Environmental Barriers and Facilitators to Physical Activity among University Students with Physical Disability—A Qualitative Study in Spain
2021
This paper qualitatively examines environmental factors operating as barriers and/or facilitators to participation in physical activity (PA) of people with physical disabilities. Interview data were collected from 27 Spanish university students through the innovative method of two-on-one interviews. Thereafter, data were subject to a flexible thematic analysis. Three themes were constructed: associations
Teaching mechanical oscillations using an integrate curriculum
1997
Abstract A set of teaching materials dealing with harmonic oscillations was developed as part of a research project investigating the influence of different pedagogical tools on physics learning. The materials incorporate simulation software and laboratory activities associated with Teacher and Student Units. The project involved research groups at seven Italian universities and the materials have been trialled in high schools nation‐wide. This paper describes the experimental protocol for the use of these materials in pilot classes and the evaluation of student learning and teacher training results. The intervention was found to improve physics education at school praxis level and to promo…
Reformer i UH-sektoren. Det muliges kunst
2019
Public sector reform tends to harbour competing ambitions, problems and solutions. Reforms in higher education policy are no exception. They are often multi-faceted phenomena, partly because higher education institutions are complex organizations with wide-ranging expectations and demands from a variety of stakeholders. This chapter argues that higher education institutions cannot ‘organize away’ competing objectives, but rather aim to create organizational designs which help complex institutions to live with complex reforms. The chapter examines the ‘Structural Reform’ in Norwegian higher education and how higher education institutions responded. Launched in April 2015, it resulted in a la…
German Thoracic Research Scholarship 1996: lung volume reduction for endstage pulmonary emphysema at the Washington University of St. Louis.
1998
The Thoracic Research Scholarship 1996 of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery enabled me to visit Barnes Hospital at the Washington University of St. Louis, USA, from May to July 1996. At that center Prof. J. D. Cooper has established lung-volume reduction surgery as a successful surgical treatment for patients with endstage pulmonary emphysema. The operation is performed using left-sided double-lumen intubation. After opening of the chest and pleura and starting single-lung ventilation the less diseased parts of the second lung collapse due to absorption atelectasis whereas the more diseased portion of the lung stays hyperinflated. Linear staplers buttressed with bov…
Quality of life and fear of COVID-19 in 2600 baccalaureate nursing students at five universities : a cross-sectional study
2021
Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruptions in the implementation of programs across educational institutions. Nursing students, being both young adults and by practical training, part of the health care system, may be particularly vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to explore the associations between self-reported fear of COVID-19, general health, psychological distress and overall quality of life (QoL) in a sample of Norwegian baccalaureate nursing students compared to reference data. Methods The survey targeted baccalaureate nursing students from five universities in February 2021. An electronic questionnaire consisted …
Women in (neuro)science: report of a meeting held at the University of Valencia, Spain, in February 2018
2018
February 11th is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. To mark this day, research centers and universities were invited by the Spanish Neuroscience Association to organize a symposium. Twenty-five centers in Spain participated in the event, with the intent of giving visibility to the existing problem of the scarcity of women compared with men in (neuro)science in positions of responsibility and command. Fourteen neuroscientists, all staff members of the University of Valencia, arranged the meeting. The morning included lectures by women neuroscientists in different phases of their career: a PhD student, a junior and a senior postdoctoral investigator, and a well-established …
Microbial evaluation of Spanish potato omelette and cooked meat samples in University restaurants.
2000
The focus of this study was to evaluate the microbial quality of Spanish potato omelette and cooked meat samples including pork loin, chicken croquettes, long pork sausage, chicken breast, and meatballs from University restaurants. Microbiological analyses of Spanish potato omelette and cooked meat samples resulted in aerobic plate counts from1.00 to 2.90 and from1.00 to 6.04 log10 CFU g(-1), respectively. Total coliforms ranged from3 to 43 most probable number (MPN) g(-1) and from3 to2,400 MPN g(-1) for Spanish potato omelette and meat products, respectively. Escherichia coli, coagulase-positive staphylococci, and Lancefield group-D streptococci were detected in 1.7%, 3.5%, and 12.9% of Sp…
Assessment of the microbiological quality and wash treatments of lettuce served in University restaurants
2000
Abstract One hundred and forty-four samples of lettuce from 16 University restaurants were analyzed. The mesophilic aerobic counts of all samples ranged from 3.01 to 7.81 log 10 CFU g −1 . Results of total coliforms ranged from 3.38 log 10 most probable number (MPN) g −1 . Of the lettuce samples, 25.7% harbored Escherichia coli , 22.9% Staphylococcus aureus and 84% group D streptococci. Similarly, 10.4% of the samples harbored Aeromonas hydrophila , 2.8% Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and coliforms such as 14.6% Citrobacter freundii , 8.3% Klebsiella pneumoniae , 4.2% Enterobacter cloacae and 1.4% Providencia spp. Salmonella , Shigella and E. coli O157:H7 were not detected. When sodium hypochlori…
Prospettive dell’insegnamento dell’italiano nelle università cinesi nel contesto della riforma delle discipline umanistiche
2022
In 2018, the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China proposed the establishment of the Xin Wenke, the so-called ‘New Humanities Disciplines’, emphasizing interdisciplinary interaction, improvement of teaching, and integration between education and technology. Before the Xin Wenke reform, some Chinese universities had already practiced interdisciplinary integration, but these individual attempts still needed further improvement. In the context of the Xin Wenke reform and the Belt and Road Initiative, the importance of teaching Italian in China is becoming increasingly prominent. To achieve the goals of Xin Wenke reform and improve interdisciplinary integration, Chinese univer…
