides.
Electrochemical Deoxygenation of Aromatic Amides and Sulfoxides

The electrochemical deoxygenation of a broad range of aromatic amides was achieved under mild conditions on lead cathodes. Under the optimized reaction conditions, acetal, thienyl, and ether moieties are tolerated. Furthermore, the reduction protocol can be applied to aromatic and aliphatic sulfoxides to obtain the corresponding sulfides. For both aromatic amides and sulfoxides, the deoxygenation reaction ensues without the use of expensive catalysts or hazardous reducing agents. Owing to the high selectivity of the process, simple extraction is sufficient to isolate the product from the substrate. Transferability of ASTM/NIST alanine–polyethylene recipe at ISS

Abstract Alanine–polyethylene solid state dosimeters were prepared at Istituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS) following the recipe proposed by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) with the goal of testing its transferability. Dosimeters were prepared using 95% alanine and 5% polyethylene, by weight. They are rugged and of increased sensitivity, repeatability and reproducibility as respect to the ISS alanine-paraffin pellets. Reproducibility of about 1% was obtained at 10 Gy and at 3 Gy if one single pellet or a stack of five dosimeters were used, respectively.

A new synthesis of 2-methyl-9-R'-10-R-5,6-dihydro-7H-pyrazolo[1,5-d][1,4]benzodiazepin-6-ones (4a-c) is deserved. Reaction of ethyl hydrazinoacetate hydrochloride with 1,3-diketones 1a-c gave both 3-methyl-5-(4R'-5-R-2-nitrophenyl)pyrazol-1-yl-acetate acids (2a-c) and the corresponding ethyl esters 3a-c. Reduction with the appropiate reducing agent of compounds 2a-c and 3a-c directly gave the title compounds. Compound 4a showed insecticidal properties against the house fly.

Natural disease-suppressive soils provide an untapped resource for the discovery of novel beneficial microorganisms and traits. For most suppressive soils, however, the consortia of microorganisms and mechanisms involved in pathogen control are unknown. To date, soil suppressiveness to Fusarium wilt disease has been ascribed to carbon and iron competition between pathogenic Fusarium oxysporum and resident non-pathogenic F. oxysporum and fluorescent pseudomonads.
