Almost polynomial growth: Classifying varieties of graded algebras
2015
Let G be a finite group, V a variety of associative G-graded algebras and c (V), n = 1, 2, …, its sequence of graded codimensions. It was recently shown by Valenti that such a sequence is polynomially bounded if and only if V does not contain a finite list of G-graded algebras. The list consists of group algebras of groups of order a prime number, the infinite-dimensional Grassmann algebra and the algebra of 2 × 2 upper triangular matrices with suitable gradings. Such algebras generate the only varieties of G-graded algebras of almost polynomial growth, i.e., varieties of exponential growth such that any proper subvariety is polynomially bounded. In this paper we completely classify all sub…
Usable Interface Design for Everyone
2011

Sonority as a Phonological Cue in Early Perception of Written Syllables in French
2020
Many studies focused on the letter and sound co-occurrences to account for the well-documented syllable-based effects in French in visual (pseudo)word processing. Although these language-specific statistical properties are crucial, recent data suggest that studies that go all-in on phonological and orthographic regularities may be misguided in interpreting how—and why—readers locate syllable boundaries and segment clusters. Indeed, syllable-based effects could depend on more abstract, universal phonological constraints that rule and govern how letter and sound occur and co-occur, and readers could be sensitive to sonority—a universal phonological element—for processing (pseudo)words. Here, …

Albanese Maps and Fundamental Groups of Varieties With Many Rational Points Over Function Fields
2020
We investigate properties of the Albanese map and the fundamental group of a complex projective variety with many rational points over some function field, and prove that every linear quotient of the fundamental group of such a variety is virtually abelian, as well as that its Albanese map is surjective, has connected fibres, and has no multiple fibres in codimension one.
Duality, projectivity, and unification in Łukasiewicz logic and MV-algebras
2013
AbstractWe prove that the unification type of Łukasiewicz (infinite-valued propositional) logic and of its equivalent algebraic semantics, the variety of MV-algebras, is nullary. The proof rests upon Ghilardiʼs algebraic characterisation of unification types in terms of projective objects, recent progress by Cabrer and Mundici in the investigation of projective MV-algebras, the categorical duality between finitely presented MV-algebras and rational polyhedra, and, finally, a homotopy-theoretic argument that exploits lifts of continuous maps to the universal covering space of the circle. We discuss the background to such diverse tools. In particular, we offer a detailed proof of the duality …

Classifying G-graded algebras of exponent two
2019
Let F be a field of characteristic zero and let $$\mathcal{V}$$ be a variety of associative F-algebras graded by a finite abelian group G. If $$\mathcal{V}$$ satisfies an ordinary non-trivial identity, then the sequence $$c_n^G(\mathcal{V})$$ of G-codimensions is exponentially bounded. In [2, 3, 8], the authors captured such exponential growth by proving that the limit $$^G(\mathcal{V}) = {\rm{lim}}_{n \to \infty} \sqrt[n]{{c_n^G(\mathcal{V})}}$$ exists and it is an integer, called the G-exponent of $$\mathcal{V}$$ . The purpose of this paper is to characterize the varieties of G-graded algebras of exponent greater than 2. As a consequence, we find a characterization for the varieties with …
Generalized Riesz systems and quasi bases in Hilbert space
2019
The purpose of this article is twofold. First of all, the notion of $(D, E)$-quasi basis is introduced for a pair $(D, E)$ of dense subspaces of Hilbert spaces. This consists of two biorthogonal sequences $\{ \varphi_n \}$ and $\{ \psi_n \}$ such that $\sum_{n=0}^\infty \ip{x}{\varphi_n}\ip{\psi_n}{y}=\ip{x}{y}$ for all $x \in D$ and $y \in E$. Secondly, it is shown that if biorthogonal sequences $\{ \varphi_n \}$ and $\{ \psi_n \}$ form a $(D ,E)$-quasi basis, then they are generalized Riesz systems. The latter play an interesting role for the construction of non-self-adjoint Hamiltonians and other physically relevant operators.
