Assessment of the worldwide burden of critical illness: The Intensive Care Over Nations (ICON) audit

Postoperative non-invasive assessment of pulmonary vascular resistance using Doppler echocardiography.

Non-invasive monitoring of pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) in postoperative cardiac surgery patients might be useful, particularly for management of pulmonary hypertension. For this purpose, we sought to assess Doppler echocardiography in the intensive care setting. Onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathophysiology differs between brain regions. The neocortex, for example, is a brain region that is affected very early during AD. NMDA receptors (NMDARs) are involved in mediating amyloid beta (Aβ) toxicity. NMDAR expression, on the other hand, can be affected by Aβ. We tested whether the high vulnerability of neocortical neurons for Aβ-toxicity may result from specific NMDAR expression profiles or from a particular regulation of NMDAR expression by Aβ. Abstract Among Crioceris leaf-beetles, the two most widespread species (Crioceris asparagi and C. duodecimpunctata) are serious invasive plant pests, while another two (C. quatuordecimpunctata and C. quinquepunctata) are rare species restricted to steppe-like habitats in Eurasia. EBV-Induced Gene 3 Transcription Is Induced by TLR Signaling in Primary Dendritic Cells via NF-κB Activation

Abstract The EBV-induced gene 3 (EBI3) is expressed in dendritic cells (DCs) and part of the cytokine IL-27 that controls Th cell development. However, its regulated expression in DCs is poorly understood. In the present study we demonstrate that EBI3 is expressed in splenic CD8−, CD8+, and plasmacytoid DC subsets and is induced upon TLR signaling. Cloning and functional analysis of the EBI3 promoter using in vivo footprinting and mutagenesis showed that stimulation via TLR2, TLR4, and TLR9 transactivated the promoter in primary DCs via NF-κB and Ets binding sites at −90 and −73 bp upstream of the transcriptional start site, respectively. Protection from lethal septic peritonitis by neutralizing the biological function of interleukin 27

The immune response to bacterial infections must be tightly controlled to guarantee pathogen elimination while preventing tissue damage by uncontrolled inflammation. Here, we demonstrate a key role of interleukin (IL)-27 in regulating this critical balance. IL-27 was rapidly induced during murine experimental peritonitis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Furthermore, mice deficient for the EBI3 subunit of IL-27 were resistant to CLP-induced septic peritonitis as compared with wild-type controls, and this effect could be suppressed by injection of recombinant single-chain IL-27. Accelerating H.264 inter prediction in a GPU by using CUDA

H.264/AVC defines a very efficient algorithm for the inter prediction but it takes too much time. With the emergence of General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU), a new door has been opened to support this video algorithm into these small processing units. In this paper, a forward step is developed towards an implementation of the H.264/AVC inter prediction algorithm into a GPU using Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA). The results show a negligible rate distortion drop with a time reduction on average up to 93.6%.

Previously undiagnosed Reinke edema as a cause of immediate postextubation inspiratory stridor

Reinke edema (RE) is an uncommon lesion of the vocal folds and a potential cause of complications during airway management. We report the case of a woman with previously unknown RE admitted to the intensive care unit who experienced postextubation inspiratory stridor immediately after separation from mechanical ventilation. RE should be considered among causes of postextubation stridor.
