Cosmopolitan law and reason in Kant

2018

From Kant's cosmopolitan proposal, over and above its placing w it h in t he more specif ic space of doctrine of right, important elements emerge in connection with the project of a "critiue of reason", considered in all its architectural extension, and therefore, ultimately, in relation to what Kant really means by "human reason". And indeed - this is the hypothesis that guides the present work - precisely starting from what the treatment of cosmopolitan law reveals about the complexity of the concept of reason it becomes possible to understand in a theoretically informed way the meaning of the political-legal proposal that pervades Kant's late maturity. In order to verify this hypothesis,…

Politics of Humanitarianism: The Ahmadiyya and the Provision of Social Welfare

2020

Ahmadi Muslims have combined local contributions and financial support from overseas to support various development projects since the 1920s when they started their mission activities in West Africa. The chapter outlines contemporary social welfare activities of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Ghana and Burkina Faso. Humanitarian aid provided by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and its NGO Humanity First is one of the issues favouring public recognition as well as interreligious dialogue to which the Ahmadis are equally strongly committed. Most of the donations for Humanity First come from members of the Ahmadiyya community, as zakat or sadaqa donations. Public recognition is particularly i…

Reliability and effectiveness of Ellenberg’s indices in checking flora and vegetation changes induced by climatic variations

2001

Two methods are proposed to assess the significance of time-spanned local variations of Ellenberg’s indicator values in floristic and phytosociological data sets respectively. Both methods are based on frequencies and averages of the indicator values within and among data sets. Main goal of proposed methods is to determine the threshold above which the observed variations are to be considered significant. In order to relate the observed floristic variations to recent climatic changes, attention was focused on the Ellenberg’s indices dealing with the main climatic variables: heliophany, temperature and precipitation. Study-cases from Zannone Island (Pontine Archipelago, Mediterranean region)…

Multi-Temporal Soil Salinity Assessment at a Detailed Scale for Discriminating Halophytes Distribution

2016

A multi-temporal survey of soil salinity in a salt lake, recolonized by halophytes, was performed using electromagnetic induction (EMI) providing volume integrated values of soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa). Inventories of plant communities were recorded according to the Braun-Blanquet method. In each of six areas monospecific with Suaeda vermiculata, Suaeda vera, Sarcocornia fruticosa, or Arthrocnemun macrostachyum, ECa was measured intensively in two seasons. Mean and range of ECa differ for each plant community. Soil was sampled in the six areas and analyzed for ion composition of the soil saturated paste extract. The electrical conductivity of the saturated paste extract (ECe…

Impact of probiotics on risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. A review.

2014

International audience; Probiotic microorganisms have historically been used to rebalance disturbed intestinal microbiota and to diminish gastrointestinal disorders, such as diarrhea or inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis). Recent studies explore the potential for expanded uses of probiotics on medical disorders that increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, such as obesity, hypercholesterolemia, arterial hypertension, and metabolic disturbances such as hyperhomocysteinemia and oxidative stress. This review aims at summarizing the proposed molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in probiotic-host interactions and to identi…

Differential disease resistance response in the barley necrotic mutant nec1

2010

Abstract Background Although ion fluxes are considered to be an integral part of signal transduction during responses to pathogens, only a few ion channels are known to participate in the plant response to infection. CNGC4 is a disease resistance-related cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channel. Arabidopsis thaliana CNGC4 mutants hlm1 and dnd2 display an impaired hypersensitive response (HR), retarded growth, a constitutively active salicylic acid (SA)-mediated pathogenesis-related response and elevated resistance against bacterial pathogens. Barley CNGC4 shares 67% aa identity with AtCNGC4. The barley mutant nec1 comprising of a frame-shift mutation of CNGC4 displays a necrotic phenotype and co…

Role of glutathione in plant signaling under biotic stress

2012

International audience; Glutathione (GSH) is a non-protein thiol compound which has been repeatedly reported to play an important role in plant responses during biotic stresses. However, our knowledge of glutathione-related molecular mechanisms underlying plant defense responses still remains limited. We first discovered that the Arabidopsis thaliana phytoalexin deficient 2-1 (pad2-1) mutant was linked to glutathione deficiency since the mutation was identified in the GSH1 gene encoding the first enzyme of glutathione biosynthesis: Glutamate Cysteine Ligase (GCL). Interestingly, this glutathione-deficient mutant pad2-1 also displays a high susceptibility to a wide range of invaders. We rece…

Characterization of a new, nonpathogenic mutant of Botrytis cinerea with impaired plant colonization capacity.

2006

International audience; Botrytis cinerea is a necrotrophic pathogen that attacks more than 200 plant species. Here, the nonpathogenic mutant A336, obtained via insertional mutagenesis, was characterized.Mutant A336 was nonpathogenic on leaves and fruits, on intact and wounded tissue, while still able to penetrate the host plant. It grew normally in vitro on rich media but its conidiation pattern was altered. The mutant did not produce oxalic acid and exhibited a modified regulation of the production of some secreted proteins (acid protease 1 and endopolygalacturonase 1). Culture filtrates of the mutant triggered an important oxidative burst in grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ) suspension cells, a…
