Abstract Background and objective Deep learning approaches are common in image processing, but often rely on supervised learning, which requires a large volume of training images, usually accompanied by hand-crafted labels. As labelled data are often not available, it would be desirable to develop methods that allow such data to be compiled automatically. In this study, we used a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to generate realistic B-mode musculoskeletal ultrasound images, and tested the suitability of two automated labelling approaches. Methods We used a model including two GANs each trained to transfer an image from one domain to another. The two inputs were a set of 100 longitudina…
Automatic place detection and localization in autonomous robotics
2007
This paper presents an approach for the simultaneous learning and recognition of places applied to autonomous robotics. While noteworthy results have been achieved with respect to off-line training process for appearance-based navigation, novel issues arise when recognition and learning are simultaneous and unsupervised processes. The approach adopted here uses a Gaussian mixture model estimated by a novel incremental MML-EM to model the probability distribution of features extracted by image-preprocessing. A place detector decides which features belong to which place integrating odometric information and a hidden Markov model. Tests demonstrate that the proposed system performs as well as …
Implementation and Deployment Evaluation of the DMAMAC Protocol for Wireless Sensor Actuator Networks
2016
Abstract The increased application of wireless technologies including Wireless Sensor Actuator Networks (WSAN) in industry has given rise to a plethora of protocol designs. These designs target metrics ranging from energy efficiency to real-time constraints. Protocol design typically starts with a requirements specification, and continues with analytic and model-based simulation analysis. State-of- the-art network simulators provide extensive physical environment emulation, but still have limitations due to model abstractions. Deployment testing on actual hardware is therefore vital in order to validate implementability and usability in the real environment. The contribution of this article…
Evaluation of Ensemble Machine Learning Methods in Mobile Threat Detection
2017
The rapid growing trend of mobile devices continues to soar causing massive increase in cyber security threats. Most pervasive threats include ransom-ware, banking malware, premium SMS fraud. The solitary hackers use tailored techniques to avoid detection by the traditional antivirus. The emerging need is to detect these threats by any flow-based network solution. Therefore, we propose and evaluate a network based model which uses ensemble Machine Learning (ML) methods in order to identify the mobile threats, by analyzing the network flows of the malware communication. The ensemble ML methods not only protect over-fitting of the model but also cope with the issues related to the changing be…
Real-Time Power Flow Monitoring and Control System for Microgrids Integration in Islanded Scenarios
2019
This article presents an enhanced system for real-time power flow monitoring and control (PFMC) for microgrids integration in medium-voltage (MV) distribution networks. The developed solution includes both system architecture and the monitoring and control algorithms, and it has low implementation and installation costs. It is based on the use of hardware and software solutions previously proposed by the authors, i.e., a distributed measurement, a control and communication architecture, and a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software, which have been enhanced and integrated for the considered application. The SCADA implements a load flow (LF) algorithm for real-time power fl…
Supervisory Review of Key Functions
2015
Picking up from the Chap. 7 examination of the term “key functions” and of the key function holders, this chapter undertakes an examination of the supervisory review of key functions. In particular, this inquiry involves the areas of supervision of the key function holders as to fit-and-proper monitoring, the issue of remuneration of key function holders, the duties of notice and disclosure attendant on a change in key function holders, and the powers of insurance supervisory authorities in the supervision of key function holders.

The Concordato lateranense, as modified in 1984, no longer includes a provision on the recognition of the civil effects of dispensations super rato: and this is mainly due to political-ideological constraints which affect both the (bilateral) path of revision, and the concurrent intervention of the Constitutional Court (decision No. 18/1982) which endorses (while negotiations were still ongoing) the theory underpinning those constraints (the State’s ‘domination’ over the regulation of the marital relationship), while examining the super rato procedure in a formalistic way and stating that judicial protection is not sufficiently guaranteed. Firstly, the present paper deals with the origin, t…
The Observation of Formation and Annihilation of Solitons and Standing Strain Wave Superstructures in a Two-Dimensional Colloidal Crystal
2008
Confining a colloidal crystal within a long narrow channel produced by two parallel walls can be used to impose a meso-scale superstructure of a predominantly mechanical elastic character [Chui et al., EPL 2008, 83, 58004]. When the crystal is compressed in the direction perpendicular to the walls, we obtain a structural transition when the number of rows of particles parallel to the walls decreases by one. All the particles of this vanishing row are distributed throughout the crystal. If the confining walls are structured (say with a corrugation along the length of the walls), then these extra particles are distributed neither uniformly nor randomly; rather, defect structures are created a…
Exploring the behavior of vanadium under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions
2019
We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the melting curve and the structural behavior of vanadium under extreme pressure and temperature. We performed powder x-ray diffraction experiments up to 120 GPa and 4000 K, determining the phase boundary of the bcc-to-rhombohedral transition and melting temperatures at different pressures. Melting temperatures have also been established from the observation of temperature plateaus during laser heating, and the results from the density-functional theory calculations. Results obtained from our experiments and calculations are fully consistent and lead to an accurate determination of the melting curve of vanadium. These results are di…
On the theory of domain switching kinetics in ferroelectric thin films
2010
We investigate theoretically the polarization switching kinetics in ferroelectric thin films. In such substances, the domain walls are pinned by (usually dipole) defects, which are present also in ordered samples as technologically unavoidable impurities. This random interaction with dipole pinning centers results, in particular, in exponentially broad distribution of switching times. Under supposition of low pinning centers concentration, we derive the distribution function of switching times showing that it is not simply Lorentzian (as it was first suggested by Tagantsev et al [\prb, {\bf 66}, 214109 (2002)] ), but is a "square of Lorentzian", which is due to the vector nature of electric…
